Please can we talk about gussets in women's underwear?

Wise ones of MN, please help.
I'm trying to find information about underwear structure but Google is leading me to some very, ahem, unique corners of the internet.

Basically, I've taken to wearing men's boxer shorts because I find them so much more comfortable than women's.
Men's boxers seem to have a 'flat' gusset - one piece of material which stretches all the way from front to back, like us women have in normal, retro 'granny pants'.

Women's boxers, though, seem to have a diamond-shaped piece of material sewn into the gusset area which gets stuck in the crannies of my minge I find very uncomfortable.

First question, then - is there a name for that 'flat' gusset that you get in normal knickers and men's boxers? So I know what I'm searching for!

Second question - is there anywhere that sells women's boxers with this type of 'flat' gusset (or whatever its called)?

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.
I just googled "Inside of women's underwear" which has not filled my evening with joy.

With @TheSkyRaisin, obviously being the biggest fan of M&S knickers! What is that make, Wirarpa? I don't clicks links.

Step one would be my suggestion for a boxer type brief with no gusset/flappy bit.

These are less boxer type but super comfortable because they are bamboo and also have no gusset/flappy bit but the crotch bit is double layered. https://www.sockshop.co.uk/products/ladies-3-pair-sockshop-lazy-panda-bamboo-low-rise-shorties?colour=Black

Haha, I love 'flappy bit' as a late entry into the mix of terminology. Very apt.

You reminded me that I actually have a pair of sock shop shorts (I think they're Lazy Panda) that I bought last year but I bought size 6 in error and ripped the tag off before checking. Too tight doesn't even come close.....

@Limth here you go. One gusset, brand new, washed but never worn 👍

I have worn one 2 of the other pairs I bought - they are really comfortable!

Please can we talk about gussets in women's underwear?

Yes a make called Wirarpa, sold on Amazon. I think I came across them recommended by someone here on MN originally.

That's come up sideways fyi. The seams you can see starting on the left of the picture is the front. No seams at the back

Limth · 25/10/2023 23:29

That's amazing, thanks, @MelanieSal Exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for! So helpful to actually see it

@Limth You're welcome!
The gusset is also only sewn across the top and bottom, so you can put sanitary pad wings under the sides. It's actually brilliant. I've never been so excited about a pair of knickers so I am delighted to have someone to tell about them!

Mossstitch · 25/10/2023 23:35

Asda do ladies boxers with no........ahem, 'flappy bits'........double gusset, cotton and all sewn up nicely plus cheap. Sorry can't do links, technologically challenged, they are on George direct in packs of three.

TinyRebel · 25/10/2023 23:43

While we’re on the subject- a moan about M&S period pants. I don’t know if I just have a particularly forward fanny, but the absorbent gusset bit never, ever seems to come up high enough at the front. Come to think of it, have the same problem with winged sanitary towels, where it’s really difficult to get them positioned properly. It’s the same whatever weight/size I’m at.

Oddballs boxers though, absolutely fine - no caught flappage.

Please tell me I’m not the only one?

ZombiePara · 25/10/2023 23:45

@Limth can confirm I had similar issues with Oddballs girl boxers, and have been thoroughly converted by Step One womens boxers. They're all I wear now!

Limth · 25/10/2023 23:45

@MelanieSal That's also great to know, thank you. And I'm pleased to have started the thread to give you chance to share your new knicker joy!

@TinyRebel nope, you are not alone in that. If/when I use a pad I turn them around and use the slightly longer "back" as the front.

I've spent a fortune on period pants but can't find any I'm super happy with. Most don't have the protection part high enough up at the front for me during my heavier days.

Limth · 25/10/2023 23:49

@ZombiePara Oh wow, huge endorsement!!
I don't get the MN love for Oddballs at all. The patterns are okay and they wash fairly well. But, my God, they're so bloody uncomfortable. I switched to wearing DP's many, many too-small boxers during the summer when I could've made bread in my knickers on the days I was wearing Oddballs.

Edited

I've found ModiBody's boxers to be really good. Super long pad-bit that goes right up the back and front. I have trouble sleeping when I'm on my period so I flip between back-sleeping, stomach-sleeping, side-sleeping and I've had zero issues with leakage or movement or discomfort.

In terms of design, the only thing I have issues with is that their waist band is really snug so I'd go a size up, especially if you get bloating like me.

I mean their "body shorts" when I say boxers, sorry: https://www.modibodi.co.uk/products/classic-boyshort-moderate-heavy-absorbency?nosto_source=cmp&nosto=957078216

This comfy Modibodi boyshort underwear style is great for moderate period and incontinence absorbency and has leak protection from the gusset to the back waistband.

I like Sloggi knickers. They come in a variety of shapes, so don't be put off by seeing only high-legged ones.

MelanieSal · 26/10/2023 00:03

I wear those modibidi shorts too - they are definitely my favourite of all the period pants I've tried.

I also go up a size.

Aparecium · 26/10/2023 00:17

I like this make. I prefer high-waisted, but they have different styles. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B7HV9LJG?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare

Tentaculoose · 26/10/2023 00:22

Thank you @MassiveWordSalad, I'll have a look.

Mouseplant · 26/10/2023 00:44

Following - would love some comfy pants like this.

namestevalian · 26/10/2023 00:48

Don't know if they've been mentioned but Lucy and yak launched boxers

KissTheRains · 26/10/2023 00:50

I had some nice one from Peacocks once...

That's not very helpful..

So I'll be looking at all the links.

Tazzzaaa · 25/10/2023 22:49

It might be worth looking at M&S, I have always found them the best place for comfortable underwear

Me too.. try their full briefs v comfy

I like my trunks/boxers/pants to sit about where they do on this model.

Sloggi do pants which are real granny ones that come half way down your thigh. Sorry can't do links but I got mine off Damart.
