Airport security question - any thoughts?

I'm going to Vegas soon. It's a long flight and I wanted to take a cross stitch with me to keep me occupied on the flight.

Does anyone know if I can take a small needle and snips/ small scissors with me on the plane?
Thanks x

Scissors no, I've seen people opt for nail clippers instead. Not sure about needles.

Khvdrt · 02/10/2023 10:09

Very unlikely

Orientalnamechange · 02/10/2023 10:10

You can take small scissors as long as the blade is a certain length

I can't see a needle being an issue

Airports are becoming much easier outside of the militant UK ones (looking at you Bristol)
I've been through Stockholm and JFK recently and didn't even have to take liquids out

Travelled with my sister recently and she had scissors in her hand luggage. They measured them and she was allowed to keep them.

I took cross stitch on a recent flight with no problem. I took thread snips rather than scissors, though small embroidery scissors should be ok.

PuttingDownRoots · 02/10/2023 10:14

I've travelled with child scissors before. Small blades, rounded ends.

Yes you can. Short blade scissors with a rounded tip are fine. I have a pair I keep expressly for this purpose. Check the regs, but I seem to remember total length of scissors needs to be less than 100mm or something similar.

henrysugar12 · 02/10/2023 10:20

I always take a travel sewing kit. It has scissors but the blades are less than 2cm long.

Catch2222 · 02/10/2023 11:22

Brilliant! Thank you so very much. X

You could take the necklace I linked above although I've only used it for sewing thread not embroidery thread but I specifically got it for a flight a few years ago

Sewing needles I had no issues with

Disorganisedmess2023 · 02/10/2023 11:31

Oh my goodness. I always thought this was a huge no no. My flights might now be transformed. I find sewing so relaxing and flights so boring. Thanks OP.

Wolvesart · 02/10/2023 11:32

Child scissors might well be ok.

felisha54 · 02/10/2023 11:33

you can buy them in Boots after security as my dc wanted to do some bracelet making but we didn't want to risk scissors so bought a small pair. Did cost £14 though.

HamstersAreMyLife · 02/10/2023 11:34

I think just have a back up in your bag. At random intervals I've had crochet hooks, baby nail scissors and nail clippers confiscated despite travelling with them frequently on the same airline before. Sometimes it really is down to who is searching you!

This thread is a prime example of why you shouldn't ask MN
The first responses were like 'absolutely no' despite basing that on nothing other than what's in their own head 🤷🏼‍♀️

It doesn't help that airport security isn't clear and consistent and some people have had items confiscated that others haven't had confiscated

Toottooot · 02/10/2023 11:39

You need to be aware of what they will allow at the other end for travelling home. What a UK airport allows a US one may not.

Flossflower · 02/10/2023 11:58

You can take a dental floss container to cut your thread with. My MIL had a friend who sewed on planes and took this

Atticustheaardvark · 02/10/2023 12:01

Yes, I do. I also take a crochet hook with me and put all craft accouterments into one of the plastic airline bags and shove them on the belt. Never been questioned or had anything confiscated! Just take a small pair of snips or scissors that you're not bothered about sacrificing, should you need to.

LeftTheWashingOut · 02/10/2023 14:23

We've had our baby weaning fork confiscated before by a very overly enthusiastic official - who looked very smug as he added it to a pile of other baby forks he'd taken. Only to be given a larger mega fork to eat our dinner with on the plane....

Common sense says you'll be fine, but who knows on the day!

Kissmas · 02/10/2023 14:40

A mega fork 😂

KenAdams · 02/10/2023 14:53

Why do people respond when they have absolutely no idea what they're talking about.

Snips are fine - I just took them to LA and back for my cross stitch.
