How much do your breasts weigh?

fattytum · 08/10/2023 10:34

serious question, I have had a double mastectomy and am trying factor in loss of breasts in calculation of BMI, and what weight I should be now not to be classed as obese, and what weight I should be aiming for to be a healthy BMI.

According to the information I have found online, they were only about a pound each - surely they were more than that? If they really only weighed that little, I am closer to a being merely "overweight" rather than "obese" - but I feel sure that must be wrong.

Any insights or knowledge? Or anyone else about 38 D who could pop one on a kitchen scale for me please???

Thank you!

I’m no Carol Vorderman, but I’m really not sure you’ll get an accurate figure this way, even if anyone is willing to get their kitchen scales out.

Shadyboots23 · 08/10/2023 10:43

I'm a 34K and they're about a kg each

CovidCrow · 08/10/2023 10:44

Ok it’s really difficult to do without leaning your body on it as well. But mine says 1 lb 7 oz (38D).

Whose turn next? 😆😂🤣

Thank you so much for your help! I appreciate this is a slightly odd request.....

I’ve had a double mastectomy. If you have your surgery report, it might say the weight or volume of breast material they have removed.

RampantIvy · 08/10/2023 10:48

Mine are too small to weigh, so I don't know.

I dont have that, unfoundedly - I have looked for it in all my stacks of paperwork

I’d have to look it up. But I was really small breasted - 32A - so not helpful in your case. But it definitely said either volume or weight, because I remember seeing it. Could you ask your breast care nurse to look it up for you?

CharlotteBog · 08/10/2023 10:52

I think mine are about 2g each. I am small of nork!

I'll try that, thankyou

Sorry I'm the wrong size to weigh my breasts, just here to suggest you use waist-hip ratio as an alternative to BMI to determine your risk category. There's evidence it's a better predictor of health problems anyway, and obviously manages to circumvent the whole breast weight issue.

Thank you so much for finding this.

OP posts:
fattytum · 08/10/2023 10:57

That makes it just over 3 and a quarter pounds @Bubbles254

I think I am just going to weigh myself, and add 4 pounds to my weight before putting it into the BMI calculator. That should cover it I think - maybe a bit too much, but better overcalculate my equivalent weight rather than under calculate it.

Funnily enough, it felt like more, carrying them around all these years!

I think it’s well documented op that BMI is a much more accurate measurement for men than it is for women!

BadBadDecisions · 08/10/2023 11:07

Wow, I'm also a 38D and am surprised, it certainly feels like more to carry around than that!

InterFactual · 08/10/2023 11:07

Perhaps you could measure your body fat percentage rather than your weight? I think there are scales with sensors in to measure that although I'm not sure how accurate they are. I've also seen personal trainers use a measuring device to gauge how much flesh they can pinch from your waist.

Your calculation is wrong. 771g is about 1 lb 11 oz, not over 3 lb.

RampantIvy · 08/10/2023 11:11

I'm not sure how accurate that site is @Bubbles254
It is probably using incorrect bra sizing. I wear a 32D bra, but I am not curvy at all and don't believe the weights on that site.

Most people have two breasts.

EveryBlinkingDay · 08/10/2023 11:12

I asked my breast surgeon this exact question after my double mastectomy. I was a B cup and he said 200g each.

Gummybear75 · 08/10/2023 11:33

I'm a lot bigger then a D cup but I have tried this 🤣
Its not very accurate though unfortunately!

I'd focus more on other health measures, as BMI should only really be used in partnership with these:

Waist to hip ratio
Waist to height ratio (less than half your height)
Basal metabolic rate (for finding your ideal calorie intake)
Blood pressure
Resting heart rate
Lung capacity
Muscle mass - weights for bone strength.
Gut health - regular, and high fibre diet.

Chances are if you work on all of those things, your BMI will either be irrelevant, or good.

I've always had to factor massive tits into weight, but more in a "BMI doesn't work perfectly" way than trying to put a precise figure on it. The above have a much, MUCH bigger effect.on your personal health than a figure used to calculate weight in populations.
