Board games and card games

Are these pastimes anything you ever do? I used to be quite good at Trivial Pursuit (provided I knew the answers to the questions) and I've won a few games of Scrabble in my time. Oddly enough, I could never get my head round Junior Scrabble. I've never learned to play chess, could manage draughts and backgammon. Never played Cluedo or Monopoly. I must have played snakes and ladders in the last fifty years but not ludo.

I occasionally break out the cards for a game of patience or solitaire, whatever it's called now. I used to like pontoon and straight draw poker but I can't remember the rules to the latter. Are games like bridge and whist still a thing now? Bridge clubs certainly used to be a big social draw. And the scoring information for contract bridge could be found in every pack of cards!

I also used to own Connect 4 and Headache (a rehashed Frustration for those old enough to remember). C4 was pretty good, as I recall. I never got into Battleships.

I take it you don't have DC?

PhotoDad · 22/10/2023 20:46

Boardgaming has exploded in the past 20 or so years. There are now games of every complexity, length, theme, and number of players you can imagine. I'm a big boardgamer and the rest of my family range from 'tolerant' to 'enthusiastic.'

Love love love them ❤️

Top faves include Rummicub, Logo Game, Articulate, Backgammon, Connect 4 and Monopoly Deal (cards).

CuntRYMusicStar · 22/10/2023 20:50

We play board games and card games as a family with dc aged 12 and 8. Current favourite card game is Skyjo. Board games we like are labyrinth, monopoly, cluedo, horrible histories board game, scrabble, chess. Card games are uno, black Jack, solitaire, taco cat goat cheese pizza.

We also like banana grams and sushi go. The dc love a family board game night so we're making the most of it before they're too cool for us :-)

Bemyclementine · 22/10/2023 20:52

I have DC aged 6 and 8. We play dobble and Uno, kids monopoly though I'm sure normal monopoly would be fine, jenga, connect 4, guess who, snakes and ladders. Lots of others to.we love a board game.

Rogue. No, I don't have children. Why do you ask?

What @PhotoDad said. There are so many board games now beyond the classics. We play loads and go to board game cafes occasionally to try out new games. I can play the classic Scrabble/Monopoly/snakes and ladders but generally prefer newer games. Far too many to name though and depends who I play with. DC are super keen and (with some assistance/adaptation) enjoy playing games aged at older kids as well as the junior versions of adult games. Quite a few friends and parents at the school have turned out to be into games, so it is definitely seeing a boost in popularity as a hobby. You can even play online with platforms like Board Game Arena now and some board games have app versions too.

It wasn't a dig.

I guessed you didn't have DC because if you did you're likely to play games with them.

A lot of people on mn are parents, and we play boardgames with our children or did when they were younger

drivinmecrazy · 23/10/2023 13:46

Board games and cards have been a mainstay throughout our DCs childhood.
They are now 18 & 22.
We've spent many a Sunday afternoon playing games.
Fortunately as they've grown we've found some wonderful age appropriate games.
DD learnt backgammon from watching DH & I play when she was six.
Then I begrudgingly taught her how to play chess and now she's a whizz!
This is a pic of what's on our landing at the moment and I would recommend these to any adult or child. Have had so much fun with them.
A few are missing cos DD2 has taken some away to uni with her.

Long gone are the days of cluedo & monopoly as the only options.

Now brooding for a great family games night.
Roll on Christmas!!
We always buy a new game so any recommendations would be wonderful

@drivinmecrazy For teen or adult DC I would suggest "Pandemic" (which takes an hour to play, and was published WELL before Covid...)

For an amazing four/five player experience that takes around 15 hours to play (in 1-hour chunks), there's "The King's Dilemma" (which is like you're in Game of Thrones).

Terfosaurus · 23/10/2023 18:54

We have a bookcase which is bursting with board/ card games.

Off the top of my head I can think of
Board Games
3 versions of Cluedo.
Harry Potter battle for Hogwarts
Harry Potter Scrabble.
Disney Sidekicks
Dragonology
Snakes and Ladders
2 Roald Dahl games (can't remember which)
Wakunda... something.
Monopoly
A wooden games compendium thing

Card games
Monopoly Deal
Uno
Dos
Unstable Unicorns
A pack of cards that we play 21, shithead, spoons, chase the ace, various forms of patience.

There are more but I can't think of the names off the top of my head.

I don't know how to play chess. Dc do not they aren't huge fans. No idea on whist, the old people in the care home I used to work in played. No idea how to play poker.

