Is this a scam?

Screenshot below, I've had three scammers so far in last two hours so I don't know if I'm being overcautious and losing patience, it's a £300 item (hobby furniture, bought for 900 this year but probably an average price for what it is - listing stated open to offers also. Usually when I state cash on collection only they stop messaging. Profile says they've got 300 friends but can't see location or anything as different language.

If I'm shutting down PayPal/Bacs what's his angle if it's a scam??

Is this a scam?

Thanks for the info, it can be quite confusing and I'm only in my 30s, lots of older folk in my family I could see falling for this ☹️

Honestly had the same lines all day... soon as you reiterate cash on collection they leave 😂

Yes definitely a scam! I have had a few wanting to send a courier round to pick the item up and one time I called out the scam and they sent me a picture of them sticking their middle finger up ( they looked nothing like the elderly lady in their profile pic!)

Tell him to PayPal his son and he can pay it in cash and see what excuse he comes up with.

Could be a scam but not everyone that wants to pay by PayPal or bank transfer is a scammer.
I would always ask to transfer rather than go and get cash out.

This is the third time I've seen this today alone. It's a scam.

It just seems it's a waste of time trying to sell online these days I think.

I was the target of a What's App scam yesterday. I'm too old to know how to do screen prints - sorry. It went like this.

Hi Mum, my phone has broke. I have a new number to use - 078nnnnnnnn.

Mum, can I ask you a question?

(To which I reply, sure but which daughter is this?)

Your oldest. (That was a good response realising that I had indicated more than one, but avoiding giving their name)

Are you busy?

My bank have suspended my account for 48 hours while my new phone is registered. Would you make a payment for me?

(Sure)

It's quite large. £3900.

(Call me with the details)

I can't. I'm on the phone with the bank now. I'm getting quite stressed.

(At this point I still think it's my daughter. But that's a large sum and I can't think who she'd have to pay that to so urgently. So, tell me the name of our first cat?)

Mum? Really? I'm really stressed out now.

(At this point I call my daughter's "old" number and she replies. Now I know they were trying to scam me)

======
Please don't be caught out. They are really clever.

While we're on. Scammers are clagging QR codes to parking meters ATM. I probably wouldn't use the QR code even if you're convinced it's legit to pay for parking.

gamerchick · 23/11/2023 08:52

Although you could argue that paying for parking is an old scam in itself.

Oh wow, thanks for this @gamerchick. It's one I didn't know about.
It's so hard to keep in top of all these scams 😖

Yes. He writes in a weird way.

To the WhatsApp scammers:
'Hi daughter, no problem at all - 300 million quid on it's way to you immediately.
What's our password?' 😀
