Anyone else see that huge changes are happening right now and we’re still sleep walking?

its Interesting to me that life is just carrying on while there are huge, seismic shifts occurring globally that will impact us. It’s like the start of the pandemic actually. When I read the paper and Covid had been found in China and I thought, ah China, that’s along way away and within a couple of weeks we were at the beginning of lockdowns and my joke about hoarding pasta became a reality.

We’re about to have a heatwave in October. We now have wildfires as standard in Europe every summer and mass migration of people from continents that are starting to become inhabitable are overrunning areas of Italy and Greece. More and more people will start moving away from devastated land in search of more temperate weather, food, housing and employment.

This isn’t something that will be happening in a decade. It’s happening right now. The places that used to grow our food are going to start conserving the food for their own people. I want to feel positive but I can’t see how times are going to get better from here. I read the news and it feels really, really fucking bleak.

Written from a pile of plastic that was made in China 😀

The ice age ended. Ancient volcanoes erupted. Seas formed. Rivers dried up.

This was all thousands of years ago.
Before nuclear plants.
Before diesel engines.

Before man had any impact on the earth. When we were still inter-gatherer cavemen.

This planet will continue to do it's own thing with or without us.

Don't be brainwashed into thinking humans are the sole cause. The earth is a living thing by itself.

Edited

The planet's climate, temperature and weather conditions and patterns have always fluctuated and evolved, yes.

There is OVERWHELMING evidence, though, that the negative things we're seeing now that threaten human life (extreme weather, erosion of resources, etc.) are a direct result of human activity since the industrial revolution.

Both are true: Earth and its atmosphere has and will always change, AND, humans are destroying the conditions we require to survive on this planet by our activities.

Tlolljs · 04/10/2023 14:32

A nice few days of hot weather in October is St Luke’s little summer happens quite often. Nothing new.

Yalta · 04/10/2023 14:33

Problem with the news is that it is designed to tell you what someone wants you to hear.

All those saying we are sleep walking into this disaster and talking about USA/China/India and their impact on the earth need to look down at what they are typing these posts on and I am pretty sure for most people the device will have been made in one of these countries

If you truly want to do something then don’t add to the problem and make this the last computer/mobile phone etc you buy.

If you want to keep climate change under control then everyone should cut down on what we buy brand new.

And everyone should ask the question, Do I really need this when we are buying anything and everything.

Kaill · 04/10/2023 14:40

So what do you expect us to do? NOT carry on with life? Should we all kill ourselves?

The fact is, we have no choice but to just carry on with life. As individuals we have no power to do anything about the situation. I agree that cars are bad, but when it comes down to it I have to drive to work so I can pay my bills. I agree that plastic packaging is bad, but I need to buy food and it all comes in plastic. I agree that chemicals are bad, but I need to do my laundry and eco friendly detergent costs more than I can afford. What do you expect me to do? I have no choice but to “just carry on”.

JaneJeffer · 04/10/2023 14:51

That's impossible when everything is done online these days. How are we going to pay our bills for instance?

LumiB · 04/10/2023 14:52

Some but not all of those wildfires were started by arsonists. I think there needs to be more balanced reporting about this because its easy to suddenly think omg climate change is causing wildfires.

VegMam · 04/10/2023 14:56

I agree OP, some days I wonder how I’m supposed to sit in an office and do my job acting as if everything is okay. It’s not and the coming problems are entirely preventable.

I honestly believe that the majority of parents who claim they “love their kids more than anything” are lying. As they continue on with their mindless, destructive consumerism with not a care for the consequences these actions will directly have on their children. Pure selfishness. And some people will say they don’t believe their personal consumption matters but they’re just kidding themselves because they’re too lazy and selfish to do anything.

Anyone who says they don’t believe in the problems we’re creating are mostly wilfully ignorant, but perhaps (being generous) some are just plain stupid.

Begsthequestion · 04/10/2023 11:25

With an attitude like that, I can only presume you don't have kids?

Most people here do have kids, or at least give a tiny shit about their fellow humans. So it's not great advice.

I have kids, there is still fuck all I can do about earth quakes.

Go on then, I’ll bite. What are you suggesting is the issue with a 4.0 earthquake in Naples?

If you think volcanic and seismic activity round Naples is either kept secret or is new then you’re going to have your mind blown when you read about Pompeii and Herculaneum.

It isn't Vesuvius that is the concern. There's a supervolcano sitting to the west of Naples - the Phlegraean Fields. It's showing some activity at the moment. If it goes off then we are fucked.

DyslexicPoster · 04/10/2023 15:14

I still can't get over one of the Nolan sisters I think? Poo pooing covid about two months after it hit my radar. Two weeks later we was in lockdown.

People can not grasp somethings until they are in it.

Not my problem mentality.

Plus being faith that everything is within human control. Tipping point is debatable and even if we was being rained with fire lots of people will be saving there's still time.

