...what are they allowed to do?

  • Which age certificate films can they watch?
  • Which age computer games can they play?
  • Do you allow swearing?
  • What is bedtime?
  • Do they have screentime limits?
  • Do they have own phone?

I'm curious as I feel I might be stricter than other parents with DS3, who is 10 in February & hoping it won't cause him to feel left out.

Films... 12s if I vet first.
Swearing... no but I'm well aware they do know swear words!
Bedtime... 8.30
Screen time... its only tv really
Phone... no.

She is allowed out with friends (checks in hourly), walks to school alone and pops to the shop alone. Shes 10 now so goes slightly further and stays home alone as well.

Sommerled · 04/10/2023 19:36

Which age certificate films can they watch? 12 if checked by us
Which age computer games can they play? Minecraft and Among Us really, not anything else
Do you allow swearing? No but they wouldn't swear
What is bedtime? 8.00 - 8.30
Do they have screentime limits? Yes but not overly strict
Do they have own phone? No, not til high school

watchingsmurfs · 04/10/2023 19:40

Films- probably up to PG12 but I’d check on commonsense media if unsure

Games - nothing heavier than minecraft, Mario etc. No Fortnite, Roblox.

No swearing, including idiot or shut up
Bedtime - 8ish, lights out by 8:30. Though earlier sometimes if tired. Bit later at weekends though not much. Holidays or special occasions, whenever.

Not a specific time limit in minutes, but definitely restricted. He may do up to an hour or more at weekends on each day but outside of that he is super active and plays tonnes of sports so I don’t mind him
chilling with a game for a while.

No phone.

Aside from all the rules we’re pretty relaxed. 🤣

Films age 12 if I have watched first.
Computer games are Minecraft, Mario, Lego games.
No I don't allow her to swear.
8.30pm bedtime.
Screen limits, yes but we do watch quite a lot of tv compared to mn users Grin
Phone, not yet but I will giving her my old iPhone for Christmas this year.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 04/10/2023 19:42
  • Which age certificate films can they watch? 12 provided I know why it's a 12 etc • Which age computer games can they play? Generally they only play FIFA or Minecraft. I did bow to pressure on Fortnite but he lost interest quite quickly. • Do you allow swearing? No. • What is bedtime? 8.30, later at the weekend, especially if we are watching a movie together or similar. • Do they have screentime limits? Yes, strictly set on an app. • Do they have own phone? No, he will get one for his birthday in year six.
roastytoastysnowballs · 04/10/2023 19:42

• Which age certificate films can they watch? Up to 12A

• Which age computer games can they play? No idea - he plays the likes of Super Mario and Pokémon. Never anything violent or grown up

• Do you allow swearing? Nope

• What is bedtime? 20:30

• Do they have screentime limits? Yes

• Do they have own phone? Definitely not

NotFastButFurious · 04/10/2023 19:42

Well he often cries because he’s scared in PG films so definitely nothing higher!
they don’t have computer consoles apart from a couple of simple games on the iPad
Never heard him swear
by 8:30, sometimes later at weekend
Yes, limited tv time (usually for down time)
hell no, why would he need a phone??

Thesearmsofmine · 04/10/2023 19:45
  • Which age certificate films can they watch? Upto 12A if I think it’s ok
  • Which age computer games can they play? They only really go on minecraft
  • Do you allow swearing? No
  • What is bedtime? 7.30/8
  • Do they have screentime limits? Yes
  • Do they have own phone? No

This is my 10 year old(year 6)

HerRoyalStressHead · 04/10/2023 19:45

My DD will be 10 in December.

She's allowed age 12 films as long as I've vetted first,
Games no age limit as long as I've vetted first, but she tends to stick to Minecraft.
Bedtime is 9pm
1 hour a day on games, no limit to her using her phone (which she only just has) to keep in touch with nan and friends

FiddleFigs · 04/10/2023 19:46

Films - PG12 only if watching with a parent
Computer games - MarioKart and Harry Potter Lego on Switch
Swearing - absolutely not. We’re pretty strict on bad language- not even “stupid/idiot” etc
Bedtime - 8:30 on school nights; 9pm weekends and holidays
Screentime - 30 mins max a day, but we often watch a film together at the weekend
Phone - no, there’s no reason.

