Reluctant to spend the winter in front of the TV

Dawned on me this evening that the weather has definitely changed and I get so bored just being sat in front of the TV all evening. I'm single and have very few friends.
What else do people do in dark cold evenings? I want to try and get back into reading but I find it very hard to focus.

I'm wondering this too op.

YewandOak · 12/10/2023 21:18

I read, watch dvds, potter about on my pc researching local history, local lore, and join in on a forum or two. Always seems to be enough for me to not get bored. Love the darker evenings.

Cats234 · 12/10/2023 21:19

@YewandOak what's local lore?

OP posts:
persisted · 12/10/2023 21:19

Gym classes, swimming.
Maybe this will be the year I teach myself crochet, have knitted before but that didn't stick.
Is there a local book group? Might help with the focus to make it more social.

Butterkist8 · 12/10/2023 21:20

Take up painting, crochet, macrame, felting, sewing, embroidery, tapestry, cabinetry, wood turning , patchwork, reading, sketching, music...

Ifailed · 12/10/2023 21:21

books, lots of them. If you are lucky and have a library local, start ordering them up.

I buy a new cookery book every winter and work my way through it trying new things

IDidntKnowMyOwnStrength · 12/10/2023 21:25

I am single, l quite like the winter evenings, in the warmer lighter seasons l potter outdoors in the garden mostly, or go for a walk, so it makes a nice change to be indoors. I don't have a tv, haven't had one for years and don't miss it. I browse online, l like doing crafts, listen to music, watch stuff l am interested in on youtube such as DIY and decorating as l am trying to slowly improve my home on a budget.

I'd really recommend a gym. You'll meet people and be active. It's great.

Greydogs123 · 12/10/2023 21:28

There’s free courses on the Open University, you could choose a few of those to work through. I’ve joined a skittles team which gets me out of the house once a week in the evening.

@YewandOak what's local lore?

Local legends and stories

Pieceofpurplesky · 12/10/2023 21:32

Single here and most friends busy with families. DS at university.
I work 11 hour days 5 days a week so when I get home I am knackered.
I love the winter nights. Candles. Books. Cooking different foods. BOx sets. I write and journal. An excuse to not go for a walk (it's dark and I am alone). Weekends of fresh air and visiting places and friends.
I do get lonely but more so in the summer

Octavia64 · 12/10/2023 21:33

Get some kittens and watch them being batshit crazy, hours of fun and they will sit and watch tv with you.

PinkBuffalo · 12/10/2023 21:33

I go to gym classes every week night after work. It is a proper release from my awful job and I love the peoples there as well we all get on amazingly well

also go weekend mornings. I am also single and extremely lonely and this gets me out the house and I love my gym family

another benefit in the winter is a tough work out gets you hot

choccytime · 12/10/2023 21:56

I am knitting myself a fair isle jumper , its going well but I havent got to the fair isle bit yet so when I do if it doesnt go to plan I may end up pulling it all out and the dog will get a new jumper instead . Am also thinking of getting a months subscription to Ancestry and looking up some long lost relatives

Cicciabella · 12/10/2023 22:02

OnlyTheBravest · 12/10/2023 22:11

I love the colder nights. Fab time to try out different creative arts.
Lego kits, origami, scrap booking, crochet, puzzles/logical puzzles, online gaming, genealogy, reading, researching, baking/new recipes, dress making.

Do you have a local hobbycraft? They do workshops now. Great to get going on a new craft.

BigDahliaFan · 12/10/2023 22:13

The same as I do in the summer……run, walk, gym, swim, housework, cooking and life admin!

LilyHarris · 12/10/2023 22:21

Crochet! I took it up this time last year but fell away from it in the summer. I've decided it's a winter hobby and I'm going to get started on a new project soon.

BettyBallerina · 12/10/2023 22:24

Cross stitch.

aanniebell · 12/10/2023 22:25

I run in winter still. It's my favourite time of year for running, as I overheat easily.

I'm also looking for a gym but the classes must be right (as I do a lot of those ad hoc) and it must have a pool and sauna.

I also like theatre at this time of year, the atmosphere, and I have have hobbies and a couple of reading groups.

There's so much you could be doing!

EmpressaurusOfCats · 12/10/2023 22:28

Crochet, jigsaws, out one evening at yoga class, out another evening at Italian class, then we sometimes go for pizza after.
