If your visiting a different country -

Are you a culture type person of a country and seeing how other country's work ie visiting supermarkets, local cafes, shops, markets ect

Or

Do you prefer to see the history of a place and what attracts tourists there what it is known for ect

What do you do all day if you're living like a local?! I can understand wanting to eat at local places but there's only three meals a day and once you've been to the market once why would you go again?

I live in a popular tourist destination and always take my friends and family round the tourist sites when they come and visit. It would be weird to come here and not do that. You'd probably end up sitting around in your room a lot.

I love cramming holiday itineraries full of things though so I'm probably biased. I don't see the point of going on holiday to sit around, we can do enough of that at home. My parents are often in the "live like a local" camp and, whilst relaxing, it's quite dull tbh.

@Ozgirl75

In all my years in Italy I have never seen anyone flout the rules in churches. But, tbf there is usually someone lurking around to remind visitors to cover their shoulders and usually someone selling headscarves outside. I've got quite a collection!

MyBlueDiary · 26/10/2023 16:50

Both. But if I have to choose between visiting the Uffizi and understanding how Italian supermarket checkouts work, Uffizi.

Nemareus · 26/10/2023 16:52

Both

Both.

The opposite is C... those who don't leave the hotel/tour bubble (AI type holidays)

Agree with this ^

Cruiser24 · 26/10/2023 17:03

Oh I meant to put if your or a cruise and only had 1 day in each country

OP posts:
gotomomo · 26/10/2023 17:06

Both, even if I only have one day, though what you choose to do is dependant on location

PuttingDownRoots · 26/10/2023 17:07

With one day it would be sights, with maybe a local cafe for lunch.

We have lived abroad and supermarkets, cafes etc aren't that different really.

Crinkle77 · 26/10/2023 17:07

Visiting supermarkets, shops and markets doesn't sound cultural to me. Cultural to me is option B.

Dragonsandcats · 26/10/2023 17:09

If on cruise and staying for one day, B for sights and A for a restaurant/cafe

endlessfall · 26/10/2023 17:09

These things usually go together and aren't either/or.
I live a supermarket but would focus on cultural icons first, then local markets and the supermarkets etc.

Yes when we were there, there was a man selling quite nice looking scarves and looked quite disappointed that we had all followed the rules and didn’t need covering up!

Ozgirl75 · 26/10/2023 17:13

We basically always self cater and although I kind of enjoy a supermarket trip, they all sell basically the same stuff in most places these days (well certainly in Western countries). I used to like finding new biscuits or whatever but it’s rare to find something totally new these days.

I quite like a market but that’s not very “local” to me - I never go to markets at home! Living like a local would be up at 6.30, work, quick lunch, more work and maybe out for dinner. I guess I want to live like a “independently wealthy semi retired local”

ALongHardWinter · 26/10/2023 17:18

A bit of both.

bonzaitree · 26/10/2023 17:32

Im neither A nor B I am C- sit on sun lounger with a cocktail and a book and ignore all « culture ».

Me too!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 26/10/2023 18:21

I love art and history so I make a beeline for the things I want to see in real life and might not get a chance to easily see again.

I don't mind a quick mooch round a supermarket or the shops but the days of finding a really unique place that sells something you can't find in two minutes on Google have long gone - ditto a lot of food and drink ( especially as I live in London with all the variety available here).

I'm happy to have a beer in a square somewhere and watch the world go by, but it's not the main reason I go on holidays. I can do that at home.

ginasevern · 26/10/2023 18:23

@Ozgirl75

Lol. You're right, the headscarves the vendors sell are usually really lovely and usually a bit different.

exexpat · 26/10/2023 19:57

If you are on a cruise, there is probably not much point in spending all your time going to markets and supermarkets, as you can't buy stuff to take back and cook, though having said that we did pop into a supermarket in St Petersburg to buy some local vodka and chocolate.

Even with limited time on shore, you can probably do a mixture of A and B. Won't it depend really on what main attractions/sights you can get to in the limited time, and whether they particularly appeal to you?

HeddaGarbled · 26/10/2023 20:03

pop into the Vatican 😀

Hotchocolatemousse · 26/10/2023 20:16

@Ozgirl75 it's warm here, in the low 20s but wearing a long cotton dress or trousers wouldn't overheat anyone. All the guidebooks emphasise wearing modest clothing for visiting seligious sites. So it's not as if people don't know what the rules are. It's just arrogant behaviour really particularly the filming of worshippers whilst at private prayer.

I loved this. Someone hasn't been since about 1985! ( to be fair, it's not like the Vatican has a fast turn around on its exhibits!)

I think it was 2015 or sometime about then! Pro tip, you beat the queue by pre-ordering the breakfast package. If you know, you know

Ps just checked and they still do it, Google "breakfast at the vatican". The main draw is you skip all the queues

Ylvamoon · 26/10/2023 20:30

Both, with C being AI holidays and D the type where you are ferried around in a bus or boat with a tight schedule and not a moments peace!
