Government announces ban on mobile phones in schools

noblegiraffe · 01/10/2023 23:06

...because it won't cost them anything and there won't be any pushback because the vast majority of schools banned phones years ago.

Perhaps they could also ban kids running in corridors or pushing in the lunch queue.

What a waste of time government this is.

(by 'banning phones' it's generally accepted to mean kids can have them in their bags but they must be turned off or at least on silent and never seen - so any parental cries of 'but they need them for the journey home' are irrelevant.)

Well that doesn't work, my ds2 uses his mobile phone as a life saving device without it he'd die and there are thousands of kids who do too.

Perhaps you misunderstood my post, as I certainly didn't make any such claim.

"It" doesn't need an alternative. "It" should indeed pay teachers a salary, but it's rather disrespectful and hypocritical for those who are paid by the government to bemoan it.

Judas springs to mind.

Tell me, have you always been this stupid, or did it take work to get you there?

Of course public servants area allowed a political view. It’s called living in a democracy In fact - and you may wish to sit down - even civil servants are, so long as they maintain the position of party political neutrality during working hours and avoid breaking purdah or giving the impression of partiality in the media. But in private? You’d best believe they have their own views and this shower of elected idiots aren’t popular.

It’s hardly surprising that those who’ve seen the true effects of what we might laughingly refer to as ‘policy’ (I’m not sure much that this government has done in the last few years has been anything other than reactionary drivel but we’ll be polite) might have opinions on the subject. I have also seen the effects of their efforts and I too despise them.

But please do continue to regurgitate your sad little Daily Mail talking points. It’s fascinating to meet someone like you in the wild.

Luckily, even schools which ban mobile phones and smart watches have exemptions for this.

I thought your earlier post was deliberately ironic... But, no....

Wow.

By your logic, if I go into a restaurant or private business, as a paying customer I shoukd be able to say or do anything I want to the staff, with no comeback?

minou123 · 02/10/2023 07:23

MrsHamlet · 02/10/2023 07:02

Oooh pick me....

.... name labels! Do I win a government contract?

Giles? Come on Giles!!!
We need to ban all uniforms that don't have a name label super glued in them.
Write that policy now!

Everyone: Yes and ho.

It's like we have some common sense.

Better idea. Sew them into their clothes like the good old days.

Hard to lose your sweatshirt when it's sewn to your trousers.

So teachers, and other government employees, should agree with everything the government do or say because said government pays their wages?

You do know that a lot of people started teaching under a different government? Should teachers leave after a general election?

YokoOnosBigHat · 02/10/2023 07:29

Huh? What schools were allowing phones? What a non-piece of policy. This fucking government.

I did think of that, but realised we would then have to put a new law that all parents attend sewing classes.
Everyone can use a glue gun, without supervision.

On second thoughts....a government contract for mandatory parental sewing classes. We can call it "Sewing Me, Sewing You"
Hmmm, I'm coming to round to yiur idea.

Those of you who like how your school bans phones, If your child forgets PE kit or lunch or they are asked to last minute notice join an after school sports event: how does any of that information get communicated to you?

If your child is in chemistry or physics & needs a calculator, but didn't bring their math calculator because it's not math lesson day, what does your child use for a calculator?

I am so against this proposed ban.
thank goodness DS is in last yr of high school.

MrsHamlet · 02/10/2023 07:33

The school calls you.
They borrow a calculator.

It's really not hard.

TragicMuse · 02/10/2023 07:33

You can't sell off schools to Academies and then try to exert your will over them!

It's a pointless bit of nonsense to make them look like they're doing something. Which they aren't.

I don't know a single teacher (and I know quite a lot) who think the Tories have done anything useful for education since they've been in power.

Should we all quit? What sort of impact do you think this would have on the education system?

If teachers quit every time there was a change of government it would be massively disruptive to education. Fortunately we care about our students more than that.

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 02/10/2023 07:36

So yet another empty policy aimed squarely at the percentage of the population who will vote conservative no matter what. This one is designed for the blokes down the pub (again) whinging on about how phones should be banned in schools, without any actual knowledge of what actually happens.

It’s desperate stuff really. Tragic for the country.

Anyway, must get on. I have a school meeting about my seriously anxious child, who can’t get near CAMHS and who is struggling to get into school every day. But at least her school is one of the many that has already banned mobiles.

Notonthestairs · 02/10/2023 07:37

Haven't they "banned" this before? I'm sure Williamson announced similar.

AllMyDays · 02/10/2023 07:37

I got an email from school the other day requesting that they BRING IN THEIR PHONES 📱,
They've got a new maths app and want to ensure all the students can access it.
It almost felt like the schools themselves could introduce this rule, or not depending on each situation and really government intervention wasn't actually required Confused

  1. He gets a detention which you are notified of via text/phone/messaging app
  2. He gets school meals and you get a message to top up the lunch account via text/phone/messaging app
  3. You get a message via phone/messaging app
  4. He is lent one and/or gets a behaviour point/detention which you are notified of via text/phone/messaging app

Is this what you've come to in the Conservative party, the party of Disraeli and Churchill, dismissing structural engineers as woke scaremongerers?

Like affordable uniforms.

MrsMariaReynolds · 02/10/2023 07:45

DS was just telling me about a recent PSHE lesson where they were asked by their teacher to use their phones to "research" A-level options 🤔

I mean, they could have used one of the HUNDREDS of tablets and laptops available throughout the school....oh wait... So sorry, I confused the reality of state school amenities with a fever dream.
