Government announces ban on mobile phones in schools

...because it won't cost them anything and there won't be any pushback because the vast majority of schools banned phones years ago.

Perhaps they could also ban kids running in corridors or pushing in the lunch queue.

What a waste of time government this is.

(by 'banning phones' it's generally accepted to mean kids can have them in their bags but they must be turned off or at least on silent and never seen - so any parental cries of 'but they need them for the journey home' are irrelevant.)

Schools should STOP encouraging kids to get said phones in the first place

OurfriendsintheNE · 01/10/2023 23:10

Ban phones in school whilst dismantling all climate change policies. They’ve lost the fucking plot.

SoLongAndThanksForAllTheVaricoseVeins · 01/10/2023 23:11

They are completely toasted, and coming up with anything randomly which might garner a handful of votes from any quarter. There’s clearly no strategy or vision anywhere in government now. This insipid collection of political vagabonds, chancers and dangerous idiots are the very last of the barrel scrapings, and it’s more than time they were gone, for the good of all of us.

It’s like the last days of Rome. Bring on the election, please!

I am in favour of banning phones in schools and frankly think kids should only have a brick phone on school premises hu it isn’t a policy to boast about.

Thriwit · 01/10/2023 23:13

They were banned in my secondary school 20-odd years ago, and have been banned in every school my kids have ever been in.
This is such a stupid non-event. A really useless attempt at trying to demonstrate that they’re doing something about poor behaviour in schools. I guess it costs nothing, whereas funding CAMHS and SEND provisions sufficiently would cost millions now, as would funding schools properly in general.

bombastix · 01/10/2023 23:15

A decent school has this policy anyway!!

Theunamedcat · 01/10/2023 23:17

Ummm our school uses them to play educational games in class because they don't have ipads or anything like that they are also told to Google things on their phones in class they are a tool to be used or abused but surely it's up to the school not the government if they allow them to be used

EnchantedCastle · 01/10/2023 23:23

I wish our schools did ban them, in Scotland! Kids are told to use them in class.

SoLongAndThanksForAllTheVaricoseVeins · 01/10/2023 23:26

Regardless of whether it’s a good idea or not, there’s no way this is a matter for central government to get involved in!

GuardingThedog · 01/10/2023 23:26

One of dcs is at a school with a ban on phones and smartwatches but he needs both as it’s part of his medical equipment it was a battle to get them to agree and then to make sure all staff knew so he didn’t get shouted at using either !

MoiraRosesBaybay · 01/10/2023 23:27

And what difference will the government stating this do? There will always be one child or parent who thinks they are a special case.
Taking stuff from shops without paying is illegal but that doesn’t seem to stop people.

Ponderingwindow · 01/10/2023 23:37

Not in the uk. DD’s secondary school year9 and up took the completely opposite approach. Almost free rein on cell phones except during instruction time. The school says that the students have grown up with phones and know how to handle them.

Integrating phones into the school eliminated many of the problems they were having with phones. Parents are now even encouraged to text students during free periods. If a student needs to make certain requests to the school there are QR codes and/or online forms that they use their phones to trigger. Teachers can also contact students if needed, though I’ve only seen this used for extracurricular activities.

Her school also allows teachers to set their own classroom policies for food and behavior. it’s an amazing thing, the school in general treats the students like people capable of making rational decisions and in return, the students act like rational people. It’s night and day to her previous school where they were quite strict and a subset of children aimed for regular chaos.

Sparklybutold · 01/10/2023 23:41

So they can ban phones but not gender ideology. God they really are spineless twats.

MindIfISlytherin · 01/10/2023 23:43

Having heard about those awful "mugshot" pages on Instagram from the teens attending the youth group I run, surely this can only be a good thing? (Not that I disagree other things like climate change and CAMHS funding issues also need sorting out)

This waste of time government that you refer to ...

Would that happen to be the one which pays your salary and recently also gave you a pay rise ?

parameciumparty · 01/10/2023 23:47

Ha ha they're just coming out with any old drivel now aren't they?! 😂

They must be sitting around some table somewhere doing lines of coke and reading suggestions out of a box 🤪

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 01/10/2023 23:47

Small phone lockers at the entrance would work

We have them where I work as we are forbidden them inside the establishment

Works for us!

And yet that doesn't stop them from being a useless waste of time.

Remember that this is a government that fucked over education during covid and recently had to shut schools down due to not giving enough money so that the cement in the walls could be replaced.

But you do you

The pay rise we had to go on strike for?

I’m not entirely sure what your point is, that I should be grateful that they’ve not stopped paying teachers?

I mean, I’ve got a pretty low opinion of this government but it hadn’t even crossed my mind that they could be that incompetent.

Something new to worry about.

Oh wow what an amazing guy Rishi is

Government announces ban on mobile phones in schools
Passepartoute · 01/10/2023 23:53

What difference will this conceivably make in practice? Is the government by any chance planning to give schools any more funding in order to police this?

Agree with you both.
