Winner of the most random thread of the week!

I don't use it in writing but I do use it verbally. I had never done so before the first lockdown. Struggling to break the habit now, FFS.

Check out the Meanypegs thread.

I've read that thread when it started but don't get the reference?

Shade17 · 26/10/2023 13:53

It’s great to use where “cunt” is a bit too strong.

It's performance swearing, OP. And on here often feels forced and self-conscious.
Lucindas trying hard to be edgy.

When I see the f word on here I think of girls/women from the middle classes with perfect diction who are unable to invest the word with the necessary intimidation/contempt/scorn/shock/awe because they will pronounce the.-ing perfectly. @RenoDakota you are so right about self consciousness in using the word -.this prevents them from swearing, for example, like a Glaswegian ,with menace, with humour, with friendly casualness, with justified irritation...

CovetedAsFuck · 26/10/2023 13:12

it is horrible to hear it casually thrown about so much now

no it isn’t

It is though. It's an ugly word, to be used sparingly and it's effective when it is. Chucking it around in casual conversation just makes me lose any kind of respect for the speaker who clearly have very limited vocabulary

Rogue1001MNer · 26/10/2023 14:33

Fucks me off when people censor themselves on here

Eg sh!t

Absolutely boils my p*ss

It's no uglier than the similar sounding "chuck" or "truck"; less so, if anything.
And come on: the "limited vocabulary" thing is what your yr7 teacher told you. It's not true though, is it? The most intelligent and eloquent people I know often swear like troopers.

coxesorangepippin · 26/10/2023 14:33

Flabbergasted

DrFoxtrot · 26/10/2023 14:35

You could use 'crab cakes' instead, OP 😇

I like advising people they're a cunt! 🤣🤣

BogRollBOGOF · 26/10/2023 14:47

I don't have to use the word fuck on the internet, but it scores nicely when playing clickword.

I stuck around on MN as it was nice not to have twee "f*" censorship when it's abundantly clear what the word is anyway.

If anything, MN is less fucky and cunty than it was a decade ago.

People will probably not a give a fuck that you've lost respect for them.

Febrile?

Fucked if I know what word you mean 🤷‍♀️

It's not about having a limited vocabulary at all, let alone 'clearly'.

In any case, if your respect for someone is in any way linked to how extensive you imagine their vocabulary to be, you have skewed values.

Stephen Fry, Language Enthusiast, Defends The "Unnecessary" Art Of Swearing | Open Culture

'Mad, silly, prissy people used to say swearing was a sign of a poor vocabulary. It's such utter nonsense. The people I know who swear the most tend to have the widest vocabularies'

The available evidence contradicts your assertion that people who swear frequently are burdened by a paucity of vocabulary. There is a strong correlation between higher intelligence and use of profanity, and swearing has also been shown to have benefits in pain management. Nothing is ever set in stone, but on balance of probability, it us likely that you are wrong.

I swear like a trooper, and I can do it fluently in four languages. So muck for lack of vocabulary!
