Sunday opening hours

Ok so I can't remember the last time I shopped on a Sunday. I need to shop
Today and loads of places don't open the tills until 11am. Seems so outdated. Surely there are staff that want to work a Sunday.

Maybe I'm completely wrong on this as I say I very very rarely need to shop on Sundays but surely many want to or need to.

I know it's the law. I just think it feels a bit outdated

It's not the law here in Scotland though our shops open as normal. I agree with you it's odd and outdated

Think yourself lucky. I'm Northern Ireland they don't open to 1pm on a Sunday. Pain in the bum. Also loads of tourists bewildered in the city centre looking for an open shop!!

Complete pain in the arse. We work Monday-Friday and have kids activities etc on Saturday. Sunday morning would often be a great time for a supermarket shop in our house but not a chance.

Ridiculously old fashioned in this day and age when people are so busy.

PuttingDownRoots · 30/10/2023 06:55

Its just shops though. One sector.
Nobody seems to think the Amazon warehouse staff need more time with their families... or the staff at the local tip... or call centre staff...
Why not protect their Sundays as well?

(Not including emergency service staff in this or other emergency things like a plumber...)

Mangotango39 · 30/10/2023 09:26

Meh is what it is.
it's always been this way.

where I live it's 9-5PM Saturdays too. No supermarkets open any later than that!

Yes, I always think this. People in this thread have referenced going to cinema on a Sunday while thinking shops should remain closed. Cafes, restaurants, theme parks, local attractions, swimming pools, sports matches aren’t essential either, and I can’t see why the people who work in those industry are less deserving of a family day than those working in retail.

heyomayo · 30/10/2023 09:51

It’s a pain. There would also be more jobs if supermarkets could open longer on Sundays. Wouldn’t harm their profits

PrintersCourt · 30/10/2023 10:09

I'd honestly prefer all or nothing - closed completely or open normal times. It's a massive pain having to rush to the supermarket because it shuts at 4 - yes I know I could go earlier but for various reasons it would be easier to shop later. Or just know it wasn't open and do it all on a different day. The Sunday trading hours dont seem to benefit anyone and feel very outdated in the 21st century.

I dont agree retail staff should be forced to work Sundays but that's a whole different argument about the nature of retail work these days.

How would it? I only need one food shop a week - a supermarket opening more hours wouldn’t make me shop again. Same for clothes etc. I have things I need and a certain amount of disposable income to spend. I don’t suddenly have more because shops open another few hours. It would reduce profit, surely, as the income would stay the same but outgoings would increase for shops.

It may reduce online shopping if people had more options/flexibility for shopping on a Sunday, i.e. people who work Mon to Sat would have more choices to shop on Sunday, so would be less inclined to default to Amazon or other online retailers.

Can you explain your maths on that ?

As @cardibach explains on P2, I am still only going to do my supermarket shop once, spending a similar amount each week, but the shops will have further expenses in terms of utilities and staff.

I do.

I don't think people should have to work on Sundays unless they are carers, emergency services (in the widest sense - so including people who deal with burst water mains or electricity blackouts), or hospitality, leisure, and media (though I mean more behind the scenes - you can use a lot of recorded programmes). Even with hospitality, I'd like to see it limited.

No it hasn't. Shops, and all businesses used to be closed on Sundays.

So, just to confirm, you don't want pubs, restaurants, theme parks, tourist attractions, buses nor trains, operating on Sundays??

So basically, we can all stay at home, or go for walks, because nothing else will be open!

It's not as if more jobs is a positive thing in itself anyway. We don't have enough workers for the vacancies we have, and supermarket shift work is by its nature inflexible. Has to be done in person and at set times. Not the sort of role people tend to be biting employers arms off to get, even before factoring in that Sunday childcare and transport logistics will both take out some of the potential candidates.

aswarmofmidges · 30/10/2023 12:43

Well yes I think things being shut on Sunday where all you can do is stuff like walks wouldnt be a bad thing

The average person hasn't benefitted financially from Sunday openings , there may be more poorly paid jobs but also increased costs

The average person isn't any happier either as far as I can tell

A day a week of enforced rest and recouperation , a day a week where there is no pressure to do or get more

Look at the endless threads about how worn out and stressed people are , so much to do , so much to fit in and yet it rarely makes people happy and fulfilled .

Perhaps if we all did less that was feeding the economic machine and more feeding ourselves , growing ourselves without aid of things we can buy or have laid on for us , then we might feel better

And look at the endless threads about keto and eating more naturally - it's also natural to have breaks each week and less work in winter

kitsuneghost · 30/10/2023 12:48

How about internet free Sundays too
That way online staff can get a break too

perhaps we should ban driving and going out too
This would lessen the load on A and E nurses too.

Not to mention petrol station staff. Maybe trains and buses shouldn't run either.

It always makes me laugh when people say retail staff shouldn't work Sundays but you never see them advocating for Monday to Saturday holidays, with no leisure businesses or hospitality accommodation open on Sunday.

It only ever seems to be supermarket and shop staff who should get an enforced day off.