HerRoyalStressHead · 04/10/2023 19:46

Oh and swearing is a no

DutchCowgirl · 04/10/2023 19:47

I have a 9 year old. 10 in February.
He has an old phone of ours, but without internet connection. Only to be used as an mp3 player during long drives basically.
Bedtime is 21 on weekdays, 21:30 in weekends.

Screen time : one hour gaming on average, mostly Fortnite with his friends from school.
One hour watching tv series/films together as a family.

Swearing: real swearwords aren’t allowed. But he’s creative, if you let him he can talk about balls and butts all day

Films: he loves epic stories like Lord of the Rings. He’s not easily scared. We always watch movies together, If I think it is an interesting movie then it is alright. 12+ is no problem, 16+ we need to see it first.

suzukili22 · 04/10/2023 19:48

Films - depends what it is and if I’ve seen it first. I’m pretty slack on films.

Computer games- she plays Minecraft, pokemon, Zelda and animal crossing.

Swearing - she’s very anti swearing.

Bedtime - 9:30

Screentime - A few hours in the evening after school

Phone - Yes as she walks home from school alone.

RudsyFarmer · 04/10/2023 19:49

Films... they’re not interested in films
Swearing - no, but their friends will swear and we will occasionally.
Bedtime... 8.30
Screen time... Minecraft and Roblox but not across the week
Phone... no.

BakedTattie · 04/10/2023 19:50

Films, I’d bet first but mostly pg. maybe a 12 if not scary.

swearing, no but she knows them all I think.

games, she plays Fortnite, roblox, but mainly sticks to minecraft and crash bandicoot

bedtime is 9pm

screens are off at 8pm.

she has a phone but mainly so I can track her as it’s a mile walk to and from school

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 04/10/2023 19:51

My DD is now 10, but rules are broadly similar.

Films/TV age 12 generally, but will bend that if I'm ok with it. We're watching taskmaster currently which is recommended for 15 plus but it's just down to the bad language in it.

Age 12 computer games. But loves Roblox etc. she's definitely going to be a horror fan when she grows up and likes the slightly creepier games. Also likes Fortnite, minecraft etc.

do I allow swearing - directly no, but I'm a bit sweary at times and her dad who I'm separated from definitely is. As I mentioned up my post I also watch taskmaster with her (unbleeped) so she knows swear words and occasionally tries to add some in, but I pull her up on them.

bedtime : 8:30 school nights. Pretty mu h anytime on Friday/Saturday. Usually around 9:30 with me. Can be 11ish at her dads.

Screen time limits. iPad is set with age 12 parental controls, she can't download any app without my permission. She can pretty much have it unlimited though.

phone - no, just gone into year 6. Will likely get her one this Xmas. Same age limits will apply.

HangingStars · 04/10/2023 19:52

Which age certificate films can they watch? - 12 if I check them first

Which age computer games can they play?

  • Restrictions on Xbox set to 7+, but I have allowed a few 12+ games if not overly violent.

Do you allow swearing?

  • No, he knows the words as his older brother swears far too much, but he’s pretty responsible and wouldn’t use them himself

What is bedtime?

  • 8.30, but often ends up pushed back to nearer 9

Do they have screentime limits?

  • not really, I do get him to do other stuff, but he is def more addicted to screens than I’d like. He generally gets off when asked though.

Do they have own phone?

