Is this a scam?

Screenshot below, I've had three scammers so far in last two hours so I don't know if I'm being overcautious and losing patience, it's a £300 item (hobby furniture, bought for 900 this year but probably an average price for what it is - listing stated open to offers also. Usually when I state cash on collection only they stop messaging. Profile says they've got 300 friends but can't see location or anything as different language.

If I'm shutting down PayPal/Bacs what's his angle if it's a scam??

He will be wanting to pay you online somehow, and you wont see that money.

MustDust · 13/10/2023 13:59

I'd ask if his son was bringing the cash I think and see what the reply is.

dementedpixie · 13/10/2023 14:05

It's a funny way to word a message. Ask if the son will bring the money. If not, say no.

Definitely a scam! I had this, said his son would be picking it up and asked for my address. I did not confirm all of my address. Then he wanted my PayPal email address so he could pay for the item. Then told me he had paid for it and to check my emails. I had an email from a fake PayPal email saying my money was being held as it wasn't a business account. If you google it it's a common scam.

CesareBorgia · 13/10/2023 14:30

Use of 'kindly' in such a message = scam.

amicissimma · 13/10/2023 14:33

What happens if you re-state 'I require cash on collection', so please give the cash whoever is collecting'?

If that's not possible, I'd say the deal is off.

Gro · 13/10/2023 14:39

Probably a scam. I would put "I don't mind who collects it as long as they have the cash" and see what they say.

Unicorn2022 · 13/10/2023 14:46

When I sell anything cash on collection I'll give the road name and postcode and say that I'll give them the house number when they phone or text me on arrival in the road. If I don't want to tell them my house number sometimes I'll ask what car they are in and walk the item to the car.

Soubriquet · 13/10/2023 14:47

As long as it’s still cash upon pick up, then I would go ahead

Cas112 · 13/10/2023 14:47

Say son will need to bring cash and await a response

Circleontheright · 13/10/2023 14:55

Update... definitely thinking scam, didn't give him the house number but he's probably not anywhere near here anyway.

Yes a scam if they wanted it they would pay cash. And he's ignored your statement of cash on collection. I'd block and ignore

CesareBorgia · 13/10/2023 15:05

This is dancing round the room with 'I'm a scam' tattooed on its forehead to the tune of 'scammy days are here again'.

Circleontheright · 13/10/2023 15:06

😂😂 cannot believe how many scammers there are out there! How can a bank transfer be a scam though?? I just don't get how they can fake that?

100% scam. Can’t even write in English and bank transfer is a classic scammer tactic. Just continue to say it’s cash only and they’ll soon disappear

Because they have hacked into some other poor sod's bank account and will use that account to pay you. They then collect the goods from you immediately the transaction shows in your bank account, and before the bank's fraud team can take the money back again.

Just re-iterate: cash on collection only.

Overpayment scam.

They will say they have accidentally transferred too much, or transferred an extra amount to pay for the son's petrol, and you've to bank transfer the 'overpayment' back to them or give cash to the 'son' in the less likely event he comes to your door.

Either they will send you false receipts and not transfer any money at all, or the transfer will be fraudulent and reclaimed by the bank, either way leaving you out of pocket by the amount you've "paid back" to them.

Purpledaisies4 · 13/10/2023 15:34

I've had similar this morning. Selling my husbands smart watch for £100, absolutely nothing wrong with it hes just got a new one, within minutes I had some guy in London asking where was my location (it was in the advert 🤦‍♀️) so I told him and he said his sister lives near to collect & he'd send the money via PayPal, I told him it would have to be friends & family as I'm not paying the PayPal fees or cash on collection, he then asks about bank transfer, told him I'm not giving out bank details to strangers & again it was PayPal f&f or cash on collection, funnily enough I've not heard anything back so guess he was trying to scam claiming though PayPal or his bank he never received the watch/ it didn't work, unfortunately for him I was one step ahead of him 😁

gettingolderbutcooler · 13/10/2023 15:41

I have to say that I've bought an item and paid on the doorstep with a bank transfer!

Alwayswonderedwhy · 13/10/2023 15:47

Could be a scam but not everyone that wants to pay by PayPal or bank transfer is a scammer.
I would always ask to transfer rather than go and get cash out.

The difference is that you were there in person. Its unlikely that anyone will turn up to the OP once the whole bank transfer story has played out.

But I'm guessing if the buyer insisted on cash, you wouldn't keep asking and completely ignore this.

grayhairdontcare · 13/10/2023 17:43

Tell him to transfer the money to his son so his son can get the cash out for collecting the item

CesareBorgia · 13/10/2023 18:08

OP shouldn't waste any more time on this. Block and move on.

Tsiagisel · 13/10/2023 18:23

Yes! I sold a pram and travel system
on FB marketplace this month and had this in droves. Just use the word “scam”
or “scammer” and they scarper!

EG - “thanks for getting in touch, I’ve had a lot of scammers message me! ”

bam. They left the chat.
