I want to do something to help Jewish people in the UK.

Can anyone recommend a good Jewish charity please?

Wtf @paperflowers55 are you Jewish? Why are you telling people not to give to charity?

Thank you @MyLittleBluePhone , that's a very kind thought and means a lot.

Two very good charities are Magen David Adom
https://mdauk.org/
And united hatzalah

Also the disabled veterans fund

BlurredEdges I have been reading a lot of your posts on various threads, and they are very interesting and informative. I am not Jewish, but I have felt so moved by recent events that I have contacted my local synagogue and asked to learn more about Judaism. Thank you 🌷

Thank you so much. That really means a lot. I've been contacted by about six of my close non-Jewish friends this week to check in on me, and every single one of those means so much. I think the history of being Jewish is the history of feeling like no one else gives a damn about us (I mean I'm married to a non-Jew so I know this isn't strictly true, but it can feel like it sometimes) and the messages of kindness, sympathy and generosity in the last week have been the only thing getting me through, tbh.

I am happy to advise on different types of shuls (synagogues) and different denominations of Judaism - they are very, very different from each other and not all will be equally welcoming to someone wanting to learn more. But many will be. So please let me know if you'd like more info (maybe on a different thread)

Yachad and children of peace both support a diplomatic solution and money goes to support Palestinian children. Solutions not Sides seeks to eliminate Islamophobia and anti-semetism.

Chiaseedling · 13/10/2023 18:18

What type of charity would you like to support?

Thank you for the links, I had been wondering where would be best to donate to ❤️

(horrified by the ‘oh don’t bother they all help each other’ comment. And the offering link to donations for others is equally unhelpful. The op asked for a link to Jewish charities. Would you keep giving links to men’s charities if someone wanted to donate to a women’s charity?)

Thanks, Solutions not Sides looks like an interesting charity and one I haven't heard of before, but there are some good people involved with that and some good principles.

In terms of interfaith charities, Nisa-Nashim is a network of Jewish and Muslim women in business in the UK. https://www.nisanashim.com/

At the moment, I feel like we are in more of a crisis situation and personally i'm donating to charities that deal with emergency response. But if/when things become calmer again, these are worthwhile initiatives.

@BlurredEdges is it ok to PM you?

ChienneDesFromages · 13/10/2023 19:50

BlurredEdges I’ve also found your post this week helpful and informative. Thank you.

My granny was a Lithuanian Jewish immigrant to England. She married out and was wholly secular, but I remember her well and we hope to visit some of the places her family came from with our children. Our closest friends are Masorti and SIL is a liberal Rabbi in the US (BIL converted.)

I can’t bear the thought that, 85 years after my grandma came here, people think Jewish people still don’t quite belong. She always felt the need to hide who she was and this is the first time I’ve really understood why.

It is so lovely that people are looking for ways to show support and solidarity through charitable giving. I’ve checked in on our Jewish loved ones (including DD’s friend in Jaffa) and they are understandably really struggling at the moment.

Ibizafun · 13/10/2023 19:53

Yes Magen David Adom and United Hatzalah, two incredible ambulance services. I've donated thick socks, tampax, toothbrushes/paste, deodorant etc to the kids fighting in the south but I understand supplies also needed in the north as they are bracing themselves for an attack from Hezbollah...

LaBohemia · 13/10/2023 20:00

Another good one is Jewish Care Trust based in Stepney.

MyLittleBluePhone · 13/10/2023 20:06

Thank you for all the responses. I don't know which charity but I want to make a gesture and show solidarity. If there is a charity that particularly helps women and children that would also be great.

Would it be wholly inappropriate to visit a local synagogue? If not, what could we bring or do to show support or help? Please tell and excuse if this is a ridiculous idea.

I’ve donated to Magen David Adom and sent cards to my local synagogues.

soddingspiderseason · 13/10/2023 20:28

Hi, this isn't about charities, but tonight people are lighting candles - #LightForIsrael - to show support. I'm not Jewish, but have been horrified and heartbroken about what's happened. One of my Jewish friends mentioned this and I've put a candle in my front window as a small sign of support. Just thought of mention it in case any other posters would like to do the same.

Greenshake · 13/10/2023 20:40

@soddingspiderseason I will do the same.

There's a list of official charities here - and a little about each one. There's a few for women and children.

And thank you for your support.

If you're not specifically looking to donate to Israel, but just to Jewish charities, then JWA (Jewish women's aid) is a very well established and worthwhile charity that does loads of good work in the UK. It is for victims of domestic violence

If you are looking for a charity that helps women and girls in Israel , I will get back to you ASAP. A friend sent me a list of Israel charities yesterday which I can go and check.

When all hope was lost, JWA was there This new year, help us to support more women like Ariella, Sarah and Rachel. Click  here to find out more about Sarah, Rachel and Ariella whose stories have been featured in our Rosh Hashana appeal.

@MyLittleBluePhone I would not visit a local synagogue now, sorry. Security is extremely high and you may not be allowed in.

Thank you. I visited the Polish towns and villages that some of my ancestors came from a few years ago. I have a lot of tips and advice I can share if that's something you want to pursue.

I know many families like yours where people hid their Jewishness even from their close relatives. If she was your maternal grandmother, then you would be considered halachically Jewish (it gets more complicated with the United synagogue in terms of marriage etc)

Thank you for checking In with your Jewish loved ones. I am sure it would be deeply appreciated.

I was also raised in a masorti congregation- are you in North London?

Wonderful charities shared here, am Yisrael Chai ❤️
Not a charity as such but StandWithUs are worth looking at too https://www.standwithus.com/

Remember the majority of anti-Zionism is anti-semitism and had modern day Irael

I thought this too! I’ve bought my Yellow candle from Yom HaShoah this evening and placed it in my window. They’re worth ordering for 2024 too.

Is there any reason you want to specifically donate to Jewish charities (especially given the death toll of Palestinians is far more)? Israel is getting huge amounts of aid and yet all supplies, power and even water has been cut off from Gaza. Feels like you believe certain lives are more worthy?