We play games a lot here though.

TwistofFate · 23/10/2023 19:43

Love love love boardgames. My favourites are Articulate, Carcassonne, Labyrinth and Flash point. My kids are too young to play any of them so we play lots of Orchard games like bug bingo, snap and noughts & crosses.

MargaretThursday · 23/10/2023 20:35

Our children are now young adults, but we still play.

Last week dd was visiting from uni with a friend and they wanted to play Cluedo.

Crabacus · 23/10/2023 20:53

We play a lot of games and used to have Sunday afternoons designated as family games but teens are less interested at the moment.
I like word games like scrabble, boggle, upwords. Loathe monopoly!
we also play Cluedo, labyrinth, ticket to ride, horrified, ingenious and lots more!

for Christmas fun I'd recommend 6 second scribbles - very entertaining!

Frenchfancy · 23/10/2023 21:56

We play loads of board games, everything from labyrinth to seven wonders.

This afternoon we have gone old school with several games of backgammon followed by about 5 rounds of knockout whist.

TheTecknician · 25/10/2023 04:41

Glad to hear all these games are alive and well. I remember other oddities from childhood such as Totopoly and Buccaneer but I don't know if they really caught on.

Recently played a relatively new one called outsmarted which is a cross between millionaire and rrivial pursuit and it both an old style board game and online and everyone really enjoyed it.

Robotalkingrubbish · 25/10/2023 05:13

We always play board games with family. We love them. We have loads of them. We like playing with the children but also some of the ones more for adults. We generally like the ones that make us laugh. It’s so much more fun to play games than sitting and talking. We still play monopoly it’s still one of the best board games. We also like Pass the Bomb and that game where you have to draw something and pass it on. It’s so funny as some of us are completely hopeless at drawing.

Blueisacolour · 25/10/2023 06:31

OP, we have a really old version of Totopoly! But we ended up playing the Really Nasty Horse Racing Game more often. Our games cupboard under the stairs is chock full though, both of old/traditional games like many of the ones already mentioned (we once had 7 different versions of monopoly), and new games like Settlers of Catan (strategy), Seven Wonders (cards), Ticket to Ride (building train lines) Goryo (2 player cat and mouse) and all sorts of others. We always played when the DC were growing up, and DC1 now runs a board game society :) There are so many different types of games now, including many cooperative games where it's players versus the game (Pandemic, Forbidden Island) or talking games (Avalon: the resistance). Lately we are playing more Maj Jong (Chinese tile game, not dissimilar to the card game rummy). But there is such a variety available now to suit different people and situations. Some take 15 mins, some all day. Board game cafes springing up mean you can try out different ones, and the ones with apps mean you can play online against either the AI or other people. It's a great time to love board games as there is so much variety now :)

TheTecknician · 26/10/2023 21:40

Who makes the best quality and most affordable playing cards ? Do you use Bridge or Poker size ?

I have two packs of wrapped, unopened David Westnedge cards. Still in their gold box. I bought them in a charity shop a few years ago. They seem too nice to use! Piatnik and Carta Mundi appear to be the posh cards and Waddington No.1 the classic go-to cards.

Trivial Pursuit is a classic, and winning at Scrabble is always a satisfying feeling. I can relate to the struggle with Junior Scrabble - it can be surprisingly tricky! Chess is a whole different world, but it's never too late to learn. Draughts and backgammon are great choices for some strategy and fun. Monopoly and Cluedo are classics, you might enjoy them if you give them a try. As for card games, I'm a fan of solitaire too, and who can forget the excitement of poker games? Bridge and whist might not be as popular as they once were, but there are still enthusiasts out there. It's amazing how much history and tradition is wrapped up in these games. By the way, have you ever tried your hand at online gaming? There are some great platforms like Casino Malaysia that offer a wide range of games, from card games to slots.

Thankyou Malia. I was really just curious to see if these older forms of entertainment still had a place in the modern world and evidently they do. Living alone, my options are limited!

terrywynne · 30/10/2023 14:06

There are lots of options these days to play online (with friends/strangers/against AI)- both traditional games and new ones so you don't need to feel your options are limited if you do want to play board games!

Ragwort · 30/10/2023 14:10

Love board games ... unfortunately we over did it a bit during Covid and it's hard to motivate my DH & DS to play more than a couple of times a year now ☹️. My DS does play chess online still if that counts.

Bridge clubs still exist, my DM plays three times a week.
