Does anyone have a 'fun' car in addition to their daily runaround?

I'm perfectly aware that this is a very self indulgent thing!
I used to have a little sports car... nothing expensive; a Smart Roadster...and I LOVED it. Totally impractical (and leaked like a sieve).

Now I have a practical little Fiat Panda 4x4. Fits the dog in the boot, fits the dgs's car seat, even though it's small. It's 10 years old and I'll keep it til it conks as it's cheap to run.

BUT... I want a roadster again. I just WANT one. They are 20 years old now and rare, but one has come up for sale near me, 3K . I don't have expensive hobbies (mine are all free), or go out, I have a part time job and do Granny care the rest of the week, I walk the dog... that's it.

DH is currently spending money doing up an old van.. costing far more than the car, and says we can afford for me to have it. But I know it's 3K we could save....
(we aren't wealthy by any means but we've just finished the mortgage yay)

I have an mx5 as my fun car! Vw scirocco for going to work and doing the shopping, and the mx5 for trips into the countryside at the weekend.

In addition to my Rolls, I’ve got a nippy little lambo which I enjoy pootling about in.

Thanks @Inkypot - I haven't test driven one yet but assuming I like it when I do I'm pretty sure that will be the way I go.

My mortgage renews in jan 25 so probably need to get that done before I take on any other large financial commitment's.

Good to hear it works as a family car though.

My H has a lotus as a fun car. I like it but don’t love it. So we have a knackered (engine not bodywork) Mk1 MX5 on its way this weekend that he’s going to get going for me. I loved the one I had pre kids but the sills were knackered.

our daily run cars are very practical. One a small electric, one an old estate for family trips and tip runs!

I had a little Smart ForTwo convertible which I absolutely loved. Sadly had to get rid of it as I needed a bit more space so now have a Fiat 500 sport which is fine but nowhere near as much fun as the Smart. If I had a garage I’d have a classic mini as a second car but I’d have to save up for a very long time!

I have a fun 7 tonne truck, does that count? Bloody love it!

You'd love my DH..... he has a whole collection of them 😂 (fun cars, not the same type as yours!)

We've got a 20 year old Volvo Cabriolet that we call our "Ice-cream car" we use in when the weather is nice - to go for a drive to the coast.

Bought it back in 2007 and can't let it go. I got all the leaks fixed with the help of other roadster owners. The owners clubs are incredibly supportive and friendly and I'm one of the moderators on theroadster.net and their FB page. Been on loads of rallies and runs and meetings with them.

Relative has a 1936 Austin A7. It is a lot of fun to go for a drive in despite a max speed of 30mph, lol. There are no seat belts so it's also quite a hairy ride.

We have a fun car and no regrets. Go for it! Sounds like you have a passion and will genuinely enjoy it.

I do. My daily is a Jaguar XF, lovely and modern, big and spacious. My toy is a 1990 BMW E30. Absolutely adore it and love that it's older than I am! Do it, life is too short.

Yes we have a Lotus 2-eleven and a Ferrari FF.
The Lotus is more a track toy, the FF more like a weekend cruiser.

I have Eric. He’s my mate. He’s a red MX-5, and he’s absolutely wonderful.

He really doesn’t cost me much (not that I care), particularly as Mk1 MX-5s are now seen as modern classics. The value of good rust-free ones have been rising for several years and in future can only go one way. As normal cars all become boring, identical, characterless electric white goods differentiated only by their badges, old cars with genuine character which are actually fun to drive will become highly sought after.

My mk1 that’s on its way is red. I am so excited!

Well, I tested the Roadster... and it's in fantastic condition (better than my previous)
So HELL YES... I'm getting my fun car, and I will be that ridiculous middle aged lady with the big grin driving it!!!

You're in a good position so if you want it - go for it. Life is too short.

However make sure you do still want it! My partner bought an Mx-5 and I absolutely hate it. So hard to get in and out of, too low to the ground, too cramped. I avoid driving the thing at all costs!
