Seatbelts aren't supposed to touch your neck and other stories

I've just found out seatbelts aren't supposed to touch your neck. I'm quite short and they always have. Apparently they were designed with a taller man in mind. Even though mine moves down slightly its still not low enough.

It got me wondering what else is designed for men that I've never noticed. Maybe number of toilets (I always feel that there should be more womens toilets in a venue than mens).

Ppe, my dd has had to have most of her kit special ordered and her respirator doesn't fit properly still, they are working on a solution. But when it came to rucksacks, no military issued ones fitted her or many of the females (20% of class) they have put in a complaint though 3 years on nothing has changed

gotomomo · 26/10/2023 22:12

My car however is fine, first car ever (dps is terrible though)

My dad actually designed and patented a new type of public toilet that was in a helix shape. It meant that there were 3 times more ladies loos than men's. It took up the same footprint as a normal public loo due to the design.

No one wanted it though. He tried with theme parks, councils etc but they all said there was no demand! Despite the fact that there are queues in every woman's toilet every single day.

Has he managed to prove it would save them money? When he does that they’ll want it. Bonus points if he can prove it will make them look sexist if people find out they didn’t buy them.

how long does it take 50 women to use the loo compared to 50 males for example? In a nightclub all the queueing for the toilets takes away valuable drink buying time.

We need to start a revolution. I want helix shaped loos and I don’t even know what helix means! If it stops me having to bloody queue for ages needing to pee while I watch my male counterparts swanning in and out I’ll bloody fight for that! (especially as we’re usually the ones having to take kids to the loos too!)

ugh irritated now.

Toilets in cubicles with no room on one side for sanitary bin. Mirrors in public toilets TOO FUCKING HIGH to see anything apart from the top of my head, as they were positioned by a man.🙄

I have a friend who's male builders/architect did this with her letterbox windows!!!

She's actually quite tall... For a woman. Still can't see out her windows though!

ActDottie · 26/10/2023 22:29

Air con in offices is apparently set for the average man. I find my office freezing!!!

Someoneonlyyouknow · 26/10/2023 22:32

Barbecues always have huge control knobs, lots larger than those on domestic cookers. Obviously men do all barbecue cooking and not much indoors

Anothernewname123 · 26/10/2023 22:36

I realised one of these only today!
Supermarket self check outs that have the 'pack' section above/behind the 'put your basket/shopping here to be processed' bit.
My arms aren't long enough to lean over and pack the shopping into a bag easily.

MumApril1990 · 26/10/2023 22:44

Gosh mine always touch my neck how frustrating, I had terrible whiplash from a minor crash once my neck was sore for weeks

JustAMinutePleass · 26/10/2023 22:47

Petrol nozzles are extremely difficult to hold if you have small hands. Vans and Converse and Crocs are too big as they are designed for men’s feet.

nocoolnamesleft · 26/10/2023 23:10

A friend of mine is an ITU consultant, and military medic. When she was deployed to Afghanistan, there was no stock of sterile surgical gloves in the size she needed, but loads of large and extra large ones. She had her friends in UK hospitals sending out gloves of the right size in shoeboxes via forces mail, because those got to her faster than trying to get the UK military to recognise that women have smaller hands than men. So even when the lives and limbs of men depend upon it, state institutions forget about providing the kit for women to be able to work effectively.

thats the thing, sometimes its a lot quicker to source your own equipment and supplies rather than through Hq

Those trolleys that you can put a baby seat on, I can’t see a bloody thing over the top. Such an absolutely rubbish design, surely having the baby seat lower in the trolley would mean people could see…

Defiantlynot41 · 27/10/2023 00:05

Shower cubicles designed by people (men) who have clearly never had to clean one. All the fiddly bits on the inside which get encrusted with soap gunk

Babysharkdoodoodood · 27/10/2023 00:12

@GrumpyPanda

He tried to market it to both Disney and Universal. Didn't even respond.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 27/10/2023 00:20

@Alopeciabop
Nt quite a helix. Picture's a bit crappy.

The ladies are all round the outside and men's inside the centre.

He just got pissed off waiting for us; DM and 3 daughters, when queueing for the loo.

Another thing I find is the ticket machines at the entrance and exit to barriered car parks. They are set just slightly to far for my arm length. Even if I drive up right to the kerb.

Pretty sure they are designed for the average man arm length

There should be a range of counter height/ pram or lawnmower handle heights that are not specialist.

Lawnmower handle heights are adjustable and have been for decades.

The lavatories in John Lewis' ladies' loos (in Liverpool, haven't tried them all) are rather high. When I sit on one my feet dangle above the floor like a little girl. I've no idea why as other loos are not so high, including the ones in our house.

Our fridge freezer is tall but the shelves are glass. I write the dates that tubs were opened on the bottom of the tub, so I can see it from below without having to get it out.

Now that's interesting as we have just stayed in a place very close to John Lewis in Liverpool and it's loo was higher than I have ever used elsewhere. I couldn't sit on it and touch the floor. Wonder if they used the same bathroom fitters.

Also I'm short, and my brother constantly criticises that my car seat position is too close to the steering wheel, and in the event of an accident setting off my air bag I am likely to have injury caused by the air bag. He has no answer when I point out I have to sit close as my feet wouldn't otherwise touch the pedals and my arms wouldn't reach the steering wheel.

Having said that, Dh is very tall, and even with the car seat in my car as far away as it goes, it still causes him leg pain as it's still too close for him. He has bought a new car which now goes back further but it's only recently he found them. He also as a teenager struggled to get shoes big enough to fit his size 12 feet and often had to wear size 11 as the stores in the city never had bigger.

ButWhatIsIt · 27/10/2023 01:21

I bought an adjustable seatbelt slider because I was fed up of the seatbelt being round my neck.
It's fabulous.
You can buy them on Amazon.

I have to stand on tiptoe to see my face in the bathroom cabinet mirror.
To be fair, all the males in my family have to crouch significantly 😂

Solved this problem by putting in an ENORMOUS oblong mirror when the bathroom was redone. Now 6'4" DH & little me can both see ourselves.

321user123 · 27/10/2023 01:48

I’m what you’d call average tall for a woman (nothing exceptional) but seat belts have always and still constantly cut my neck… because BOOBS. 😒😒😒

I drive a lot and in the last few months I started panicking that in an accident as the driver I may not make it because the bloody seat belt fits me wrong 😔

Ihateslugs · 27/10/2023 02:11

I have something similar but it is fabric and pulls the top strap down towards my stomach, away from my neck. My old car had an adjustment so I could fix the shoulder strap lower but my new car does not. Mine is an adult version of a children’s adjuster for car seats, very comfortable and easy to use.

They were mad to turn this down. Of course we need more toilets. Especially as men identifying as women are also using them in some places. The queues are so annoying, especially at sporting events, plays or anywhere time matters.

Gettingbysomehow · 27/10/2023 06:54

I have a very tiny car because I need to park in small spaces. It really isn't big enough for a man to drive yet the seat belts are still round my neck and I 'm 5 foot 5 so hardly short. It's infuriating.
