At what age are you considered elderly

I was watching an advert for a bra. It said it was designed for seniors I am 58. Am I the target market? Just suddenly dawned on me that I'm no longer middle age as online it says 65 is considered elderly. Apparently in the 1950s 55 was thought of as old age. I know everyone I'd different. I have a friend that wanted to move into a retirement village at 47. I guess it doesn't matter as long as I'm healthy. what age do you think as elderly

Honestly, I'd say 80. But when I was younger, I'd probably have said 65. I'm 43 now; I reckon by the time I'm 80, my idea of 'elderly' will be 140.

Girlattheback · 16/10/2023 20:16

Old age is always 20 years older than your current age. So that’s 78 from your perspective.

WastingTimeOnTheInternet · 16/10/2023 20:17

I think it depends on the individual. As a sweeping statement I would say 80. But I know people in their 80s who seem ‘younger’ and some people in their early 70s who seem incredibly old.

I really think it depends on the person. My in laws seem elderly in their 60s but my mum doesn’t at all at 70.
Probably late 70s in general with 65+ being ‘old’, 45+ middle aged
18-25 young adult, 25-45 adult.

I'd say 80! Mainly because I am in my 50s and quite the opposite of being in my dotage. Parents are mid 70s and still working and volunteering.

It's wonderful that people are living longer and more healthily.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 16/10/2023 20:20

Depends who you ask. I'm 50, my teenage dd often tells me I'm elderly!

MrsRetriever · 16/10/2023 20:21

85 is my elderly age. My gran is 93 & the last few years have been difficult. But agree it depends on lifestyles - my in-laws are mid 70s and have seemed elderly for the past 20 years because they retired early/didn’t work & have a lot of medical conditions which have made them quite frail.

Retirement villages etc for people in their mid-50s seems very odd, but all of my friends of that age are too busy going to gigs and doing triathlons. I imagine that was less popular in the 1950s though.

Lighttodark · 16/10/2023 20:22

Over 60/65

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/10/2023 20:23

I'm going to say 80.

My MIL and step mother are both 76 and functioning completely normally although on a few medications. But they drive, do stairs, go on holiday abroad, don't have any help or care at all.

Lighttodark · 16/10/2023 20:22

Over 60/65

How can that be elderly when retirement age is near 68?!

Howtohandl · 16/10/2023 20:24

i would say 80+ is ‘elderly’

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/10/2023 20:24

Lol at over 60. I am 61 and just increased my working hours from 16 to 24 per week to help finance my youngest through University!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 16/10/2023 20:25

90+

RudsyFarmer · 16/10/2023 20:25

I think that really depends on the individual. For my mum it’s really only in the last year and she’s early 80s.

DumpedByText · 16/10/2023 20:26

When I was a teenager I thought 55 was ancient. I'm 54 and don't feel old at all! I think 75+ is elderly.

Maddy70 · 16/10/2023 20:27

I would think 80s

Ratfinkstinkypink · 16/10/2023 20:28

I am 60, I foster a 3 year old, I am not elderly. Yet.

Onlywords · 16/10/2023 20:28

At 47 I will have a 12 and a 9 year. I would say elderly hopefully a good few years past retirement. I think it depends on the person and their health.

camelfinger · 16/10/2023 20:31

I think 75+ is elderly. Possibly 65+ if in poor health.

Farmageddon · 16/10/2023 20:31

I would say 80+ years old.

Lighttodark · 16/10/2023 20:32

According to Nhs / WHO. You can work as an older person you know.

UncleHerbie · 16/10/2023 20:32

Lighttodark · 16/10/2023 20:22

Over 60/65

Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Emma Thompson, Tom Cruise, Michelle Pfeiffer, Demi Moore et al are elderly? Do me a favour! 😂😂😂😂😂

Comedycook · 16/10/2023 20:33

80+
Or over 75 if not physically fit and healthy

BettyfromBristol · 16/10/2023 20:34

I know a 92 year old who says he is too busy to be elderly yet. He does a lot of voluntary work, is on a couple of committees, is active in his church, goes to the gym, swims once a week, walks his neighbours dog, keeps his large garden tidy.

Elderlyness is a state of mind, not a number.

I'm in my 60s and decades away from even thinking about it.