I don't loose sleep over it. It's just got to play out now, we made our choices. I do think we have had our day ultimately

smooththecat · 04/10/2023 15:18

We’ve got full-on conspiracy theorists now emerging in our main political parties. Has anyone seen what’s been going down at the Tory party conference? Mark Harper, a fucking Secretary of State no less, has swallowed the arse end of the whole 15 minute city thing, thinks it’s about control, obviously been in the DM comments too much. Liz Truss is on a victory tour following her great successes last year and Farage is angling for a path to the top. I’m really fucking worried now, I didn’t think we’d see Trump levels of bonkers over here, but here it is. I think it’s a symptom, rather than a cause, of what OP is on about. The world’s problems seem too complex and everyone wants a simple message - Peterson, tidy your room etc. It’s the opposite of what we need and I’m worried.

PeachesoutinGeorgia · 04/10/2023 15:21

I’m not a climate change denier but it would be interesting to see where we are in the heat/ ice age cycle? I genuinely don’t know, nor do I think I want to be completely honest but I’m sure they wouldn’t tell us

LuluBlakey1 · 04/10/2023 15:22

And the root of all of these behaviours across the world is greed for money by the already super-rich and their exploitation of natural world for wealth ie capitalism.

Still voting Tory anyone? There'll be millions that do. Most comfortably off and upwards people care about nothing but money.

smooththecat · 04/10/2023 15:27

And yeah, there ARE things we can do. It’s not perfect, but we need to elect representatives who have the skill and talent to do what they well do in terms of communication on a global level, and resist the parochialism, isolationism and hyper-individualism that is coming at us. We can work together to get stuff done, we have done it before. It’s never going to be perfect, but it’s what we have.

Yes still would vote tory. And don't ever think or worry about the environment except in terms of hassle it will cause me. Not everyone has to care about the things you care about, many people don't worry about that stuff, they just don't bother to engage about it.

So all those who vote Labour grow their own turnips, knit their own socks and cycle to their weekend off in Skegness?

You’re entitled to you viewpoint, but after the absolute shitshow that has been this government, I don’t understand anyone having the desire to vote for more of the same. They’ve shown their true colours, and you know what they say - when someone shows you who they really are, believe them.

Probably not, but I’ll bet they don’t subscribe to the Tory viewpoint that poverty is the fault of the poor and the weakest must be punished for their weakness.

midgemadgemodge · 04/10/2023 15:35

So let's talk the hassle environment will cause you

Where do you live ? Will it be underwater in a few years time or do you plan to be dead from heat stroke before then ? Or perhaps you will have dementia caused by air pollution so you won't remember this post ? Or perhaps you will be too busy coping with the increased health insurance , home insurance, fresh water costs, food shortages to care anymore . Or perhaps you will be worried about your children conscripted and fighting to keep millions of climate migrants from our shores ? Or perhaps you will be driving drones to kill those migrants before the get near Europe ?

I have never seen anything so short sighted as "it might be hassle now "

ForthegracegoI · 04/10/2023 15:40

And the band played on..,

What else are those of us with children meant to do? I work in a high school, spending time with bright, active, funny, engaged teenagers. What am I meant to say to them? ‘Don’t bother with your studies, ignore what you’re being taught, because it doesn’t matter. AI will remove 80% of the jobs you were expecting to get by the time you get there, and anyway, the climate will have collapsed and we’ll be squabbling over dwindling food supplies.”

nope.

so we carry on trying to equip them as best we can. Ditto for my own kids.

RobynRB · 04/10/2023 15:42

Lovethatforyouhun · 04/10/2023 10:47

And?
If you believe global warming is to blame, do your bit but recognise countries such as China, India etc pollute so much you driving a Tesla, not flying and going vegan isn’t going to do much.

There have always been disasters, just because we have tech, science and arrogance doesn't mean we can control the world anymore than people in Pompeii years ago or the mammoths from the ice age.

Why should the earth stay the same? Humans are a blip in time and will die off eventually by war, climate change or an asteroid. Good riddance I say!

People confuse saving the planet and saving humanity. The world will be just fine when we are gone... in fact better off. I don't see any giraffes affecting the climate, bears stockpiling nuclear weapons or birds polluting oceans.

As for affecting the climate, the best way to do that is population control, but obviously no one wants to hear that.

Absolute hysteria!!!!

This rubbish makes a mockery of any issues, not promote awareness

I live 350ft about sea level, northwest of england ( nice and high and cool ) , if i get dementia im not going to know or care am i!?
NHS is free, regardless I have medical cover with my employment, My water is around £150 a year, although I also have my own spring, Food shortages? crapola.
Fighting or piloting drones to keep my country safe from invaders? Whatever.

Absolute derranged babble!

What's that to do with global warming and super volcanos?

UK is a welfare state, btw, and more people take out than pay in, so I'm not quite sure who is punished and what for.

hedgehogsunflower · 04/10/2023 15:49

I am very worried about climate change. But this thread (with a few notable exceptions) is just completely bonkers.
