Does anyone have a 'fun' car in addition to their daily runaround?

I'm perfectly aware that this is a very self indulgent thing!
I used to have a little sports car... nothing expensive; a Smart Roadster...and I LOVED it. Totally impractical (and leaked like a sieve).

Now I have a practical little Fiat Panda 4x4. Fits the dog in the boot, fits the dgs's car seat, even though it's small. It's 10 years old and I'll keep it til it conks as it's cheap to run.

BUT... I want a roadster again. I just WANT one. They are 20 years old now and rare, but one has come up for sale near me, 3K . I don't have expensive hobbies (mine are all free), or go out, I have a part time job and do Granny care the rest of the week, I walk the dog... that's it.

DH is currently spending money doing up an old van.. costing far more than the car, and says we can afford for me to have it. But I know it's 3K we could save....
(we aren't wealthy by any means but we've just finished the mortgage yay)

I know I shouldn't but I WANT to...

Go for it! Not me, but my brother has a GT3 Porsche, impractical for daily use but he goes away with friends also in their fun cars for trips to circuits/road trips etc
Enjoy!

There was a Gino d’Acampo thing on the other day where he was tootling around in one of these, and now I want one.

Welcome back to the Smart Roadster Club madness! 😃

Tbh I wouldn't because the icebergs are melting and it's going to cause starvation, death, disease and war. We all need to reduce our carbon footprint and buying a sporty toy car just for fun very much isn't doing that.

Well, I tested the Roadster... and it's in fantastic condition (better than my previous)
So HELL YES... I'm getting my fun car, and I will be that ridiculous middle aged lady with the big grin driving it!!!

Hooray. Congratulations - have fun and ignore the fun suckers. I personally think it's far more environmentally friendly to keep, use and maintain an old car rather than buying new. Reduce, reuse, etc!!

The human race is doomed anyway, so we might as well have some fun before we make ourselves extinct. 😁

While this is a fair point, until places like America make an effort we aren't going to see much of a difference. People still fly all over the place for holidays etc, that is way worse than driving a car. Veganism and vegetarianism are two of the best things we can do to reduce our carbon footprint- I already moved to vegan 30 years ago, so driving my petrol fun midlife crisis car with low emissions isn't my big worry.
Maybe a little less judgement.

I assume you don't drive at all, are veggie/vegan , never holiday abroad and have no children or pets? If so... congratulations... sounds a very..tame.. life

If not... maybe a little less judgement?

I'm veggie, all but two holidays in the last 10 years have been in a tent in the uk. My TWO cars will have a combined engine size of less that most of the cars on the road (the Roadie has a 700cc engine!) and I drive less than 5000 miles a year . I recycle, I reuse, I grow my own veg.

But if I'm dooming the planet by having had children, and pets... might as well have some fun while the ship goes down!!

I can only drive one car at once, therefore every extra car I buy (secondhand, so nothing is being made for me) takes it off the road and actually reduces the time it spends driving. Therefore I’m helping by buying more cars…

Been married 30yrs+ and we have always had "fun" cars alongside our daily drivers.
We also both liked our motorcycles so usually had one or two in the garage as well.
As a PP pointed out, you can only drive/ride one at a time so as the vehicles already exist, you aren't increasing pollution (and by the way, have NEVER flown anywhere on holiday).

You can only drive one at once!

And anyway, I see far more buses carrying around nothing but air and maybe a handful of passengers, pumping out emissions, tyre particles, etc., which is a lot worse than a car. Same with trains - a lot of nothing but air being moved around outside peak times and busy routes.
