Your favourite records from the Glam Rock era. Hopefully some of us on here are old enough to remember.

Sweet - Poppa Joe
Mud - Rocket
Slade - Gudbuy T' Jane. How Does It Feel is great but a little beyond the GR era.
T.Rex - Ride A White Swan. Children of the Revolution also good.

No mention of Gary Glitter songs in order to avoid unpleasantness and controversy. However, The Glitter Band were very talented in their own right.

Suzi Quatro's three early 70s hits were virtually indistinguishable from one another.

Arguably, some early 70s David Bowie, Roxy Music and Wizzard records could be pigeonholed as Glam Rock, though the fans might disagree. Rebel, Rebel and Virginia Plain are my favourites from DB and RM. Wizzard were very full on but samey.

Noize......get it right 😜

Brefugee · 02/10/2023 20:31

Have not (yet) RTFT but my immediate thoughts are:

Steve Harley: Judy Teen and Sebastian
Slade: Far Far Away
Bowie: Sufragette City, Ziggy Stardust, Diamond Dogs
Elton John: Bennie and the Jets
Mott The Hoople: All the Young Dudes
Roxy Music: Virginia Plain
T-Rex: Ride a White Swan, Children of the Revolution

I think I'm goin to make a playlist :)

TheTecknician · 02/10/2023 20:41

Ride A White Swan was in the top twenty when I was born so it's a bit special to me. Children of the Revolution has a great guitar riff, reminiscent of Led Zeppelin.

I've recently come back from a 70's weekend at Butlins , where all of those songs you've all mentioned were played. It was absolutely fabulous.

totally jealous!

I don't think the Bay City Rollers or Queen were glam though. Queen just Rock, but maybe a touch of glam? Mud were a bit of a sort of nostalgia band, weren'T they

SoIinvictus · 02/10/2023 20:44

Children of the Revolution and Life's a Gas for me.

TheTecknician · 02/10/2023 20:46

Brefugee. I agree but they were about during the dominance of Glam Rock. The Rollers, if anything, were teenyboppers like The Osmonds and David Cassidy. Queen and ABBA carved their own niches.

Coz I Luv You - Slade
All the Young Dudes - Mott the Hoople
Children of the Revolution - T Rex
Queen - We will Rick You & Killer Queen
Don't know if it counts: Radar Love - Golden Earring

slavetothekittens · 02/10/2023 20:48

Oooo, you've just reminded me.

Golden Earring - Candy's Going Bad

SadOrWickedFairy · 02/10/2023 20:49

Forgot Bowie - Ziggy Stardust, Life On Mars, Rebel Rebel and The Gene Genie.

AuntieDolly · 02/10/2023 20:53

I want a hub cap diamond star halo now 😇

Brefugee · 02/10/2023 20:53

ì always think of glam as very niche. I saw Steve Harley recently, and Mr Raffles and Judy Teen still do it for me.

SwedishEdith · 02/10/2023 20:57

Love this thread, need to read it properly for all the details.

So great to be reminded of Rocket.
Rubettes were huge in France - probably the name sounding French. Any YouTube comments are full of rage about Alan Williams. The drummer was cute.

I'm surprised there's not been any TV documentary on Chinnichap music/bands. They wrote so many.

Not sure anyone has mentioned Arrows. They had their own TV series as well and recorded I love rock n roll first/originally (?). Alan Merrill died of Covid pretty early on.

Brefugee · 02/10/2023 21:04

have just had a quick squint through Spotify. BARRY BLUE!

Dancin' on a Saturday Night

Brefugee · 02/10/2023 21:04

oh that is odd - it took my Barry Blue and put that in. Oh well.

CathyorClaire · 02/10/2023 21:05

T-Rex - Get It On

Sweet - Blockbuster

Slade - Cum On Feel The Noize

Bowie - Starman

Mud- Dynamite and Tiger Feet

Sensational Alex Harvey Band- Delilah

Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - Come Up And See Me

Suzi Quatro - Devilgate Drive

Sparks - This Town Ain't Big Enough and No. 1 Song In Heaven

cheapskatemum · 02/10/2023 21:05

Some great memories revived by the songs mentioned on here! I don't think it's a single, but I loved Cosmic Dancer on Marc Bolan's Electric Warrior LP. Also David Bowie The Gene Genie. Roxy Music were glam in the early 70s. I like In Every Dreamhome a Heartache.

LakeTiticaca · 02/10/2023 21:17

Marc Bolan❤& T.Rex: Metal Guru
I can still hear my dad saying "what's that rubbish you're playing" 🤣🤣

rumred · 02/10/2023 21:17

Agree with most of the above. Would add Sailor - Girls girls girls ; Glass of Champagne
Still love them

Clingfilm · 02/10/2023 21:35

Ooh I was going to say Sailor too! I wasn't born then but a big fan, went down a Spotify glam rock wormhole on Saturday, became obsessed with Dandy in the underworld by Trex and Fox Only you can.
I'll add Kenny's The Bump 😁 .

slavetothekittens · 02/10/2023 21:37

Tell Him & New York Groove -Hello

Boston Tea Party -SAHB

rumred · 02/10/2023 21:38

And you've reminded me : Foxx - Single bed. Fabulous.
Solely soley by middle of the road
Ah such a great decade for music

AmadeustheAlpaca · 02/10/2023 22:18

Mike Chapman went on to co-write Simply the Best which Tina covered after Bonnie Tyler sang it first. Bonnie’s version is pretty good.
I saw Mud in concert in 1974, they were great fun, also saw Sparks the same year. I was amazed to find out very recently that Sparks are still recording and one of their more recent songs was played over some of the action in ‘Yellowjackets’.
Love Sugar Baby Love and the OTTness of it. Also Golden Age of Rock and Roll by Mott the Hoople.
Absolutely loved chatting about pop music with my friends at school back then, looking forward to TOTP and recording the charts off the radio on a Sunday evening.
Feel very nostalgic about it all though Britain is a much better place now than it was in the early and mid seventies and despite being old I am a much happier person than I was then.

honkersbonkers38 · 02/10/2023 22:26

This is a lovely thread - I've been happily You-tubing old videos and remembering, like others, TOTP and Sunday evening charts, chatting in school playgrounds about the various bands and how it all was then. It's been a difficult day for me and this has been a happy few hours. Thank you for starting it @TheTecknician .
