Why are the trees still covered in leaves?

I noticed when I was driving home tonight that the trees still look like it's summer, full of green leaves. They should be red/brown and falling by now. Is this because of climate change? What is the science behind this?

You do realize that climate change has been happening for as long as your 'anecdata' goes back don't you? I've been acutely aware of it for around 45 years

Are you in complete denial or just haven't twigged that the climate crisis didn't start last year?

Actually, I think the post you quoted doesn't necessarily deny climate change- it just questions people thinking they can 'spot it' with every bit of weather.
I actually agree, and for MH reasons I try and keep my climate change terror separate in my mind to enjoying nature and changing seasons.

I always thought it was frost which triggered leaf fall.

I am in East Lancashire and trees here have most of their leaves; but we had the first frost on Friday night so I am expecting the leaves to change and drop soon. Over the border in Yorkshire the autumn colours are in full swing.

We went to Winkworth Arboretum around this time last year and we’d missed the autumn colour really. The leaves had changed and dropped weeks or months earlier.

in the New Forest this weekend everything was still very much green.

Last year was disquietingly early.

This year is possibly bit late for there to be no signs of the leaves changing yet but still within the range if what I consider normal.

Climate change is real though.

Because it's been mild.

I've noticed little changes around the start of August and some leaves actually start falling then I wonder if the seasons are slowly starting earlier and later ?

I believe there is an increase in sea temp levels so I wouldn't say climate change isn't a thing. Having said that though I don't think we are in richer countries will be doomed we will find ways to adapt . It's the developing countries I worry about, especially those at risk of flash flooding.

And why do you think sea temperatures are rising? Nothing to do with climate change of course 🤦‍♀️. Climate change will affect everyone; rich countries will be overrun by climate refugees, food will become much more expense (as harder to grow), parts of Wales and Norfolk will be underwater.

Totally agree, the denial is so perplexing

After one or two much colder nights recently, I noticed the other day while driving from SW London to Oxford, that the leaves of trees en route had certainly started changing colour - which they hadn’t a week previously.

OTOH we have a large beech tree in our garden which is showing no signs at at all yet, but we’re fairly sheltered here.

DSis in Yorkshire Dales said a couple of weeks ago that a lot of leaves were already falling.

Treaclewell · 18/10/2023 09:56

Yesterday's wind has stirred a few leaves, but most still on, and green. Apart from a maple sp. I have been watching from my bedroom, which is half ginger, its side facing SE, and has been for a coule of weeks. Various conker trees have changed, but they have a disease.

SurvivingCPTSD · 18/10/2023 13:56

Mostly still green here but since the cold weather kicked in a few days ago I have seen some trees turning orange and gold.

verdantverdure · 20/10/2023 20:55

I can report that Winkworth Arboretum is still green.
