Halal party food

PartnersInCrime · 14/10/2023 18:59

Having a little get together over half term for DC and a couple of friends. One new friend who we've not hosted before - dietary requirement Halal.

Was going to serve some cakes and then pizza for tea - home made dough & sauce and mozzarella. If I avoid meat/pork, alcohol and sweets like marshmallows that may contain gelatin, is there anything else I need to consider?

TIA

Hi I think you should be OK with what you've already said. Keep it veggie no alcohol and avoid gelatine.

Have fun!! 💕

gotomomo · 14/10/2023 21:46

Veggie, no alcohol, you can get halal haribo in larger supermarkets eg asda in the world foods aisle

PabloandGustheGreySquirrels · 14/10/2023 21:49

I would categorically refuse! Halal is so cruel and against my beliefs. Just go for veggie stuff that doesn’t need to be halal certified

Do you know how most animals are slaughtered?

Erm, veggie stuff IS halal.

fedupandstuck · 14/10/2023 21:59

95% of animals that are slaughtered under halal rules are pre-stunned just as with non-halal slaughter. And either way, the animal is killed, and animals are distressed in slaughter houses before they are stunned. And stunning isn't exactly pleasant either. So if you eat meat at all, to object to halal meat is just a bit, well odd would be a pleasant interpretation.

Any anyway, the OP has already said they will avoid meat! So there was no need for the complaint about halal slaughter, was there?

Pewpewbarneymcgrew · 14/10/2023 22:00

@PabloandGustheGreySquirrels Fresh air and water are halal, better avoid those too

Snugglewuggle25 · 14/10/2023 22:00

Nobody was asking about your beliefs. She was asking if she should avoid anything else as she is being kind enough to cater for her friends needs.

GiveMeCakeOrGiveMeDeath · 14/10/2023 22:01

Just go veggie. Not sure why alcohol would be involved with a kids party! Get chocolate instead of sweets if you aren't sure but loads of sweets come without gelatine these days you just need to check.

I don't think she was proposing to go and buy halal meat, just checking if going veggie was ok...

Did anyone even ask you?

Nookable · 14/10/2023 22:03

Some Muslims will avoid things like vanilla extract and white wine vinegar because of the alcohol.
I think it's only very strict ones but may be worth checking

Hermittrismegistus · 14/10/2023 22:06

Just serve vegetarian food.

If the children do accidentally eat something that isn't halal it isn't really an issue as it's an accident anyway.

Invisimamma · 14/10/2023 22:07

You'll be fine with veggie food and no geletine.

The haribo mini strawbs are halal. Recently did halal friendly party bags for my son's party. You can also buy huge bags of halal pick and mix on tiktok shop really cheaply.

PartnersInCrime · 15/10/2023 06:59

Yes I was thinking of vanilla essence etc - not serving 11 year olds beer. Thanks for the input almost everyone.

OP, apart from the pork and alcohol aspect of things, Halal also means that any animal protein served should have been slaughtered according to Islamic rites.

Also, the vanilla essence and vinegar. They’re available in all of the supermarkets where I live in the Middle East so I think you’d be ok with them.

madeinmanc · 15/10/2023 07:06

Essences and some colourings are not halal, they have as much alcohol as some spirits as a percentage of the product. It's not just strict Muslims that avoid them.

Tartareistasty · 15/10/2023 07:07

Asda often has halal section. Some of the salami would be great on pizza.

Yes but they are without alcohol in ME. Different to standard vanilla essence you buy in UK.
Same like mouthwashes.

You can buy alcohol free vanilla essence in most turkish etc shops in UK

Halal doesn't mean what you think it does. Vegetables are Halal.

madeinmanc · 15/10/2023 07:13

@PabloandGustheGreySquirrels "Halal" is an Arabic word meaning "legal" or "permitted" and refers to all kinds of things, so it sounds like you're saying "I'm against legal/permitted things".

PenelopeTheShroudWeaver · 15/10/2023 07:19

I would check with your friend OP, what you describe sounds fine and my (Muslim) DF and his side of the family would be happy with that, but they're not particularly strict beyond the no pork / no alcohol rules

You obviously don't know what Halal means?

So you base your socialisation based purely on your opinion? The OP ASKED these guests to her home - she's then supposed to force feed them stuff they don't want to eat or provide only stuff they can't eat? Are you only against Halal, or are you a hypocrite that eats meat but can think of excuses to turn a blind eye to other slaughtering practices so that you can have your bacon butty?

Baffled1989 · 15/10/2023 07:31

It’s the exact opposite. What do you think Halal is??
