What is your teen’s bedroom like? (I don’t mean how tidy)

I have a 16 year old dd who has grown out of their bedroom as in it has been the same for seven years since we moved in.

They need all new furniture including a new bed which they have literally grown out of (she is tall!) It also needs decorating.

If there was space I would like to do a proper teen’s hangout with a tall sleeper bed and desk and gaming area but it’s a really small space so it will have to be traditional.

I was wondering if most teens have a normal bedroom set up eg single bed, bedside table, wardrobe, or is it done up for a teenager and to their taste in their chosen colours etc.

Any tips or ideas on where to start?

We were fortunate to have the space to do a loft conversion and so by my DD's have rooms up there. They have a double bed bedside table and chest of drawers. Recently got them second hand desk/dressing tables.
The furniture is ikea stuff or from FB marketplace.
They did get to choose the paint and new bedding and they have cushions on the beds from birthday money etc.
They have stuck posters and things up to their own taste.
I don't think it matters if there is only space for a single bed etc if you give them choice to have new colour paint/bedding/rug make it a bit more grown up.
They spend a lot of time in their rooms and love cozying up in there.

DS has a good sized double room. So he’s got a double bed, bedside table, wardrobe and a bookcase. He chose the furniture, curtains, rug and wall colour. And his bed sheets too.

He uses my desk to do homework (I WFH all the time so I have a dedicated space) and does any video gaming downstairs.

Theres no right or wrong way to do it. Maybe set a budget for it and let your DS choose what he’d like.

If you’ve got a 16 year old I reckon they’ll have some pretty strong opinions on it? Hand them a budget and get them to plan it.

Does she want it? I assumed my dd would and she adamant she doesn't.

ShowOfHands · 12/10/2023 20:08

16yr old DD doesn't have a bedroom. It's a library with a double bed in it! Three walls of book shelves and a secret door in one of them into a walk in closet. She likes art so has designed and decorated her room herself. She has a desk, easel and armchair as well. It's pretty individual to her. She's currently designing a night sky ceiling to paint in there

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/10/2023 20:11

I don’t know any older teens who would want a tall sleeper bed.

Doubles are favourite but only 1 of ours has a bedroom big enough for that. They both have ikea malm ottoman beds which are fabulous for storage and pax wardrobes. They both have desks and a chest of drawers. The wall colours and soft furnishings were their choice and can be changed more easily than the furniture.

ask your dd what she’d like and go shopping together for some ideas

ThreeLeggedKitten · 12/10/2023 20:12

double bed if possible

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/10/2023 20:15

A teen definitely won't want a tall sleeper, if enough space than a double bed if not a single bed.

Then take their lead on how to decorate it and take them to ikea!

Landlubber2019 · 12/10/2023 20:16

Small double bed, mahogany furniture, gaming pc all chosen by dc at 14. Not my choice but it does look lovely

shamelesss · 12/10/2023 20:18

I’d ask her, despite what others have said my teen dc is desperate for a high sleeper so that he can get a desk in his room but he’s too long for most of them!

Hellocatshome · 12/10/2023 20:19

My teen loves his tall sleeper but then he has a box room so if he had a single bed in there he wouldn't have room for his tv/xbox etc as jt is his wardrobe is on the landing. So I'm not sure how OP says she can't have a tall sleeper because of space because if there is no toom for a tall sleeper that means there is room for a single bed and nothing else really.

Having said that if there is room then 100% a double bed or a single day bed thing from IKEA

CowboyJoanna · 12/10/2023 20:20

DD13 has an average sized bedroom. She has a single bed, a desk with her laptop and Ipad on next to it, double wardrobe across from the bed, a freestanding book cabinet and loads of posters and bluetack.

