Anyone else’s Car Insurance almost double/triple?

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 06/10/2023 20:04

I’m having palpitations at the cost of my car insurance increase. I’ve had my renewal through which was double what I paid last year. I’m going on the comparison sites and they’re quoting over £900. I paid £380 last year.

I’m 47, had my license for over 28 years, never had an accident, never had points on my license, I’ve had the same car since 2018, no change it address/job etc (everything is the same) and this is the crap they’re quoting me with 🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyone else in this position? I’d like to say they may have given their staff a pay rise due to the cost of living, but I know someone within the industry and it’s still badly paid 😏
I’m stumped.

Car insurance has risen due to inflation, increase in price of raw materials and the shortage of some components, such as semiconductors.
Added to which the amount of claims has increased since COVID.
Garages are passing increased costs onto insurance companies too such as energy costs etc.

Pinkjacket22 · 06/10/2023 21:17

I got a renewal quote of £450 which is about double but went on compare the market and went with someone else for about £250. Was worried as heard it had gone up but it's not doubled (well not for me). I am 46 and had the same small car since 2021 and no accidents etc.

CatNeedsFed · 06/10/2023 21:26

It might be worth getting a quote from a few other insurance companies for comparison. I remember years ago I was quoted an astronomical jump for my renewal and found much better deals elsewhere.

When I went back to my insurance company they apologised but said they wouldn't be matching it. Shame as I'd had good customer service from them over the years but I moved insurers.

Everyone's will have likely gone up but maybe not by as much if you're a new customer.

I’m not loyal as they aren’t to me. I move around to the next deal, but it has to have all the extras I need including NCD protected, courtesy car, Defacto 5 star rating. What a crock of 💩

Yeah ours is up by £30 a month. Yuck.

greengreengrass25 · 06/10/2023 22:10

I dread to think what mine will be

Someone hit me and it was settled with them being responsible but even so.

teraculum29 · 06/10/2023 22:10

Our car insurance risen by £100 comparing to last year, but we changed the car for newer model.
We checked all the comparison sites and this time they all fail. Our renewal was much cheaper than any other on comparison sites.

we are with hastings direct.
So OP check them.

thenightsky · 06/10/2023 22:13

Just had my new price. £140 more than last year. Went on comparison site and found it for just £10 more. Rang company and went through my details and they matched it. Its worth ringing them and updating your details as your car will have depreciated in replacement cost and you and your named drivers will be a year older too.

Bammm · 06/10/2023 22:13

Mine went up from £300ish to nearly £600. I always swap about each year and couldn't believe that was the cheapest I could get. The lowest excess I could get for a reasonable price was £600 total too whereas my excess has always been around £200 in the past.

twobluechickens · 06/10/2023 22:14

I saved £75 on the renewal price by going on the comparison sites, but some were cheaper than others. I have recently bought a new car which has a bigger engine and is much newer than my previous car, so I was expecting the price to go up anyway. I pay monthly which bumps the price up a bit, plus I need business use. Cheapest was £388 for a 2017 1.6L diesel but no legal protection included, £250 voluntary excess. I buy breakdown insurance separately so don't bother with that on a motor quote.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 07/10/2023 06:55

I have had quotes from:
Go Compare
Money supermarket
confused
Churchill
Aviva (I have pension with them so discounted, allegedly)
Uswitch
Swift car cover
Tried multi cover with my home insurance
Ive also gone to a broker. Cheapest was £600 😏
I’ve also checked the value of my car to make sure it’s correct.

Yes, I have 12 years no claims bonus and my quote last year was £283. They wanted £499 this year so I cancelled the policy. I have just found a good deal through the Quido cashback app for £350, so it'll go up by about a tenner a month.

I expect it to go up a bit each year but not double! Hope you find something soon 😊

mrssunshinexxx · 07/10/2023 07:11

Yes! Ours has gone from £1300 to £1700! No bumps or claims it's infuriating and the company we are with are the cheapest when I went on compare the market it was even worse some being almost £3000! It seems so unfair in a long line of things that are of course

Someaddedsugar · 07/10/2023 07:28

Have you spoken to your insurance provider OP? We're not loyal but have been with ours for 2 years as there wasn't anyone cheaper last year. Our renewal was double what we previously paid, and comparison sites were only beating that by £10/20 a year. I rang the company in an attempt to haggle £50 or so off and they've come down to near enough meet last year's price. I think it's £20 more but includes everything

DinosApple · 07/10/2023 07:31

The cheapest time to use comparison websites is something like 21 days before renewal (the advice is on the Martin Lewis website).
We did this, I put a reminder on my calendar, and ended up with a quote that was similar to last year's. We've only got one very old car so it wasn't too bad (we did need breakdown cover too though).

I'm not normally that organised and we were stung before and had to stay with the same insurer.

Augustus40 · 07/10/2023 07:31

Feeling very smug that I sold my car in April.

rookiemere · 07/10/2023 07:32

I am expecting ours to rise astronomically on renewal anyway if DS passes his test, so it's bad news that there's also going to be big rises because of me.
I went on comparethemeerkat yesterday as I have a couple of months before renewal, but the results were not encouraging Confused.
Anyone with Directline ? They were very good when my friends DS totalled their car, so I might get a quote with them.

Yeah annoyingly we don't exactly use two cars - not even mentioning the campervan DH recently decided to buy Blush - but now DS is driving and I need to go up an hour away to look after elderly DPs more frequently, we can't really chance going down to one at this point.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 07/10/2023 07:34

Looked to renew in the advised sweet spot ie about 20 days before.
It's about 80 pounds more

Tiredmummy201 · 07/10/2023 07:39

I had the same, I went through Tescos used Clubcard and ended up paying less than I did last year so definitely try them.

CuntRYMusicStar · 07/10/2023 07:43

Our insurance quoted us about £400 more. I called them and said I wanted to cancel and they suddenly managed to match last years price. Wish they wouldn't do that, it feels like a tax on people who haven't got the capacity to call up and haggle.

lalalalalullaby · 07/10/2023 07:51

Yes!!! Mine has literally doubled, and that was the cheapest when I researched comparison sites. 16 years no claims. Absolutely fuming!

gotomomo · 07/10/2023 08:10

Seems a lot' is went up £40 to £272. Annoying but still affordable

WideLegPant · 07/10/2023 08:18

Have a look at this - op seems like they have already done all the comparisons but worth a read for anyone else. Put 23 days before renewal in your calendar....
