Would you go to Las Vegas alone?

I'm 40 next year and I'm hoping the next decade will be filled with all the places I've always wanted to visit. Within affordability that is. As life has turned out... I'll be doing all of these trips alone.

I've always wanted to visit LV but I've always said it's the only place I'd want to go with company. It just seems like the kind of place you should really be in a pair or a group. I'm not particularly fussed about concerts (as in singers like Adele etc) just really browse around. Eat and drink. Check out the casinos and have a little gamble. Shop. Walk around and just soak it all up really.

Be honest though. Will I look a sad wanker?

I'd be too self-conscious to go on my own, I think solo travel is a bit out of my comfort zone though I used to do it before meeting DH. I've been to LV with family and it was fun though. If I were doing a solo trip I'd prefer NYC or a European city with lots of museums/galleries - I'm happy doing that kind of thing in my own. Or I'd consider a group tour.

HRTQueen · 22/10/2023 23:01

No it’s actually somewhere I wouldn’t want to go alone (I have been a few times no desire to go again) and have travelled/been on holiday alone a number of times

I would find a group to go with it just seems a place to share your time there with another or others

LenBast · 22/10/2023 23:02

My experience of Vegas is that there are loads of single women at the tables who are playing low stakes blackjack etc while their husbands play high stakes poker in another room. You definitely wouldn’t feel out of place.

Mysterian · 22/10/2023 23:29

If you don't have a friend to go with I believe you can hire them there.

GrimGrinningGhosts · 22/10/2023 23:31

I was there earlier this year, though not alone, but it’s a place I’d be happy to visit as a lone female.
Ive been many times over the years and walked up and down the strip at all hours, never felt unsafe at all. The only thing I wasn’t so keen on this time is the law has changed on smoking cannabis. It’s now allowed so the strip stinks as you’re walking. In theory it’s banned from casino floors but in practice there is always the smell in the air. It’s a smell I really dislike and to be repeatedly walking into clouds of it got old very quickly.

fitflopqueen · 22/10/2023 23:51

It’s one place I would definitely travel to alone. The first time was early nineties, had first 24 hrs alone then husband joined me, didn’t gamble and was amazed by the size. Have been many times since, learnt to play poker, eat at nice restaurants ( sitting at the bar can be less daunting) and am happy to walk, Uber, people watch, etc, you will find most Americans love to chat as they like the English accent.

If you are a non smoker stay at the MGM Park, all non smoking, nice pool area and good for food. Go for it and enjoy.

Mirackleeus · 23/10/2023 12:03

I was bothered when I was there. It was only if they realised my brother or my dad was with me they stepped back. I don't have a distinctive sex worker look in the slightest.

We stayed one road off the strip rather than the strip and it was not an area I would stay in again. If you 100% stick to the strip you might be OK but I was still bothered during the evening on the strip.

Feel free to disagree that I had this experience but the OP has posted for a range of opinions and my experience is valid.

Diplidocus4 · 23/10/2023 12:09

Go ! Fabulous place but crazy after a few days , inside the casinos it's timeless - no clocks , air con etc . There's pools and free entertainment and it's the best place to people watch !
Buffets are AMAZING!

itwasdifferentinthe90s · 23/10/2023 12:12

I did go alone

It was fine, I made friends for the evening but went to the Grand Canyon which was fantastic by myself

junbean · 22/10/2023 22:42

What!? No there's not! It's a very family friendly place. There's no more sex workers than anywhere else and none in plain sight to tourists.

I wouldn’t go as far as “very family friendly”, but I would certainly feel safe as a sole female traveler.

I’ve been a number of times, and would jump at the opportunity to go alone.

I’d say stay at the Bellagio if it’s in budget - it’s luxurious, central, has a great pool for a chill day if need be, and is by far and away the best LV hotel I’ve stayed in.

No, I wouldn't go with someone let alone on my own.

It's a nasty naff gambling hell hole.

Have you been? It's really not like that at all. It's a fantastic experience and I don't play in the casinos. The shows, the restaurants, the sights, the party atmosphere are what make it fun

KeithChegwinFromExtrasPopKnob · 23/10/2023 12:32

Fuck it I'm convinced. Thanks ladies it's officially the next big holiday I'm planning to book! Thank you!

I'm not normally one for naff, brash and vulgar but I loved LV. It's all those things and makes no pretence that it isn't. One of my bucket list trips is seeing the La Brea tarpits in Los Angeles so I might tack LV and the Grand Canyon onto that.

@DoratheFlora

you haven't been! Loads of us have & it's nothing like you say.

@KeithChegwinFromExtrasPopKnob

I'm glad you've decided to go. I'd happily go alone. It was a bit if a PITA going with mum, siblings, nieces & nephews. NEVER again, but I prefer to travel alone anyway & definitely not my SIL!!

for me, it's a 'need to go in the summer' place if you don't intend to sit at gambling tables most of the time!!

Have fun!!

It absolutely isn't 😂

Sisterpita · 23/10/2023 13:45

I’ve been to LV on my own and the only advice I have is go for it, but be careful about the time of year. Unless you are a huge F1 fan avoid the couple of months before and after the race, they seem to have turned the whole strip into a building site, Bellagio fountains are off etc.

Disorganisedmess2023 · 23/10/2023 14:21

Mirackleeus · 22/10/2023 20:58

Absolutely not. There's a lot of sex workers in Las Vegas and you wouldn't want to be mistaken for one.

Don't be rediculous. No one would confuse someone in Vegas as a sex worker just because they're by themselves. There's a huge amount of people who go solo, probably more than any other holiday destination due to the casinos but also because there's a lot of large scale conferences there so a lot of people who eat alone etc around their conference schedule. Not a single person will think you're a sex worker ffs. What a stupid comment.

Haha in your opinion. Millions love it, including me.

Disorganisedmess2023 · 23/10/2023 14:25

Op I'll send you a message

mrsbyers · 23/10/2023 14:28

I go every year with my best mate and we quite often spend time alone as she likes to sunbathe and shop more than I do - there are thousands of solo travellers not least due to conferences so you won’t get a second glance

countvoncount · 23/10/2023 14:29

God yes absolutely!!!
Me and DH go often, and we have days when we do our own thing, it's the city where anything goes
I'd love to go totally alone, go go go

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/10/2023 14:36

Absolutely not. There's a lot of sex workers in Las Vegas and you wouldn't want to be mistaken for one

There's a lot of sex workers everywhere, I've travelled a lot on my own and never been mistaken for one (TBF, my resting bitch face probably helps with that).

DilemmaDelilah · 23/10/2023 15:08

I wouldn't go on my own, but I wouldnt go with a partner or a group either. I cannot imagine many places that I would like to go less.
still - each to their own - have a lovely time whatever you decide to do.

AlfredaTheGrape · 23/10/2023 15:14

I certainly would.

Except people mistook me for a sex worker when they thought I was on my own so clearly not ridiculous. Unless you're denying what happened to me happened?
