Seatbelts aren't supposed to touch your neck and other stories

I've just found out seatbelts aren't supposed to touch your neck. I'm quite short and they always have. Apparently they were designed with a taller man in mind. Even though mine moves down slightly its still not low enough.

It got me wondering what else is designed for men that I've never noticed. Maybe number of toilets (I always feel that there should be more womens toilets in a venue than mens).

Read invisible women

BattleofBeamfleot · 26/10/2023 16:31

What @shockwaze said.

It will answer your question and simultaneously enrage you when you read the data proving that the entire world is built and designed for men.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/10/2023 16:37

'Unisex' clothing. Every single item is man shaped. Because men wouldn't wear woman shaped clothing, because it doesn't fit, yet somehow it's fine the other way around.

Many things with handles (I'm thinking of our lawnmower) is difficult to operate with smaller hands, which disproportionately affects women.

CaptainBarnaclesandthevegemals · 26/10/2023 16:40

The only exceptions to this are baby related gadgets. Prams with non adjustable handles are made for the height of an average woman, not man for once. Yes, it’s just more shit sexism but it was nice buying something clearly made to fit me for once.

marshmallowfinder · 26/10/2023 16:45

Toilets in cubicles with no room on one side for sanitary bin. Mirrors in public toilets TOO FUCKING HIGH to see anything apart from the top of my head, as they were positioned by a man.🙄

Justleaveitblankthen · 26/10/2023 16:53

I have to stand on tiptoe to see my face in the bathroom cabinet mirror.
To be fair, all the males in my family have to crouch significantly 😂

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/10/2023 16:54

I’m tall. Seatbelts still touch my neck. Drives me mad.

Same here. Because boobs.

Seatbelts were designed by men for average men, with nary a thought of women as drivers or passengers.

madeinmanc · 26/10/2023 17:12

Medicine dosages are calculated for men, I believe, and also this recommendation of 2000 calories for "adults" per day. Which adults? 🤔

ALongHardWinter · 26/10/2023 17:14

I've been in loads of cars where the seat belt has touched my neck! I'm not exceptionally short either,5 ft 5 in.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 26/10/2023 17:20

Invisible Women is a great read. Agree that it's completely enraging.

Crash test dummies/ airbags/size of iPhones ( and most tech)/medicines/ teaching about care for things like heart attacks and so on - all based on the average man.

Women die completely unnecessarily as a result of lazy design that won't be changed, we just have to suck it up.

Ditto!

I was in a car accident this year and ended up with a giant welt on my neck and across my chest, where the seatbelt was. Didn't happen to the men in the car, because no boobs so the seatbelt was properly positioned!

Babysharkdoodoodood · 26/10/2023 17:26

My dad actually designed and patented a new type of public toilet that was in a helix shape. It meant that there were 3 times more ladies loos than men's. It took up the same footprint as a normal public loo due to the design.

No one wanted it though. He tried with theme parks, councils etc but they all said there was no demand! Despite the fact that there are queues in every woman's toilet every single day.

Oh God, yes, petrol pumps was the other one I was thinking about!

Medical PPE.

Pythonesque · 26/10/2023 18:03

Ladies toilets done to high standards in places people visit - but with basins and nowhere to put a bag down while you wash your hands let alone do anything like adjust your hair or makeup.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/10/2023 18:06

I have a callous on my neck from my seatbelt. I paid the same amount for my car that a man would have paid but it doesn’t fit me properly.

VisaWoes · 26/10/2023 18:07

Lecterns in university lecture theatres.

I have my own clicker so I can come out from behind the lectern and walk about and be seen but if I hadn’t bought this the students wouldn’t be able to see me as my screen obscures me. Even pushed down as low as it goes.

Supermarkets and local shops only sell medium-sized (i.e. lady size) rubber gloves for washing up and cleaning. I have quite large hands and it's difficult for me to get them on and off. My partner (a man) has to do the washing up with bare hands because he can't get the gloves on at all.

MooseBreath · 26/10/2023 18:10

Pickle jars. My hand is too small to get a comfortable grip on the lid.

Kitchen cupboards. The top shelves are all unusable unless I have a footstool.

MrsCarson · 26/10/2023 18:10

I had a car once that you could adjust the height of the seat belt to lower it away from my neck I can't remember if it was a Ford or Chevrolet we had both at the same time Every time I buckle myself into my Hyundai I miss that adjustable one.
I find pram handles are too high but I'm short. Costco has the tallest trolleys, I hate how high the handle is, I remember having a baby in the seat and not able to see at all!
Edited to add it was a Ford Taurus with adjustable height seatbelt, I bloody loved it.

Where I work, the sensor that sets off the toilet flush is behind the toilet to the left. It's almost impossible to sit down on the toilet without setting it off. If you do manage to, and you reach for the toilet paper you set it off and splash your own nether regions with toilet water, pee and anything else you just passed.

I can only imagine it was installed by a man, because a man standing up to pee would not set it off at all.

StoatofDisarray · 26/10/2023 18:13

I've never used a seatbelt that didn't throttle me.
