How much is a Gregg's cheese and onion pasty?

I'm unwell with some sort of cold virus, very snotty and grotty. DH has just been out and offered to get me something for lunch. I had a real fancy for a hot cheese and onion slice, so on his way home he stopped off and got that for me and a sausage roll for him. This is at a local bakery. Not Gregg's but nothing fancy!

Anyway, so the server put £3.50 into the till and DH went to pay but ... NO! this was just for the C&OS - the sausage roll was another £2.20. So he paid £5.70 for those two little pastry items. I mean aibu?

We don't often have them so it was a real shock Shock. No wonder we are broke all the time Sad.

Did he say he was eating in? They've changed the pricing and it's more for eating.

Pretty sure a sausage roll is £1.40 ish and they a deal for six bakes for under a tenner.

SecondUsername4me · 20/10/2023 14:39

But Greggs is likely going to be cheaper than an independent bakery, as they have economies of scale. He didn't go to Greggs did he? So asking their prices is pointless.

Greg’s is crap! I like Sayers much better, a sayers C&O is £2

Bakeries vary a lot in both quality and price.

Greggs is cheap and their baked pastries/ sausage rolls are made from ultra processed rubbish. It's like McDonald's really.

Getting them from a local bakery is not the same as getting them from Gregg's.

The local bakery have likely made them on site with fresh ingredients.

It's a completely different thing really and yes, in my local bakery that's about what you would pay.

LubaLuca · 20/10/2023 14:44

Under £2 for sure, I think even if you wanted to eat in.

DaughterNo2 · 20/10/2023 14:46

£1.60/£1.70 ish

Harrriet · 20/10/2023 14:48

Ds3 says sausage rolls are £1.20 or 4 for £3.50. He hasn't tried the cheese and onion thing though but says he will have by Monday!

Itjustgoesonandon · 20/10/2023 14:54

About 2 quid these days

Agreed. Matters not one bit what they charge in Greggs, he didn't go there

DogsDinner · 20/10/2023 18:27

The last time I had one I think it was £1.60. That was about a year ago though. It tasted of cold gloop, so I haven't been tempted since. I prefer Mortimer's cheese and onion puff, nice pastry, but it is closer to £3.

I first encountered Gregg's cheese and onion pasty back in the eighties, when I recall them costing 17p! But maybe that's my memory playing tricks. I've no idea if that makes them more or less affordable. They were delicious back then though, and always served hot.

FitAt50 · 20/10/2023 18:38

Cheese and onion slice is £1.85. Maybe your husband is confused or exaggerating.

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 20/10/2023 18:40

£4.50 for a cheese and onion pasty at a local bakery near work.

DiDonk · 20/10/2023 18:58

I saw a sausage roll, well a brioche lyonnaise which is actually less nice despite being 'nicer' for 9 euros last week in Paris!

Did you even read what I wrote?

Prices of baked goods have gone up lots because the ingredients and energy costs have increased so much. A friend runs a cake business and the cost of butter alone has increased so much she is now really struggling to make money.

Uncooperativefingers · 20/10/2023 19:07

I don't think Gregg's pricing is consistent across the country.

But still and independent bakery is very different to a Gregg's and I'd expect to pay more. Especially if the cheese and onion pasty actually tasted of cheese and the sausage roll of sausage.

(I enjoy both, but they are their own things ie, when I feel like a sausage roll I want one that tastes of sausage. When I want a Greggs sausage roll, then only that will do)

Curlygirl06 · 20/10/2023 19:19

I got a free sausage roll today in Greggs, I have one every Friday through the O2 app. I bought one as well, that was £1.20.

jmh740 · 20/10/2023 19:21

Was it a standard greggs on one attached to a Services?

CantFindTheBeat · 20/10/2023 19:25

According to this, OP, a sausage roll is £1.20 (like a PP said, and a cheese bake is £1.70.

menuprice.co/uk/greggs-menu

So your DH has paid more than double.

Were the products better? Greggs is mass market, mass produced, so obvs can price low, but they are also very highly processed, average quality, which for the price point seems ok.

So whether the price your DH paid was reasonable depends on if you got a twice-superior and convenient product?

Was it nice?

Sandalholidays12 · 20/10/2023 19:37

I think it is reasonable and I agree with the poster it depends on the location of the bakery too (massively).

You can't expect Greggs prices from your local bakery OP.

LakeTiticaca · 20/10/2023 20:23

No he's been ripped off. At that price I would guess the assistant has charged double what he should have paid. Send him back to complain

TomatoSandwiches · 20/10/2023 20:29

Some people are not reading that your husband bought his items from an independent bakery not Greggs.

YABU to expect mass produced filler Gregg prices from a local bakery tbh.
Our local does SR and C&O pasties that are so much superior, gladly pay the price for those when in the mood.

BeDenimHiker · 26/03/2025 14:56

As of March 2025, Greggs' Cheese & Onion Bake is priced at £2.35. This savory pastry contains 440 calories per serving. For those interested in enjoying this treat at home, a frozen pack of two Cheese & Onion Bakes is available at Iceland for £3.50.

Butteredtoast55 · 26/03/2025 14:59

Gregg's C&O pasties are horrible and I'm no stranger to eating a bit of rubbish when I'm in the mood. For those of us in the Midlands, it's Birds all the way for me! Their pasties are flaky and gorgeous.
