Lyme Regis in rain?!

Limesandlemons1 · 09/10/2023 23:04

I’ve booked a lovely few days away in Lyme Regis later this week but the forecast is pretty solid rain…

Can anyone recommend any rainy day activities for two adults please?! We have a car so can go a little bit further afield. Maybe a spa!

Thank you

We enjoyed the dinosaur museum in the rain!.
There's also the town bakery/mill which does tours (or did a few years ago) and lets you sample different types of bread - I don't recommend the spelt bread. Even the dog didn't like it 😄

There are several little galleries if you don't mind darting in and out of the rain.
Have a good day!

Drive to Bridport, nice shops and little museum - market on a Wednesday

Town museum is worth a half hour.

Worldgonecrazy · 10/10/2023 09:26

Take an umbrella and go for a walk around Langham Woods in the rain. Beautiful!

Go to the Town Mill Bakery on Coombe Street, Lyme for breakfast. Their sourdough granary is a gold medal winning bread, it freezes well too if you want to take some home.

Have a coffee or ice cream at Baboo by the bus stop in Lyme, you can sit by the window and watch the world go by.

Bridport museum will take less than an hour. The market doesn’t always have the full cohort of stalls if the weather is bad. Soulshine has great food if you want somewhere to shelter.

If it’s raining we normally just carry on as usual and take a brolly and dress appropriately.

Worldgonecrazy · 10/10/2023 09:28

NB to avoid confusion, the Town Mill Bakery is not the same place as the Town Mill, though they are very close in location. You can definitely eat ALL of the bread at the Town Mill Bakery (and all of the cakes, and the sweetcorn fritters are amazing!)

Go to Charmouth and hunt for fossils. There's also a shop and museum and cafe. Honestly, it's fine in the rain. It rains a lot on the coast, so we've spent many days fossil hunting in the rain there.

Go to River Cottage Canteen for lunch or dinner one day (it's in Axminster).

If you don't mind a little drive, you could go into Exeter and the world is your oyster. You could also take the train if you'd prefer.

I can't personally recommend any spas nearby, but there will be a few.

Lots of lovely little shops & restaurants in Lyme to browse in while its raining plus the two museums as others have said. Nice independent shops in the nearby towns too eg Sidmouth where there is also a cinema. Otter Nurseries is a large garden centre at Ottery St Mary. The Donkey Sanctuary also has a cafe for when its raining. Axe Vale Wildlife Park again you could dash in the cafe. Seaton Tramway maybe.

Oh and Hawkchurch Resort and Spa nearby :)

megletthesecond · 10/10/2023 12:41

Beer Quarry Caves. Dead interesting and you won't get rained on.

ZittiEBuoni · 10/10/2023 12:41

I recommend afternoon tea at the Alexandra Hotel, with a wonderful view.

MotherofWhippets81 · 10/10/2023 13:15

I'm jumping on this post as I was going to ask the same - we're going at the end of the month. We are going fossil hunting - are there any nice pubs etc that are dog friendly? Will have two whippets with us!

Worldgonecrazy · 10/10/2023 14:30

Most places are dog friendly/ dog accommodating. Dogs are also allowed on beaches (on lead) during winter months.

It's a very long while since I have read or seen the movie, but wasn't "The French Lieutenant's Woman" set in Lyme Regis, a lot of it in the rain? As an Australian tourist visiting UK, I have spent a lot of enjoyable time tracking through places from books I loved.

Sgtmajormummy · 10/10/2023 23:14

Don’t try jumping off the Cobb in the rain…😉

gotomomo · 10/10/2023 23:14

@MotherofWhippets81

Most places allow dogs on leads, can't think of anywhere my ddog hasn't been. Only place he doesn't like is the donkey sanctuary due to hatred (he's petrified which means he barks) of all equines, nobody knows why!

Is that the harbour wall? I’ll try not to!

Go to Axminster and eat all the lovely waffles at the Community Waffle House, it is the BEST

Divebar2021 · 10/10/2023 23:47

There’s a great second hand bookshop at the bottom of the main hill…. Lots of old ephemera / photos/ maps as well as books. The Town bakery is definitely a thumbs up…. I think there’s a brewery that does tours although we didn’t do that. In Axminster we visited the community waffle place referenced above. Delicious and a really nice Community feel. The River Cottage canteen was also in Axminster but was closed when we were there 2 years ago…. Not sure if that was permanent or not. There’s a lovely town along the coast called Beer ( I believe). Very very quaint.

Heatherjayne1972 · 11/10/2023 06:25

The good food cafe is amazing on the high street in Lyme
the fossil museum is worth a look
theres crazy golf - we just put on wet weather gear and crack on
or
the grazing cow cafe and garden centre further up the A35 towards honiton is worth a look
millers farm shop is on the same road

beer caves at beer - it’s cold inside tho
sidmouth tram was fun
charmouth for fossils on the beach
bridport is a nice market town
there’s a model village at branscombe ( I think).

I love it there

reallyworriedjobhunter · 11/10/2023 06:59

There is a fantastic book shop in Lyme. I'd buy a book and spend some time in one of the pubs on the front reading and feeling cosy. The pub on the corner by the Cobb is cosy and does lovely food. Try to get one of the window nooks.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 11/10/2023 07:01

Don't forget to visit the Mary Anning statue!