  • nope, he’ll get one for his birthday in year 6 I expect.
Moveoverdarlin · 04/10/2023 19:55

Films - PG
Computer games - None, doesn’t own a console
Swearing - No way
Bedtime - 8.30pm
Screen time - No set limits, but not before school, I take it away if he’s been on it over an hour or so, let him have a break then go back on.
Phone - doesn’t own one, can have one when goes to secondary school

sleepyscientist · 04/10/2023 19:57

• Which age certificate films can they watch?
Not a big film person possibly a12a. I've agreed to the new five nights and Freddie's film when it comes out. I always think YouTube is worse than a lot of 15s

• Which age computer games can they play?
We have a Quest and he loves gorilla tag. He's played GTA at a friends with the volume off, he's not allowed it at home.

• Do you allow swearing?
Not allowed but not a major disaster if it slips out. Usually a pulled up he says sorry end of the matter.

• What is bedtime?
9pm on a school night and he wakes up at 7 without an alarm. Weekends/school holidays can be anything from 10pm to 1am in the holidays if we are out

• Do they have screentime limits?
Not really it's more a day by day thing that he puts down when told.

• Do they have own phone?
Yes he has an old iPhone 12 which has seen better days.

DS is 10 this month and in year 5

bonbon2023 · 04/10/2023 19:58

Age 12 films ( I check on IMDb for any rude scenes or violence first)

They don't play games ( girl )

No swearing (shit and piss is fine but I don't see that as cursing)

Bedtime week days 8:30. Weekends I'm flexible they've been known to go bed at midnight if we've been out.

No screen time limits as such, but when I feel like they've been on them too long then I take them off her.

No mobile just iPad.

I'm no way a strict parent I've got 3 adult children that have all turned out great and have all had the same upbringing.

Marblessolveeverything · 04/10/2023 20:01

Films 12, games he plays Minecraft a few racing ones and other family friendly. Bed time 9- 930, he bounces out at 7every morning.

Swearing , he has dropped the odd word in appropriate situ stubbed town etc but always apologies so I develop selective hearing.

No phone. Screen time probably up to an hour a few times a week, all pre approved sites and videos. A lot of how the universe works, David Attenborough and the odd vintage A team.

SadAndHappy · 04/10/2023 20:10

Interesting read! I feel I nay be a little too relaxed with my 2nd dc who turned 9 in August.

Films, he still loves the kiddy films but also loves the spiderman and venom films which I think may be a 15 👀

He is absolutely not allowed to swear (once said shit instead of sit and was equally shocked and scared as well as finding it hilarious!) I really don't like the use of the word idiot, shutup etc, however, having a teenage older brother, it's hard to stop sometimes!

He has no phone but will be getting a secondhand one for xmas.

Screen time, there's not really a limit. But he loves other things too and will sit for hours doing lego, slime, playdoh etc. And generally comes off when asked.

Bedtime is 8. Weekends are pretty chill, we can all be in bed by 9 but tvs etc won't go off for a couple of hours after.

His favourite show at the moment is Greys anatomy 👀 He absolutely loves it and says he is a doctor graduated from grays anatomy 🤣 He really wants to be a doctor because of this show. I know not the most suitable for his age, hpwever it is a hell of a lot better than he could be watching.

Even his almost 15 year old brother wouldn't swear (in the hse or in front of me!) I absolutely know he swears with his friends. Rules are, as long as it isn't being used as an insult, towards a teacher or adult, and he's respectful in public (not in front of children etc) then I don't need to hear about it lol

afterdropshock · 04/10/2023 20:11

Which age certificate films can they watch? 12, no interest in 15s
Which age computer games can they play? Doesn't play them
Do you allow swearing? absolutely not
What is bedtime? upstairs 8pm, lights off 9pm
Do they have screentime limits? no, but only watches tv, no devices
Do they have own phone? No

RandomUsernameHere · 04/10/2023 20:11

I have two 9 years olds.
Films: would allow most 12 certs but not all.
Games: on the switch mainly FIFA then on the iPads have parental controls so we approve anything they download. They don't play Fortnight.
Swearing: would tell them not to but secretly find it funny!
Bedtime: varies but as early as 7:30 on a school night. If early they read in bed.
Screen time: limited but no set time.
Phones: not yet but have own iPads.
