Sick of overactive bladder, anyone managed to stop this?

There's no burning or pain, no other symptoms. Just have to go a lot, but only a small amount will come out. When I get ready for work in the morning, I have to go around 3 times in an hour. Over the course of an 8 hour day I can go around 5 times some days.
Fizzy drinks are the worst, they go right through me, so I rarely drink them anymore. Don't drink alcohol at all, don't drink tea or coffee.
I'm 32, no possibility that I'm pregnant, had this for years. No other symptoms, feel well in myself.
I've previously been to the Drs for it and was given nitrofurantoin, which helped but it's just come back. I've had it for years really but just completely fed up with it.
Grateful to hear any stories.

Yes I overcame it mostly. Some of the cure for me was pregnancy which might not suit everyone 😂I tried drugs with little relief cos my issue was in my overly tight pelvic floor. Frequency and urgency led me to holding tighter again and it was a feedback loop of getting worse and worse..pregnancy hormones relaxed my muscles and gave me a chance to get out of the feedback loop. If you get temporary relief when drinking alcohol that might be a indicator that you have this issue.
Pelvic floor physio helped me enormously once the pregnancies were over including dry needling of my hips which was always a big release of the tightness. I hold all my stress in my hips and Pelvic floor.

Could have written this myself. Always worse if I don't drink enough ( 8or so cup of decaf) think it's a result of water tablets taken for years ( not now) and age.
Love to know the cure as trip's revolve around toilets !!

Am I the only person who thinks 5 times in 8 hours is okay if you drink a lot of water?

I sat through Oppenheimer without needing the loo...I only had a teeny bit of water though.

Maybe it is ok, I just feel like I hardly see colleagues going, maybe twice a day max! Maybe it is normal though. Thanks for all replies.

Have you been tested for diabetes??

when my bloods are 'under control'its all fine, when it's not my bladder plays up. It's usually the first thing that gets me back on the low carb wagon.

Squirrelsnut · 21/10/2023 20:22

Are you sure you don't have an extra tube going to your bladder from the kidneys? I know 2 women with this who need the loo loads.

I used one these (vesicare) and it helped enormously

That was my reaction too. I do drink quite a lot of water, always have a glass at hand, and don't think this amount of weeing is unusual.

I do stop drinking water after about 9pm to ensure I don't have to get up in the night.

Partyinfrance · 21/10/2023 21:08

I do drink water, but just an average amount I guess. I did test for diabetes but it came back negative. That's a good point, I'll look into it. Thanks

I know someone who's had this for most of her life, she always thought there must be a physical issue with her bladder, but actually turns out it was psychological since she had a tough childhood. She always felt anxious about making it to the loo within time, and if there was any hint of needing to go, she would sense that as an urgency instead.

Mental health can affect us physically in so many different ways - please ask yourself if this could be you as well. If so then any bladder tablets won't work.

I’ve always needed the toilet frequently. Also stop drinking to avoid getting up in the night but often still get up at least once, often twice

Sometimes I go for a wee, then need another 10 minutes later. It’s horrible because I have actually wet myself before now. It started when I came off HRT, so I know it’s something to do with decreased hormones.

I had no idea about this link!

My last boss used to be like this and drank lots of tea.

ditto one of my aunties. I wish I was like that too, but it definitely doesn't sound abnormal to me.

I know you can train your bladder to be less demanding, but it is harder when older. And, yes, that urgency ... that's worse.

BandicootCrash · 21/10/2023 22:18

Drink more water. I know it sounds counter I tuitive, but it really helps.

Totaly · 21/10/2023 22:23

Do you eat a lot of sugary stuff? The fizzy drink is probably down to your body expelling the sugar. Hence the PO going low carb to help.

Mouseplant · 21/10/2023 22:29

Ugh, I have this. When I'm going out for the day I dehydrate on purpose to avoid constant loo trips. I remember when all the toilets were closed during COVID, it was so hard.

I've heard good things about pelvic floor physiotherapy.

RoseAndRose · 21/10/2023 22:30

When you say you've had this for years, how many years is that?

Because there is such a thing as covid bladder (just one of the many parts of the body that damned virus can impair) and I'm not sure what can be done about it, other than hope it goes away spontaneously

5 times in 8 hours? Honestly I need to go every 20 minutes in the morning! (But I know I also have an overactive bladder first this, but it usually calms down in the afternoon)

Nat6999 · 21/10/2023 22:55

Are you on any medication for it & have you had the urodynamics tests done?

ISeeARedDoorAndIWantToBreakIn · 21/10/2023 23:29

I’m a bit like this. I get up at least twice in the night, but my “record” is four times 🙄

Partyinfrance · 21/10/2023 23:35

I do eat a lot of sugar unfortunately and really need to cut down.
I'm on setraline but not currently on anything else.
It's been for around 10 years I'd say, unfortunately! Sorry to hear it's affecting a lot of people.

Do you get any pain, or do you just feel the need to go to the loo?

hotcandle · 22/10/2023 00:00

Antihistamines completely resolved this for me. I was on the verge of a mental breakdown. I had bladder irritation but urethral burning, too.

Fexofenadine or Lortadine. The fexofenadine is a little more expensive, but I got Lortadine from my local pound land.

After a couple of courses of antibiotics for a really stubborn UTI, my bladder lining was irritated. An antihistamine completely resolved it, and I took them over 6 months. Now I'm completely back to normal on no tablets at all.

It was a bit of trial and error to get the right antihistamine that worked (lots of different types) but they're split into Type 1 and Type 2 so if you pick up a few boxes in pound land something should work.

The added positive is that antihistamines are relatively safe and cheap, so well worth trying OP.
