Does else’s dog get a Sunday roast?

Our DDogs are thrilled Autumn has come because that means dinner comes a bit late on Sundays. But when it does come, it’s the best dinner of all!
Today their bowls were full of roast venison, carrots, mash, broccoli and gravy. Then a bit of crumble and custard for pudding.
They are now sharing the sofa watching the Strictly dance off and snoring away.
Just to reassure anyone with dogs with sensitive dietary needs, I have two Labradors, there is no food stuff, or indeed non food stuff, they won’t happily guzzle down and digest. And they both work as gundogs, so make me envious with how easily they stay slim.

Any one else have happy dogs full of Sunday dinner this evening?

He would given half the chance...but he does eat whatever my 4 year old gives him so pretty much gets a proper meal every night lol. He's getting a tubby cavalier!

TeaDrinker247 · 08/10/2023 21:44

Our cocker has a whole chicken roasted at the same time as our Sunday roast. He has that with veg every breakfast. Every day is a roast day for him, and so it should be as he is 13yo, blind and deaf.

Yes, my labs have had some beef casserole and mash potatoes.

Yep, my cocker spaniel gets a full roast on a Sunday, along with his normal dinner, we still struggle to keep weight on him!

Wiccan · 08/10/2023 22:03

Absolutely , they have always had a little Sunday roast . They look forward to it. They also have Christmas dinner complete with a doggie cracker .

Comefromaway · 08/10/2023 22:04

Ours loves it but anything other than plain chicken gives him
a bad tummy. Gravy is especially bad.
Also my brothers dog died from kidney failure just after Christmas one year when people were feeding him leftovers.

afaloren · 08/10/2023 22:08

My lab has just enjoyed his Sunday roast of chicken, potatoes, green veg and gravy. He did have his regular dinner as well, this is just extra as a treat.

StrangeVeg · 08/10/2023 22:10

My two are partial to leftover steak and chicken. But they also love it on sea bass with rice and green vegetables nights.

flatpack1 · 08/10/2023 22:12

Of course she has a roast....it's the law don't you know 😆

RiderGirl · 08/10/2023 22:13

When we have a roast our dog goes and stands very quietly, on her best behaviour, in the middle of the kitchen while we eat (she can't see the table from where she stands as our dining area is totally separate) - she basically waits for us to come in and plate up her portion and wouldn't dare to disturb us in case she doesn't get any 😄

FrangipaniBlue · 08/10/2023 22:15

I no swear our dog KNOWS if we've had anything with veg and that there are always leftovers for him.

As soon as we've finished he stands looking up at the counter, never does it with anything else we cook!

ThePoshUns · 08/10/2023 22:18

Yes always do my dog a bit of sun day roast if we are having one. She also likes lasagna and spaghetti Bol

feelingalittlehorse · 08/10/2023 22:31

They get steak on birthdays, and at Christmas but other than that there’s a No Human Food rule here…

Only because otherwise all chaos would be unleashed every time I tried to eat anything, ever.

msmatcha · 08/10/2023 22:36

We used to do this, plated up lovely dinners of roast left overs. But the vet told us to stop, along with the scrambled egg breakfasts (we have chickens) due to recurrent ear infections. Ears are now better but her expectant face every Sunday is unbearable!

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 08/10/2023 22:40

I've been for a Toby Carvery, ddog had a doggy bag 😁

Wtf why do you call your dog a piece of shit and an 'it'?!?

elm26 · 08/10/2023 23:40

Our DDog (cocker) gets some meat, potato, veg and a tiny bit of gravy on a Sunday.

On his birthday, he has a steak and if we have any leftovers from dinner that is suitable for him to eat for example I cut fatty bits off of meat, I put it in his bowl for him.

(He also loves a prawn cracker but I won't tell the vet that he has a couple a year 😂)

Mydogisamentalist · 09/10/2023 00:22

Awww this thread is lovely ☺️

I type while wrestling my duvet for the fifth time tonight of ddog. She seems most put out that she cannot have all the bed and all the blanket. We have this same fight every night! She’ll only be happy when I’m sleeping on the floor in her bed!

Mydogisamentalist · 09/10/2023 00:25

But yes ddog gets a roast if I’m cooking one. I’ve also been known to share a steak with her… not that I get much choice. I can’t say no to those big sad eyes!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/10/2023 08:28

Ours used to get a bit of meat and gravy, but what she loved best was licking out the roasting tin that I’d made the gravy in - she’d hold it down with one paw and keep going until barely a molecule remained. Better than a Brillo pad!

This was before it went in the dishwasher, in case anyone’s having a pink fit.

A friend of mine with five Newfoundlands, used to go shopping late on Christmas Eve for vastly reduced turkeys. She’d freeze them but later roast them - for the dogs.🐶

Bandolina · 09/10/2023 08:50

My dog doesn't beg at the table because we were careful never to encourage that so he goes to lie on his bed whilst we are eating

Unfortunately we did inadvertently train him that clearing the table equals left overs so as soon as anyone gets up with plates in hand he bounds enthusiastically to the kitchen to await his prize. Huge disappointment if it's not dog friendly. He'd have a go at anything but he loves a roast or anything with minced meat. He loves to lick the roasting tin more than anything (and yes it does go in the dishwasher after)

If you leave the plates and don't clear up straight away he starts whining and barking Blush. So much for my smugness about not begging at the table. It does mean the kitchen always gets cleaned after dinner and never any dirty plates left in the sink. He's the washing up police. My nana would approve.

bellalou1234 · 09/10/2023 08:55

I sometimes make a roast just for the dogs. Obviously the humans get some too

PlantPlug · 09/10/2023 08:56

My dog knows when roast potatoes are in the oven and will obnoxiously sit in sight so we don't forget to give her some! She'll also lie on the sofa in an uncomfortable position so she won't accidently fall asleep and miss out.
If we're cooking a full roast she'll have chicken, cauliflower cheese, yorkshire, roasties, carrot, broccoli (tiny amounts of each)
