Today my 3 year old seemed like the cleverest child in the world

I know everyone feels like that but today he took the biscuit Grin

He's registered blind (but does have some vision like lots of people who are registered blind), he can't sit unaided, he can't walk and he doesn't talk, he doesn't hold toys and he struggles to hold his head up a lot of the time but today he was shown a new communication aid. We recorded lines of one of his favourite nursery rhymes on to it and every time he press the switch one line was recited back to him. He figured out really quickly how to use the switch and was so, so, SO pleased with himself. All the therapists in the room clapped him when he was done.

He absolutely loves music and songs and I am hoping that his love of music will be the key that unlocks his communication and being able to make choices for himself.

Fantastic

Ivebeentogeorgia · 05/10/2023 21:49

Clever boy! Have you heard of the Amber Trust op? They support blind children with musical skills from early years and into school age and beyond- I would really recommend them.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 05/10/2023 21:57

Thank you everyone, I didn't have anyone to tell today and I am so glad I posted here now.

I haven't heard of the Amber Trust but I am off to Google them, thank you @Ivebeentogeorgia

@Ivebeentogeorgia thank you so much for the recommendation. I thought I was tapped into all the charities for children and young people who are blind or partially sighted but clearly not! I have a 15-year-old who is registered blind.

IamNannyPlum · 05/10/2023 22:09

Well done little one! This has made my day!

BitOutOfPractice · 05/10/2023 22:11

JennyForeigner · 05/10/2023 22:19

This is super cute. Well done lil' Ratfink!

Nothing like the same degree but we have a mostly non-verbal, possibly ASD little girl. She has never seemed to notice the world around her, or to engage with it. Her words are really just counting.

Until the weekend, when from out of nowhere we got an 'ow naoh it regnin' (oh no, it's raining). Happy to have nothing but rain for the rest of my life, just for those words 😍

Ratfinkstinkypink · 05/10/2023 22:26

@JennyForeigner Oh bless her, that's fantastic! Long may our children continue to amaze and astound us.

Awww, that's brilliant news, well done. What a star...I hope it's been a really happy day for you 😍

JennyForeigner · 05/10/2023 22:37

😃All the very best to your amazing son.

saraclara · 05/10/2023 22:45

That's wonderful! I used to teach children like your little one, and simply learning how to use a switch to get a known response is going to open up a whole world of communication, with time.

There's absolutely nothing as important as finding a means of communication for a non-verbal child. Nothing. No wonder the therapists were so excited!

caringcarer · 05/10/2023 23:13

What a clever little boy to learn to do the switch so quickly.
