Vinted item sold as new but obviously not

There was a recent post about this but I can't find it so sorry for starting another.

Bought an item advertised as new with tags. Arrived today. The label is a safety pin type thing on the label so easily removed and replaced. Main problem is that the stench of laundry powder is so very very strong, it's very obviously been washed. Also doesn't feel new and looks slightly faded compared to the inside colour.
Seller says it's just a strong smell as it's been in the cupboard with clean clothes. I really don't believe this is true.

None of the 'didn't receive what I expected options ' fit the problem.

Has anyone had this and what did they do? I want to return it and if I have to pay postage I will. I just need the stinky item out of my house. The stench is outrageous.

Vinted are really poor on issues like this. I don’t use them anymore. Hopefully someone on here that does can help you. It’s rubbish just how many scammers there are about

Witnit1 · 17/10/2023 21:06

It wasn't very expensive but it's the principle. Also is really blooming obvious from the smell it's been washed. That's not a smell you get from something being in a cupboard. People really are so dishonest.

Is it possible it's Febreze? If it's been left untouched in a storage bag or similar for a while the seller might have sprayed it just to make it seem less stale.

But obviously if it looks faded and worn then less likely to be that.

Even if it fit one of the issues you'd probably have to pay to return it so probably not worth it for a cheap item. Just give bad feedback instead.

TheFlis · 17/10/2023 21:27

I stopped using Vinted for this kind of crap. I recently bought a ‘Very Good Condition’ sweatshirt that was described as a large ladies but when it turned up was very worn and skin tight on me (size 10) so obviously a large kids. I raised a “Significantly not as described’ case. The seller reluctantly said she would refund but it only cost me £4.50 and would have cost me nearly that to return so I gave it to a charity shop.

stonedaisy · 17/10/2023 21:28

Take it on the chin and give appropriate feedback

2welshmums · 17/10/2023 21:36

If it wasn't very expensive and it's what you wanted, I'd be grateful that it smells good, and just give appropriate feedback.

I have had some items that smell awful from Vinted. Sellers selling things that reek or cigarette smoke or damp 🤯

WellIdontknowwhattocallmyself · 17/10/2023 21:36

That happened to me and vinted sided with the seller 😡

QS90 · 17/10/2023 21:53

Tbh, I wouldn't worry about "the principle" if it's second hand and cheap. It's just someone with not a lot of money, selling something as "new" when really it's "almost new". If you like the item and will use it, why worry? Just wash it before you wear, to geg rid of smell and make hygienic. I do before I wear anything second hand (with Dettol).

bluebeardswife7 · 17/10/2023 22:31

That was me! General consensus was better than smelling of fags/b.o. But like you I felt stung. It didn't feel old but lacked the starchiness of new. I sucked it up but left salty feedback (and still feel bitter) .

Because I also don't have a lot of money and I only want to pay what the item is worth. If I want to give to charity I will, I don't need to pay extra because my seller needs it more than I do

Gymmum82 · 17/10/2023 22:35

Just wash it? I can’t imagine getting all hacked off because something smelled funny.
Ive recieved clothes that reeked of fags. I washed them. If it was cheap it’s really not a big deal

Itsalongstoryy · 17/10/2023 22:37

This obviously said new with tags so is a different story but I’ve found so many people put new without tags and then write things like ‘worn once’ in the description 🤔 the box to tick for that then would be very good, not new without tags! It’s not new once you’ve worn it!

Did you mark it as okay when it arrived? I think if you’ve already done that then you might struggle but if not you can probably get it refunded surely. I think with vinted if it’s not too expected sometimes it is the chance you take unfortunately, there are some great finds on there but also lots of people not being honest too

Itsalongstoryy · 17/10/2023 22:37

*expensive

Quitter23 · 17/10/2023 22:42

I had this recently and I raised an 'item not as described' thing instead of hitting everything is OK. The seller apologised and gave me a full refund, I didnt need to return the item. Its up to the seller if they want to refund you or request its return to refund you. Vinted are terrible if you actually need help though, the fees are a rip off for the lack of support they provide

Witnit1 · 17/10/2023 22:48

I think the smell is probably fabric conditioner. I don't use it as can't stand the strong odour but the smell hit me as soon as I opened the bag and can smell it two rooms away. Size seems off too so think it's probably been tumble dried and slightly shrunk at some pont. The point is is was priced and sold as new with tags, and I thought I was buying a new item. That's dishonest no matter what the cost is. Think some of the advice here is right about not bothering to return but leaving honest feedback. Lesson learned and I'll be more wary in future.

It's not about giving to charity, it's about not wasting your life thinking "That should have cost £2 less".

Boymum2104 · 17/10/2023 23:40

If it was listed as brand new (with or without tags) I would say this issue goes down as item significantly not as described ie. Described as brand new but isn't

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 18/10/2023 08:23

Just leave a bad review

coolkatt · 18/10/2023 09:18

tell the seller it's not new. leave appropriate feedback such as not as
described. wash the item as high a temp as u can with your own laundry detergent. twice if need be. wear it and enjoy it.

last week i bought a dress that arrived covered in cat hairs. when i looked at the pic on vinted closely i could actually see the cat hairs on the dress. and could see them on her other items too. the dress itself was fine and as described. i messaged her and said bla bla about the cat hairs.
her
reply was well that's can't be true cos her cat has died.

negative feedback left. item washed thourougly and lint rolled.

NameChangePoP · 18/10/2023 09:35

I sell a lot on Vinted, and am in a lot of the forums too. Sadly this is all too common and making things much harder for the genuine sellers out there.

If you raise a dispute as significantly not as described, the seller has 2 options: 1) Request the item is returned for a refund, and 2) Refund straight away with no return.
The genuine sellers will usually go for option 2 - and I have done this in the past if I have made a mistake.
The unscrupulous sellers rely on the fact you won't want to return the item as it will cost you and will just keep quiet. The best thing you can do in this situation is leave appropriate feedback so that others can be aware. Hopefully this deters them from doing the same in future.

Witnit1 · 18/10/2023 19:00

I looked at the 'new' label.more closely and she'd tried to remove the info but left the crucial description of an item that was not mine.
That a level of dishonesty that I'm not going to let lie easily so offered for her to pay return postage and refund or i'd leave honest feedback.
She's paying for the return and refunding.

I know it's not a big deal but i gave her the opportunity to come clean and she stuck with the lie. That's not ok.

What, as in your item was for example a black coat, and the label sent with the item was for, say a grey cardigan or something?

Witnit1 · 21/10/2023 22:37

My item was a blue t-shirt. When I looked up the description on the tag it was for a black blouse.

It's one of those shops where they have a very distinctive name for the item so easily identifiable with a Google search.

CrazyHamsterLady · 22/10/2023 00:31

I doubt you’ll be able to do a lot. I was once sent some ‘brand new with tags’ Superdry trainers. To be fair, they were clearly brand new but one of them was very discoloured E.g yellow not white. The seller demanded picture after picture and then basically called me a liar. I was like, are you blind!!?? She wouldn’t pay return postage so I kept them in the end as I knew they’d only get dirty on my holiday anyway. Vinted were no help and it kind of left a bad taste in the mouth. I kind of hope she’s reading this now as she’ll know who she is 😡
