What is the Sainsburys logo about?

Pineapplemonkey · 04/10/2023 12:04

Sainsburys I notice have changed the colours of their logos (see pic)

Anyone know what it means? It's doing a shoddy job of raising awareness of something if it doesn't tell you and Google has not provided an answer either!

Black history month I think

FionnulaTheCooler · 04/10/2023 12:06

Is it for Black History Month? I'm sure I had an email from DD's school about it recently.

peachgreen · 04/10/2023 12:07

Yes it's Black History Month.

Cheeesus · 04/10/2023 12:07

Ah. I wondered too and clicked on it for info, but there was nothing.

Pineapplemonkey · 04/10/2023 12:11

Ah that makes sense, it was niggling me that I didn't know so thanks everyone!

You’re right though OP, it’s a bit of a half thought out plan if it’s not easy to work out why!

Lilithlogic · 04/10/2023 12:33

Strange choice of word there, I think you knew exactly what the logo was about

Niggling is a Scandinavian word. Entirely unrelated.

It looks like Ethiopia, or Rastafarianism.

Special offers on injera and kitfo?

Wtf are you talking about? niggling is a legitimate word I use all the time. I saw something on the Sainsbury’s app when I was making a grocery order, saw the logo, googled black rainbow Sainsburys's and couldn't find anything. A very clear niggle, something unimportant but that you'd quite to know the answer to.
Why is a strange choice of word?

Some posts on this thread remind me of when the mayor of Washington described something as "niggardly" in a speech and had to resign because of the ensuing controversy. All it does is highlight the offended party's ignorance. Like if I, as a South Asian, got offended every time someone referred to a "packet" of something!

That word has no etymological link to any racist term and I think you know that.

GoingToBeLessRubbishAtLife · 04/10/2023 14:28

It’s an extremely common word used everywhere by everyone.

Lilithlogic · 05/10/2023 09:42

You would think that nobody ever has put a play on a word. I fully well know its true meaning. It is still an unusual word in this context. But you all carry on and be po faced explaining etc. Fortunately some of us can think outside the box you're fervently trying to protect.

Lilithlogic · 05/10/2023 09:55

Though 10 out of 10 for using bait that some people will not question

Pineapplemonkey · 05/10/2023 10:08

You know what else is niggling me? Pathetic people who seem to think everyone everyone else has ulterior meanings and motives behind their usual words and that take offence at anything and everything.

My curiosity about a supermarket logo is sated, I am not now left pondering the numbers of absolute weirdos that walk amongst us

Though 10 out of 10 for using bait that sane people will not question

*corrected that for you

QforCucumber · 05/10/2023 10:21

@Lilithlogic

nig·gle
[ˈnɪɡ(ə)l]
VERB

  1. cause slight but persistent annoyance, discomfort, or anxiety:
  2. "Doreen wanted to discuss matters that niggled at her mind"

Just for future reference - it is not at all out of context here, you don't know a reason for something, it sticks in your mind for a while - there's the niggle.

So are you saying that the OP started a thread claiming not to understand the meaning/significance of the logo change, and then used the word "niggling" in order to be openly yet subtly racist? Is that it?

Pineapplemonkey · 05/10/2023 11:03

@RaisinsOfMildAnnoyance sounds even more nuts when you put it like that 😂

I could have been told that the logo change was to raise awareness for oompah loompahs, cats with abnormally short whiskers or even Mumsnet users who have irrational views, I would have used an identical response!
