Your favourite records from the Glam Rock era. Hopefully some of us on here are old enough to remember.

Sweet - Poppa Joe
Mud - Rocket
Slade - Gudbuy T' Jane. How Does It Feel is great but a little beyond the GR era.
T.Rex - Ride A White Swan. Children of the Revolution also good.

No mention of Gary Glitter songs in order to avoid unpleasantness and controversy. However, The Glitter Band were very talented in their own right.

Suzi Quatro's three early 70s hits were virtually indistinguishable from one another.

Arguably, some early 70s David Bowie, Roxy Music and Wizzard records could be pigeonholed as Glam Rock, though the fans might disagree. Rebel, Rebel and Virginia Plain are my favourites from DB and RM. Wizzard were very full on but samey.

Mike Chapman has stated that writing hits is very difficult. He may have had a point, although he and Nicky Chinn and Martin-Coulter seemed to have had it sussed! Spotting a hit is another thing altogether. When Chinn and Chapman were pitching their wares to producer Mickey Most back in the day, they demonstrated most of their songs to a very patient MM until he stopped them partway through the last song. He disliked the lyrics but recognised the hit potential of the song. Tom Tom Turnaround was a hit for New Worlds. I think Sweet might have recorded it too.

Chinn and Chapman went on to write and produce for Mud, Smokie and Suzi Quatro on MM's RAK Records label. Sweet, however, were signed to RCA and were produced by Phil Wainman, albeit recording mainly Chinn and Chapman songs.

Stop me if you've heard enough.

George Baker Selection would now be in the Schlager category, along with Drafi Deutscher (Mr. Walkie Talkie) and Sylvia Vrethammar of Y Viva Espana infamy.

Fox was fronted by Anoosha Fox, with songs written and produced by Kenny Young. Young fronted the group himself as Yellow Dog a few years later.

I vaguely remember The Goodies singing something called Black Pudding Bertha whilst sporting oversized flat caps.

Forever and Ever by Slik was written by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, whom had supplied the Bay City Rollers with many of their hits. This could explain why the song is virtually indistinguishable from early Rollers songs!

Yes it sounds exactly like BCR but by Slick

I was younger but I still like glam rock and early 70s a lot

HopeSpringsInfernal · 03/10/2023 23:18

Oh I love a bit of nostalgia.

Yes to Ride a White Swan by Trex, but can I also suggest Hot Love

Also, Bowie's cover version of Sorrow, from the Pinups album

The Bump by Kenny. One of several songs that my late parents used to 'dance' to at company dinner dances in the 1970s. Resurrection Shuffle by Ashton, Gardner and Dyke was another.

Kenny, rather like The First Class and other groups fronted by Tony Burrows, essentially existed only in the recording studio. However, Barry Palmer was the vocalist on The Bump, backed by studio musicians. I don't know who sang their subsequent hits. The Bump was yet another song written by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter.

For the record, Tony Burrows provided lead vocals for Edison Lighthouse, White Plains and the 1970 incarnation of Brotherhood of Man, as well as The First Class! It was probably TB fronting The Flowerpot Men on Let's Go To San Francisco too. Same writers and producers anyway!

Oh, I went down a YouTube rabbit hole about all these session musicians. Wasn't Tony Burrows on a totp edition in 3 different acts?

Sonny - Doctor's Orders. She was a session musician and sang on Divided we stand, united we fall.

Alvin Stardust (Shane Fenton) lived at the top of my Nana's Street before he became famous.

TheTecknician · 04/10/2023 10:32

SwedishEdith. Yes he was. Ridiculous, is it not ? I'd like to think he did well financially after being in such demand but I expect he only received one-off session fees.

I never knew that about Sunny. Brotherhood of Man had two distinct phases, the 1970 one and the 1976 - present day one. Tony Hiller, who probably owned the rights to the name, was the common factor. He co-wrote the latter day BOM songs along with vocalists Lee Sheriden and Martin Lee. I believe they are all still together with Sandra and Nicky.

January by Pilot was another song from that era that I still sing to myself - not glam rock but a catch little tune.

Far Far Away - one of Slade’s best. Noddy Holders voice was magnificent.

Does Rod Stewart count as glam? I always had a thing for a gravelly voiced man (See also Smokie ).

More on Sunny. YouTube comments are a wealth of little known facts about 70s artists.

God i bloody love that Slade track Alec, makes me go dreamy every time i hear it!
The Osmonds 'Crazy Horses', gotta be one of the best!

I listen to Johnny Walkers 'sounds of the Seventies' every Sunday, love it, and always surprises me how many fantastic songs there were then.

Thanks for this, listening now and it's excellent

Deathraystare · 10/10/2023 08:39

Oooh! Too many to mention. All the usual suspects! I particularly remember after a hospital appointment getting a burger in a cafe with Mum and Slade came on the radio. Cannot remember if it was Goodbye to Jane or Mama we're all crazy now. Think it was the latter! I was soooo happy!

I was a GG fan and did not play his music for a long time after you know what but I read somewhere he no longer gets royalties. I do occasionally watch Joachim Phoenix as the joker dancing down the stairs to Rock n Roll part 2!

usernother · 10/10/2023 08:52

Rock n Roll part 1 was great. I loved suzi quatro and still do. She's touring soon. So many great pop songs from that era.
