Hybrid cars with big boots

Myneedycat · 18/10/2023 12:47

Advice needed in the best hybrid car with a big boot which is economical in fuel for long motorway journeys.
I have thought about
Ford Kuga
Honda CRV
Kia Sportage
Skoda Superb

Not all of these are available in hybrid though. Currently we have a petrol car which drinks fuel.

The back seat seems ok to me but we dont have child seats or ever had more than 2 smallish adults in it. The only thing I don't like is the seatbelt position but that's not uncommon in many cars (I'm short)

We have a RAV4, boot size is great, one of the main reasons we went for it as we have dogs. For an SUV it gets decent mpg but it's not that much better than my previous petrol estate, especially on motorway journeys, it's much less thirsty round town.

They're expensive to buy so I'm not sure that from a purely economic view they make sense if you're mainly doing motorway trips.

What constitutes a big boot? Genuinely curious. I have 2 big dogs and we’ve not found a hybrid bigger than Discovery boot.

prove me wrong someone!

We have the RAV4 too and the boot's massive compared to the other cars we've had. It's a very comfortable drive.

Electrictache · 19/10/2023 18:40

I wanted a Sportage but actually really disliked it when I test drove. We haven't bought one yet but really liked the Tucson and CRV.

Didn't Mitsubishi pull out of the UK?

Myneedycat · 19/10/2023 19:07

Basically we need a boot that’s big enough to lug stuff around and put suitcases in the boot for holidays. Would be helpful to have enough space for two adults and a child on the back seat when family are visiting. Most driving would be around town with trips on the motorway to visit relatives about every three months . Fuel
economy important too.

Prius plus- 7seats but some/all back seats can flap down to make a really big boot (discontinued though so they are all 4yrs or older)

Volvo XC40 plug in hybrid! Love it, boot space is big, enough room for 2 adults and a car seat in the back (a bit squished with the isofix base but it works!)

I think I'd test drive a Skoda Octavia iV estate, it's a plug-in hybrid with a big boot.

You can't get a PHEV version of the Superb.

You can get a PHEV version of the Superb - I own one and the boot is massive!

We went from a Kodiaq to the Superb iV for much better fuel economy.

It’s very roomy. 5 of us including three teen boys went on a camping trip in it and managed to squeeze all our gear in!

Ah, i stand corrected!

Caspianberg · 19/10/2023 20:10

Have you considered fully electric? The Volkswagen id4 boot is huge.

Yes we had one as a hire car recently. It was so impressive.

I don’t want a plug in though or fully electric .

Why not take trainers and use them to drive and change into your boots when you get there?

AnotherEmma · 19/10/2023 20:18

Why not plug in?

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 19/10/2023 20:20

Dh has a Toyota RAV4 company car, the boot is decent sized. He’s about to get a KIA EV6.

Bluffy · 19/10/2023 21:59

I drive a Hybrid Toyota Auris Estate - we have taken the flat base out of the boot revealing LOADS of extra space around the spare wheel housing. We can fit four large suitcases and a huge pram in the boot. Good fuel economy, reliable workhorse car (mine is 8 years old).

Mumaway · 19/10/2023 22:14

I had a Toyota CHR, boot smaller than expected. Then Rav 4, excellent all round and brilliant features. Also had a Mitsubishi PHEV but poor fuel economy outside of electric range, although massive boot. Now have a Tesla Y- wouldn't go back to petrol, and it has a massive boot.

Why not plug in?

Just that the infrastructure isn’t there yet for plug ins
it seems to me. I’d rather have a self charging.

Edited

But you said most driving is around town? So you'd have enough power for the day and could charge it overnight. (I'm assuming you have a drive where you could do this - you might not!)

Yes I do but worried
about motorway driving or driving in places where there are few or no chargers. Also having to get one installed.

Fifthtimelucky · 19/10/2023 22:48

When you have a plug-in hybrid and you run out of battery the car acts like a normal hybrid by self-charging and using petrol.

Best of both worlds in my view.

Butterkist8 · 19/10/2023 22:59

We have a hybrid RAV4... we moved so much stuff from my daughter's digs to her new home. Including bookcases and tables ( bit of a squeeze and some dismantling!)

NepheliLoux · 19/10/2023 23:22

As above I think the plugin hybrids are best of both. We haven’t got a charger installed at home we just stick the cable through the letter box, it’s just got a normal three pin plug on the end. We have two different cables, one for home and one for charging out and about.

TBH we rarely if ever charge while out, we used to charge it at Tesco because it used to be free. Can understand why they charge now though, got to the point where the electric parking spots were always taken, not with people doing their shop but people reading books!

I keep scrolling past this and reading "hybrid cars with big boobs"......