We can't really hang stuff on the walls because the house is a newbuild with shoddy plastering and the walls are too crumbly. Didn't realise this until we bought it ffsAngry

Caswallonthefox · 12/10/2023 20:21

My ds has 2 rooms in the roof space. He uses the seating area as storage space at the moment. As with most teens, has bedroom is his living space.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 12/10/2023 20:28

Standard single beds, wardrobe etc. Ds2 chose a very long desk.
DS1 has the box room so has what will fit. It’s a day bed with storage headboard so he uses it for lounging. He had a high sleeper years ago, they really don’t work for teens. Makes rooms feel small and dark IMO, he hated it and so did I.

shamelesss · 12/10/2023 20:37

Which tall sleeper does your teen have? If you don’t mind sharing

BerriesNutsConkers · 12/10/2023 20:37

DD has a tall sleeper bed with a desk underneath, she also has space for a double sofa bed that can be opened out but there isn't room to leave it up long term! She also had a huge wardrobe and bookcases

KeepForgetting · 12/10/2023 21:36

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking of a small double bed and I will have a look at ikea furniture. She doesn’t have strong opinions on what she wants although she doesn’t like anything girly. It needs to be more practical than anything and work space wise.

your daughter 16 and will soon be old enough to go clubbing! she wont want to be clambering up a ladder to go to bed at 4am! beds tend to all be 6ft 3 long so if that is nearly her height then go for a divan without a baseboard. drawers under bed. go to ikea and let her choose a couple of tall sets of drawers for all her clothes and a matching wardrobe if needed. paint it the colour she wants but if room is small it will look bigger if in a pale colour.

Marblessolveeverything · 12/10/2023 22:07

My teen has double bed which lifts up for storage. Armchair, one wall is kallax and bookcases, desk and humongous beanbag sofa thing. Built in wardrobes hide the clutter.

I went for double as I figured it was a false economy to buy a single.

SpiritedSneeze · 12/10/2023 22:24

My daughter's is very much decorated how she likes it- it always has been and this just morphed as she got older.
She likes to paint on the walls. Currently she has a swirly peach wall and a big painted vine by the door that she adds flowers to. She also has a blue tac'd photo wall.

The furniture is basic, a wooden double bed and chest of drawers and a hanging rail for clothes. She used to have a desk but we sold it as it was never used. And the space is now full with a huge cheese plant.

Zola1 · 12/10/2023 22:39

Mine has a double bed (grey, high fabric headboard), fitted double wardrobe with mirrored doors, some kallax units, the tall Alex unit, her chest of drawers etc are inside her wardrobe. Then she has a corner dressing table with a 3 panel Hollywood mirror, and a TV on the wall. It's just white with grey wooden flooring and one wall is grey panelling.

TheChosenTwo · 12/10/2023 22:44

We put bedrooms in the loft when the dds were 11 and 12 and they both went up there. They both have small doubles, desks, bedside tables and built in wardrobes. Because one of them has the old chimney stack in their rooms we had to be creative about the space and shelving but they’re nice rooms if not especially big. There’s room in each for a double airbed on the floor (which takes up pretty much the remaining floor space!) for sleepovers.
They are both painted neutrally but each one has stuck posters, wall hangings, tapsetry things, photos etc up. One has a wall of guitars!
both very different styles but it’s evolved over the years they’ve been in them.
The eldest is at uni most of the time and if I’ve ever had to sleep up there (dh snoring!) I always think how peaceful it is up there and silently fume that they got to be up in the loft instead of dh and I 😂😂

FetchezLaVache · 12/10/2023 22:46

I want @ShowOfHands' DD's bedroom!!!!

DS (13) has a big room, so he has a double bed, desk for his gaming PC, bookcases, chest of drawers, walk-in closet and window seat. I think given the choice, he would have loved a tall sleeper, but I was concerned he'd grow out of the concept fairly quickly, as all my DNs did. He wanted the décor to be a surprise, but his tastes are fairly straightforward so it wasn't hard to please him, but at 16 I'd expect your DD to want to choose everything herself!

piscofrisco · 13/10/2023 10:32

Both DD's are lucky enough to have double rooms so they each have a doubled bed, chest of drawers, bedside tables, wardrobe and desk/dressing table.dd1 has more wardrobes (her stuff is all ikea), dd2 wanted a little armchair instead (her stuff came from Dunelm I think)

HashBrownandBeans · 13/10/2023 10:51

My teens all have doubles and have for a long time, since about 13. Boys rooms are grey with black accessories, girls is blue with neon lights everywhere.
