How long from meeting to marriage?

BerriesNutsConkers · 22/10/2023 11:00

Met dh in Jan 2004, married in August 2004.
50 guests, church wedding, reception for 50 at a local country house with 3 course meal and wine. Evening disco and buffet with additional guests.
Cost us £5000
I made my dress and my one bridesmaids, mum made the cake, we used family cars, a friend was photographer (free), family did the flowers, no charges from church or organist as family links.
I couldn't imagine spending years planning a wedding!

Interested to hear others stories.

Started going out in November 1991.
Started living together in 1993.
We were delighted to find out we were compatible 24/7 and got married in August 1995.
So, just under 4 years.
I think we spent about a year planning our wedding (church, 40 people, restaurant, family and friends helped with dress, hair, flowers, cake, car and photos).

20 years. Eloped as we just did it for the legality, couldn't be bothered with a wedding.

We met in June 2016, moved in together September 2017, got engaged December 2020, married August 2022 and had DS in June 2023. We were sure we wanted to get married when we moved in together but DH is very practical and wanted to wait until we were more financially stable. We were also quite young when we met (I was 18) so I think that factored into us waiting as long as we did.

motherofawhirlwind · 22/10/2023 16:40

28+ years so far

summerhols2 · 22/10/2023 16:43

My cousin was engaged for 26 years before they finally got married. Grin

DelurkingAJ · 22/10/2023 16:44

Met 2004, married 2010, DSs 2012 and 2015. Still happily married. Only divorces in my friendship circle are those who married straight out of uni…everyone else has so far stood the test of time.

From meeting to engaged - 6 weeks
From engagement to wedding - a year
Married for nearly 30 years

PIL were engaged after a long weekend, married a year later after only meeting a few times when he was on leave from the RAF. Married for over 50 years.

Misspotterscat · 22/10/2023 16:49

Got together, three years later bought a house, engaged at 4 years, married at 5 years and a baby on the way at 6 years.

Mothership4two · 22/10/2023 16:54

16 years - bf/gf for 13. We were teenage friends first. Two year engagement. Been married for 25 years.

Spacemoon · 22/10/2023 16:55

Got engaged 3 months after we met, got married a year to the day we met. Almost a decade later now and still going strong despite most people thinking we were mad and claiming it would never last past our first anniversary 😂

I'm all for people getting married in their own timeframe, or not at all, but I will never understand people who get engaged and then just stay engaged for years or decades. Might as well have stayed just as partners! But I'm sure those people find those of us who get married quick a bit odd, different strokes for different folks and as long as both in the couple are happy that's all that matters!!

Motnight · 22/10/2023 16:56

32 years.

Didn't want to rush things 😬

Mumof1andacat · 22/10/2023 16:57

First met September 2001, together April 2003, engaged Feb 2005, brought a house may 2007, married June 2009 (we were 24 and 25 by this point) still my forever ❤️

goodgriefsean · 22/10/2023 16:57

Met October 2008, engaged March 2011, Married September 2013.
We were fairly young and skint when we met and the engagement was always going to be a couple of years while we saved for a house as well as wedding.
2 DC later and just celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary.

ThreeRingCircus · 22/10/2023 17:09

Met November 2011, moved in together after 18 months into a rental and then bought a doer-upper in 2014 which took all our time and energy. We got engaged in Oct 2015 and married the following year in September 2016 so approx five years from meeting to being married. First DD born the year after we got married.

The only thing I wish I'd done differently is that I wish I'd had the confidence to wear what I wanted to (a trouser suit.... I almost never wear dresses.) I caved to family pressure and bought a perfectly nice traditional wedding dress but I look back at photos and it's just not "me." I wish I'd stuck to my guns on that one but the rest was perfect.

ThisIsntThe80sPat · 22/10/2023 17:16

We were together 4 and a half years til engagement then married on our 6 year relationship anniversary. We're at 13 years together and 7 married now with 2 kids.
I wanted to be together longer so I was sure of him before having kids..

Pollyputthekettleonha · 22/10/2023 21:16

WithASpider · 22/10/2023 22:33

Met Aug 2002, engaged Nov. First child born late 2003, married April 2004. Coming up on 20 years.

FoFanta · 22/10/2023 22:39

11 years and 2 children before we got married. Didn't get engaged, didn't have a big wedding - church round the corner, immediate family and a nice meal in a local restaurant. Been together for 21 years now. Wouldn't change a thing.
