Not getting house from council -would you be sad about it?

Im currently in a 1 bed flat
When I got this flat It was filthy
The floor was covered in urine
Stains up the walls etc.
I've made it a home the best I can
Anyway I've been offered a 2 bed house
The house inspector came out and gave me a list of jobs
I need to repaint three ceilings because I got paint from the walls on them
I need to paint my front door outside (even tho it's about 70 years old and was a mess when I moved in)
I know it sounds stupid but I'm just so down about it
I live alone and my only other family is my dad who is 80 and I'm his carer as he has dementia
I'm only moving to be closer to him as the commute at the minute is 30 mins
Il show you pics of the floor when I moved in and il show you the paint on ceiling they are complaining about
Bare in mind when I moved in every wall was a different colour ,the ceiling was full of cigarette smoke

Because I got white ceiling paint on the grey walls

I wouldn't worry about it.

Just cut the wall/ceiling paint in with a long ruler - you can do this surprisingly fast. I always go round and do it when DH paints a room.

The front door too won't take long. I think you just need to psych yourself up, stick some music on and get on with it.

Then look forward to your new home.

MehtotheChristmasrunup · 16/10/2023 12:11

I would absolutely say something to the manager. Houses are re let as seen as the next tenants can re decoration. HA usually take up flooring as otherwise they are responsible.

Thelnebriati · 16/10/2023 12:12

MehtotheChristmasrunup is right - contact Shelter and ask them for support.

INTERNETEXPL0RER · 16/10/2023 12:13

its too late now, but you should have got the poor conditions noted on the inventory / paperwork when you moved in.

so just get these small things sorted out and look forward to your new home. You are very lucky to get a 2 bed when you live alone .

ainkipinky · 16/10/2023 12:14

I have two days to get it done before they come back
If I fail this inspection then I loose the house
I don't understand why it has to be decorated to a high standard at all

Nor do I but it does, so I really wouldn't cut your nose to spite your face.

TomatoSandwiches · 16/10/2023 12:15

So you can have the 2 bed but you have to do these works to your current property first or have they said no to the 2 bed house outright?
Could you send them the pictures so they can see how bad it was when you moved in?

CobwebsAndCauldrons · 16/10/2023 12:18

I honestly wouldn't waste time showing them photos or venting about this. Just get it done and see it as a necessary step to get the 2 bed house.

It sounds daft for them to ask this of you, but that work can be done in 2 days (it could be done in an afternoon) and then you get to move on and live in a house that will - hopefully! - be a lovely home for you.

ainkipinky · 16/10/2023 12:19

Yeah I'm going too
I've grabbed some masking tape and I have the paint left in the cupboard
I do also need to paint skirting boards white but that shouldn't really take long at all

Unless the ceiling is badly weathered/discoloured, you don't need to fully repaint the ceilings, just paint the edges/corners where you've got the wall paint on the ceiling. Even if it's badly discoloured, painting an entire ceiling isn't really a long job - an hour or two at most - just be more careful and don't get the ceiling paint on the walls around the edges/corners, or you'll end up having to do the walls again too!

Rather than be down/sad about it, just get the paint and a couple of brushes and get on with it. You'll feel better when you're actually doing something about it rather than just ruminating about it which achieves nothing.

ainkipinky · 16/10/2023 12:19

@TomatoSandwiches no if I complete these works I can have the house but it has to be done in two days

@user1497207191 yeah I know I'm going to get a grip
Lack of sleep over the last week has turned me into a emotional wreck
Gonna have a cuppa and crack on

Gonna have a cuppa and crack on

Good for you!

Fingers crossed it all goes well and this all just becomes a memory while you are cosied up in your new house.

GoFaster83 · 16/10/2023 12:24

Good luck op! You can do it!

MrsSlocombesCat · 16/10/2023 12:37

Good luck OP, it won’t be that hard and will be totally worth it.

Nowherenew · 16/10/2023 12:49

Well done for taking photos when you first moved in!

It’s very unfair you have to do these things when it was such a state when you moved in but it’s only painting and if it means getting the house that’s more suitable then it’s a no brainer.

Take before and after photos in case they try and say anything.

Please keep us updated!
This is really exciting news!

I dont understand the relevance between your post title and the content Confused

You've been offered a house that is bigger than your needs, and have been asked to spend a couple of hours bringing your current property up to the requested condition. How is that "not being given a council house"?

PatchouliOilandRoses · 16/10/2023 13:12

Can I kindly suggest you get off mn and start painting.....you are getting what you want if you do a bit of work on this property.
You can navel gaze about how unfair it may or may not be when you have moved into your two bed house!

This.

Title has no relevance to the post. You're getting a council house and all you have to do is a simple, quick task.

ThornInMySide84 · 16/10/2023 13:26

Why does a single person deserve a 2 bedroom flat anyway from the council?

bonzaitree · 16/10/2023 13:26

Put on your big girl pants and crack the fuck on OP.

Yes there are hoops but think about the end goal. Get some music blasting. You can do it!

ainkipinky · 16/10/2023 13:31

@ThornInMySide84 deserve ? It's a bidding system
I've been on the list 10 years now
If there's a 2 bed (1 person -3 person ) then I'm entitled to bid on it

OP posts:
Yocal · 16/10/2023 13:35

Don't take the bait OP. If you are within the rules that's that.

I'd not respond to any other person talking about politics as it's just going to distract you from your task in hand - that paintbrush!
