I have already decided to learn Spanish, but what else shall I do? All suggestions considered!

I'd sign up to some sort of academic course where I have to dial in to lessons etc. that way you will still have interacting with people and keeping your mind active 😀.

Yes, I will look into this. Its a good idea

What about looking at local college courses etc? There may be cake decorating, flower arranging etc. or even local groups at a church like this?

Since covid the ability to dial into things is much improved and you may be able to join groups via zoom or teams or something.

Also have a look at your local macmillan group. My mum made loads of friends through this

itsgettingweird · 21/10/2023 19:45

Or a local book club if you like reading?

wow, I've never heard of post crossings or post pals, they sound really great - better get in a big stock of cards and stamps - that is definitely something I am going to do

good suggestion, but I am not sure anyone would be able to rely on me for anything time sensitive, I might be better some stages than others

Search for your "local environmental records centre, or LERC" and contact them about digitising old hard-copy records they hold. Most, if not all, hold "old" records and are waiting for funding or volunteers to digitise it. Unfortunately it's not well advertised, but is an extremely valuable task. And, because they've already waited for long, it's unlikely they'll have any issues with your availability. :)

Another idea would be citizen science. There are hundreds of camera trap photo ID projects out there and mapping projects, both waiting for volunteers with a computer!

Good luck :)

Try the free courses on Coursera or Futurelearn. Lots of different things to choose from and keep your brain active.

Somewhatchallenging · 21/10/2023 20:02

What do you normally do in your days?

CopperLion · 21/10/2023 20:04

I would definitely do an online course. There as some amazing ones since Covid. I’d also spend lots of time reading for pleasure.

ismu · 21/10/2023 20:06

Just sit. Appreciate stuff. Hate on some stuff.
Don't try to do anything - something will come up that you did not expect!

NotMeNoNo · 21/10/2023 20:08

I would have all my needlework queued up: embroidery (many wonderful kits), or tapestry, knitting, maybe patchwork, learn to make lace. Plus an Audible subscription.

That is something I have not thought of

There are some great YouTube channels for this purpose. I recommend BellaCoco.

What about some online volunteering?
It's such a boost to wellbeing when you feel you're able to help others.
So much stuff you can do from helping research by counting animals on webcams to befriending and listening to kids read.

Get a PlayStation (or whichever console would work best for you). Everything from walking simulators to relaxing arty games to engrossing role-playing to full-on action, depending on your capabilities and mood.

evryevrytime · 21/10/2023 20:23

I really like the BBC Maestro and Create Academy courses. They can be done on your phone or iPad and you just dip in and out. I've done one on interior design and one on creative writing and they're really well put together.

Hope your treatment goes well.

Read books, cross stitch, Duolingo App to learn a language, learn about a piece of history or politics that you're interested in, do a GCSE/A level/masters, lots of self facials/face masks/nail varnish/learn how to do nail art, learn to draw or paint, paint by numbers, gem art, write letters to old friends, online classes, online book club, blow bubbles, sit down baking, get a small pet that can be live in a cage next to you e.g. a rat or gerbil, magazine subscription, get a newspaper delivered daily.

Octavia64 · 21/10/2023 20:25

Get an electric wheelchair (hire or buy) and get out at least a little bit.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 21/10/2023 20:26

Get people to give you all their used home decor magazines. You’ll probably get really fed up of your walls so make collages and idea maps of new decor ideas for when you’re up and about.
the pet is a great idea too.

See if you have a local cancer support centre which can offer online support groups or gentle activity (which can be done seated). It can really help to have a time when you need to join in - give a bit of structure to your day.

And try these online sessions Move Dance Feel

Move Dance Feel

Move Dance Feel is a community project helping women affected by cancer reconnect with themselves, through a shared creative dance experience.

I recently learned how to decorate a cupcake with a rose from YouTube. There are several different flowers you can learn to pipe all with buttercream. I make the cakes, make the butter cream then sit on the sofa and practice my piping skills.

During Covid I learned to crochet from Youtube and made a large baby blanket using a sort of waffle stitch.

Why not study a GCSE or an A level in a subject you think would be interesting. You can sit the exam at a designated centre if you want to.

Find some Netflix series to watch when you don't feel up to anything else.

Wrap up Xmas presents and make gift tags from cutting up old Xmas cards.
