British Snacks Question

Verbena17 · 04/10/2023 16:32

Ok so this is random but it’ll really help me if anybody knows.

Can anyone give me examples of British snacks (chocolate/biscuits/crisps/baked goods with longish dates) that are made in the UK and not sold/sent to Alaska/US?

I know it’s really random but I’m thinking things like Tunnocks tea cakes perhaps. Not things like Walkers because you can buy Leys crisps in the US and same for Cadbury’s etc.
Thanks 😊

I'm in the USA.
There is a lot of shortbread where I live.

Things my dc and dc friends like from UK, Crisps, monster munch, prawn cocktail flavors, Worcestershire sauce flavor. There are only basic crisp flavors here.
Percy Pugs, very popular.
Giant Cadbury buttons.
Flakes. Crunchies and fruit pastilles. Wispas as well.

Brilliant 😊

Guaranteed winners when I travel with work are:
Jelly Babies
Jaffa Cakes
Swizzels sweets, chalky things especially
Shortbread
Seasonal oddities like mince pies, Creme Eggs.

NOT Licorice Allsorts, they seem to be universally hated.

Terry's chocolate orange ?

Minstrels - I used to carry truckloads back to the US with me
Mrs Tilly’s Fudge or Tablet
Cadburys Fudge Fingers
Macaroon Bars

Off point I know, but I really missed Vanish when I lived in the US, a small tub of powder was always welcome.

Thursa · 04/10/2023 17:31

I live in Colorado. In our town we have two British shops and World Market carries British foods, plus you can find odds and ends in the supermarkets.

I’d stick to specific shops, like M&S. Also do not send Kinder Surprise eggs, they’re not allowed in America, only Kinder Joy.

DownNative · 04/10/2023 18:04

I don't think you can get Northern Ireland's Tayto crisps off shelves in US shops. Or Yellow Man.

gotomomo · 04/10/2023 18:10

The majority of British snacks can be bought in trader joes I found. Safeways had some too including hobnobs sometimes

Thebigblueballoon · 04/10/2023 18:13

Jamie Dodgers, Mr Kipling’s cakes, Galaxy chocolate?

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2023 18:14

I could never find flakes when I lived there. Lots of good ice creams but never a 99!Shock

Verbena17 · 04/10/2023 18:16

Mr Kiplings - great idea.
The family aren’t British - they’re Alaskan. So I wanted to send products that they generally wouldn’t be able to buy.
Thanks everyone.

A family I worked with went to UK and came back raving about 99's.
The next family going there I told them about 99's, they also came back delighted with them.
We have lots of fancy flavors of ice cream and many toppings but no flakes.

Not being American I can't be sure. Do they have things like monster munch and the variety of flavours in crisps? What about Jaffa cakes or caramel logs. Tablet, fudge, macaroon bars, toffee?

No to Jaffa cakes, caramel logs and Tablet. Yes to fudge, macaroons and toffee.

As to variety of flavors in crisps, behold Herr's

Find and purchase Herr's products online. Build your own mix of delicious snacks to have shipped directly to your door. Choose from multiple varieties of potato chips, cheese curls, popcorn, tortillas and much more!

I was in Alaska in the summer. Most things, even if they seem the same, look and taste slightly different due to the regulations. Google US vs UK FANTA. If i were making a hamper id do some of these:

Orange Fanta
Yorkshire Tea
Walkers Ready salted crisps
Quavers/ wotsits
Tunnocks tea cakes
Custard Cremes
Fig roll
Cadbury share bags
Percy pigs
Fruit Squash
Blackcurrant Jam
Turkish delight
Strawberry laces

Interestingly when i went to the us i did a thread called "i'm going to the US, what shall I buy?" Its like that in reverse!

CheshireCat1 · 04/10/2023 23:44

Kendal Mint Cake
Milk bottle sweets
Coconut mushrooms
Lemon Puff biscuits
Abernethy biscuits
Grasmere gingerbread

Tarkan · 05/10/2023 00:37

It's over 10 years since I went to Alaska but even for my short break I did miss some British things.

Smarties and Maltesers for sure.

I've had multiple American friends visit me here and honestly prawn cocktail crisps are the things they go for first!

Our Coke is actually nicer than Coke over there. The "full fat" sugar one here is corn syrup there and not the same. But I don't know if that ends up heavier or just harder to send with both weights and what it is. If I was to send a fizzy drink I would send Irn Bru tbh if I had to send a drink.

MaidOfSteel · 05/10/2023 00:48

I know you can buy Lays crisps there, but having just cone back from the US, I saw that the selection of flavours is awful. What about some of the stronger flavours, like pickled onion, worcester sauce etc.

Kote · 05/10/2023 00:50

This thread is making me miss home so much! I'm drooling at all these suggestions, I'd kill for a bag of monster munch right now 😂

A lot of good ideas on here but a couple of things I wouldn't bother with: shortbread (walkers brand is easily available at grocery stores near me), Terry's chocolate orange (available in most places at Christmas), creme eggs (same but at Easter).

I missed prawn crackers for years. and then realised if I went to a chinese/asian supermarket and bought shrimp crackers/chips they were the same.

For the full sugar coke - Mexican coke (made with sugar instead of corn syrup) is available in loads of grocery stores where I am. It comes in glass bottles in the international aisle. I used to buy bottles for my kids at xmas and birthdays.

octoberfarm · 05/10/2023 03:31

Tunnocks tea cakes
Tunnocks wafers
Jaffa cakes
Chocolate fingers
Mini rolls
Iced gems
Party rings
M&S chocolate biscuits
Percy pigs

mathanxiety · 05/10/2023 04:43

Delicje cookies/cakes are very similar to Jaffa cakes. I'm not sure they're available in Alaska as they're a Polish import and Alaska may be a little remote for imported Eastern European food distributors, but they're normally about 88c a packet here.

jellytots18 · 04/10/2023 17:18

Terry's chocolate orange ?

Those are very easy to find at Christmas, don't bother with shortbread, fudge, tea or jam unless it's a British brand like fortnum & Mason. I believe you can buy pork scratchings in the US as "pork rinds" but not sure if it's exactly the same. Also, for people there missing Mars bars what they need is a Three Musketeers bar 😉

Definitely send unusual crisp flavours and twiglets, smarties are a good idea they're like better mnms! Can send Stilton vacuum packed or would that be confiscated at the border? Wenslysdale would be good too.

Ruthietuthie · 05/10/2023 05:21

You are right that you can buy Lay's crisps in the US, but they have such a narrow, disappointing range of flavors in comparison to the UK. Whenever I go home to the UK I buy a ton of crisps - prawn cocktail, roast chicken, the beefy ones... Skips and Monster Munch too. I REALLY miss UK crisp flavors.

Verbena17 · 05/10/2023 14:06

Ok, so I’ve just done my Tesco shop and noticed on the Royal Mail website the parcel needs to be less than 2kg. So I’ve ordered

Walkers Prawn Cocktail
Fry’s Turkish Delight
Custard Creams
After Eight Mints
Stilton cheese - but not going to send in case it makes the entire box smell bad.
Rowntrees fruit pastilles
Fig Rolls
Tunnocks Teacakes

Thanks for al your help.
It’s not so much as a hamper but a range of bits for the kiddos to try alongside some gifts for a baby shower. So that’s cool.

Thanks for all your help.😊

Oh no. Well you’ll just to force the cheese down yourself, I suppose.
