Hybrid cars with big boots

Myneedycat · 18/10/2023 12:47

Advice needed in the best hybrid car with a big boot which is economical in fuel for long motorway journeys.
I have thought about
Ford Kuga
Honda CRV
Kia Sportage
Skoda Superb

Not all of these are available in hybrid though. Currently we have a petrol car which drinks fuel.

I’ve also considered the two above. Please tell me what you find good about them assuming you own one!

We looked at these when we bought a car about 5 years ago - there's probably more available now, but at the time we found that hybrid cars sacrificed boot space because the battery has to go somewhere. Of course with a fully electric car you don't need a petrol engine so the battery goes under the bonnet and you have more boot space.

The Mitsubishi Outlander fit the bill but it's too big overall for me. I liked the Kia eNiro but the hybrid version didn't have a big enough boot for us.

We went for a petrol Skoda Octavia - so not hybrid or electric at all - but it's a very efficient engine. Our next car will be fully electric i think.

I'm a fan of Skodas as I think they're well designed; a good amount of cabin and boot space for the external dimensions, and reasonably good value. I'm pretty sure they do some electric/hybrid now. If there's a hybrid version of the Octavia I'd recommend it - the boot is huge!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 18/10/2023 13:05

Mr WhereDoes has the estate version of Toyota Auris hybrid which has a big boot. With careful packing we can get 2 large golf bags plus 2 folding electric golf trolleys.
Unfortunately that's about the only reason redeeming feature of the car

I have a Toyota Corolla hybrid it’s boot takes plenty of horse stuff. It is very economical and I like it

AnotherEmma · 18/10/2023 13:38

I think I'd test drive a Skoda Octavia iV estate, it's a plug-in hybrid with a big boot.

You can't get a PHEV version of the Superb.

SoupDragon · 18/10/2023 13:40

How big a boot do you want? I have a Kuga and I love it so far (less than a month!). It has a decent sized boot but it's difficult to judge as my old SMax had a cavernous one. It's a petrol/electric hybrid rather than the plug in version.

NotFastButFurious · 18/10/2023 13:41

I have a Honda HRV (the smaller sibling of the CRV) and one advantage of them if you need good storage space is that the base of the back seats flips up flat so you've got good space to use in the rear footwell as well as the boot. (Admittedly less useful if you need to use the back seats for kids but I use that function in mine a lot).

ErrolTheDragon · 18/10/2023 13:46

How big is big? We have 2 Corolla touring sports (I think that's what they call it) now, we liked the first one so much. Our previous 'load carrier' was a VW golf estate - a lot bigger than the hatch but not enormous to drive, the Toyotas are very similar. Excellent fuel economy.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/10/2023 13:50

We weren't impressed by plug ins available when we were looking - the extra battery adds weight which can reduce their economy and takes up space. Don't know if that balance has changed.

RigorMortisRadio · 18/10/2023 13:53

I have a Hyundai Kona but if you wanted to go bigger you could go up to the Tucson, self charging and lovely to drive and if they are anything like 'normal' Hyundai's should be super reliable too (only had it 18 months so far). I used to have a Toyota CHR(?) but it was really noisy on the motorway which the Kona isn't.

ChipAndMiss · 18/10/2023 13:57

My hybrid is a BMW 530e and has a really big boot.

Fifthtimelucky · 18/10/2023 14:14

I test drive and nearly bought a Kia Sportage recently. I really liked it. It is it iessentially the same car as the Hyundai Tucson.

In the end I decided that I no longer needed a car that size and went for the Kia Niro which is a bit smaller. It's great and if you are buying new or nearly new Kia has a 7 year warranty which I think is the best available (Hyundai is next best with 5)

I'm no expert but my understanding is that plug in hybrids (which mine is) aren't as efficient on the motorway as normal hybrids because they are having to carry the weight of the battery. I thought it was worth it though because most of my driving is more local and I can do it all on the battery.

Oblomov23 · 18/10/2023 14:16

We've had this. Dh is looking at another Mitsubishi Outlander again, because he can't find anything decent.

Toyota is 10 years now!

Fifthtimelucky · 18/10/2023 22:25

Gosh. Very impressive! I stand corrected.

Netaporter · 18/10/2023 22:46

Kia sorrento? PHEV available. Or maybe wait until the EV9 is out next year?

balltraponthecote · 19/10/2023 00:24

Mazda cx5 or CX60? We're test driving both tomorrow!

DH has got a RAV4 and loves it. It is very calming to drive. Boot size is great.

burntoutnurse · 19/10/2023 03:05

I love my rav 4 hybrid

We are strongly considering buying the Corolla touring sport - are the back seats crammed at all? The boot looks great.
