Are there any other Halloween lovers out there?

I absolutely love Halloween and all things spooky, love finding/making costumes, decorating the house, all of it!

I’ve just had a really fun morning ‘spooking’ up my hallway after popping to ‘the big’ Asda and finding myself wandering the TWO WHOLE Halloween aisles. I was pretty chuffed as I’ve been barely seeing any Halloween stuff in the shops lately, it all seems to be straight in with the Christmas decorations.

I’m also planning on going all out on the front door decor this year - we get masses of trick or treaters so hopefully they will enjoy it!

Also planning some Halloween crafts with my toddler, perhaps a felt garland or two!

Any other Halloween lovers want to share any ideas for things to do, decorations etc!?

I love Halloween, I always decorate and make group costumes for the kids and their friends. I like how much bigger Halloween is getting, so many more products around and shops to visit.

I love Hallowe'en! My dc are 16 and 19 now and don't really care anymore - it's the only part of their growing up I've found difficult to come to terms with! I'm considering decorating the garden for my own amusement this year.

I like to buy small colourful pumpkins and fill a bowl with them on display in my kitchen. I eat shit-tonnes of pumpkin. Pumpkin gnocci, pumpkin and sage fettuccine, pumpkin and spinach lasagne. I live in a very kiddy friendly area and there’s lots of Halloween events close by that we will be making the most of.

I hate it and dread it every year!

Cotswoldbee · 07/10/2023 15:09

Yes, we love Halloween and do decorations, scene setters, pumpkin carving, T&T etc but nothing happens until 31st.

Then again, we don't put the Christmas decorations out until the first weekend of double figures in December. 😉

britespark1 · 07/10/2023 15:11

I absolutely love it! I’m a crocheter and have made lots of pumpkins for the house as well ghost and pumpkin bunting 🎃👻

ooh checking in!

One of my Dcs loves Halloween. He says that Christmas is too stressy.

I am sadly away for it but have started decorating the dinner table with Halloween decorations (large black felt spiders etc) and each day I put a halloween chocolate lollipop on the bread and butter plate.

Halloween has always been BIG here (Ireland).

I think I'm right in saying we are the only place in the world where schools are off for Halloween. I went to primary school in the eighties, and the whole week was spent carving turnips, drawing spooky things, then at home we got our false faces (often bought in Easons) to go round the houses, toffee apples, sticks for the bonfire, fireworks, and then got 31st Oct and 1st Nov off school.

We never did Guy fawkes night (only time I knew it was guy fawkes night was watching an episode of EastEnders and Max said "penny for the Guy", a term I had never previously come across).

Prinnny · 07/10/2023 15:14

I love it! Got my box of Halloween decorations out on the 1st of October, DD4 is equally into it we love spooky season 🎃

DeeCee77 · 07/10/2023 15:15

Oh...and the one thing I'm envious of kids now that I never got to do at Halloween was carve pumpkins.

Turnips are tough to carve, plus they don't look as cool.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 07/10/2023 15:17

I like an autumnal vibe, and enjoy looking at autumnally-decorated houses (although I cba to do it myself!). I'm not into Halloween though (even though it's my birthday!). Not a fan of spooky stuff in general and dislike all the bright orange and black, and the Halloween tat.

Noooo! Turnips are cool, way more disturbing than a pumpkin.

Head to your nearest TK Maxx or the website, they've just put their Halloween stuff on clearance and they have some really nice stuff. I'm currently wondering if I can get away with calling this petted a beanbag/floor cushion for my daughter

I'm in Ireland, love it, particularly the old-fashioned Irish version with turnip lanterns, barm brack, apples, nuts, colcannon. . . .

Best Bank Holiday of the year (last Monday in October) - often nice enough for walks in the beautiful gold-leafed woods, a last chance to be properly outdoors before the dark closes in, defining the start of winter. Most people seem to enjoy it and there's a general cheerful atmosphere without any huge pressure to spend money.

Particularly looking forward to it this year because I have been (and will be afterwards) being quite low carb, but a little break with colcannon and apples and a (wheat-free, but I can eat spelt) brack will be a massive treat. All the better if I can get a few proper country walks in and limit the damage.

I must see it I can find the folded paper ghost and bat decorations, and work out where I put those spider earrings . . .

Does anyone carve turnips anymore?

They get quite smelly after a while...plus carving the eyes and nose can be tricky.

Never did get to do a pumpkin as its a much more recent thing than my time in the eighties but they do look much easier to carve. And the orange colour just looks fantastic.

RampantIvy · 07/10/2023 16:35

I'm ambivalent about it. I neither love it nor hate it. DD (23) adores it and has always done something for Halloween. Our house is tucked away so we rarely get any trick or treaters but I buy some sweets for me just in case.

ProfYaffle · 07/10/2023 16:44

I love the smell of turnip and candle wax, takes me right back to childhood. I even bought myself a Dremel tool type thing to make the carving easier. I think they look way spookier in a folk horror type of way. I still do pumpkins for a splash of colour and a bigger presence though.

DaisyWaldron · 07/10/2023 16:50

I love a good old-fashioned Halloween, although I appreciate pumpkins when it comes to carving time. We did do a turnip lantern as well as the pumpkins last year, and it was a lot spookier, and the smell made me so nostalgic.

I have Halloween nail wraps that I'm really looking forward to wearing this year.

Onesailwait · 07/10/2023 16:55

Love,.Love, love Halloween. We have a long weekend for Thanksgiving and we will be using it to decorate the house & yard. We have a new addition this year. A 12ft Skeleton 🎃🎃

RampantIvy · 07/10/2023 17:56

Isn't Thanksgiving in November?

Skethylita · 07/10/2023 18:26

Hallowe'en is the equivalent of NYE to me, so yes, it's a big one in this house.

We go all out on decorations and food, but also reflection and making new plans.

Onesailwait · 07/10/2023 19:01

@RampantIvy - In the US it is. I'm I'm Canada ours is Monday 8th

Onesailwait · 07/10/2023 19:01

Sorry monday 9th

Girasoli · 07/10/2023 19:56

I like the whole season...fruit foreging ...harvest...Halloween (love anything to do with magic and witches) then all saints/all souls (though only really do something if I am in Italy)

Girasoli · 07/10/2023 19:58

Foreging? Foraging? The more times I write it the more it doesn't look like a word
