How different are your / your partners jobs?

Having recently spent a few days on tour with my music industry partner, I find it really entertaining how different our work lives are (me - finance related).

How similar are your jobs? Do you ever see them at work? Do you understand each others jobs?

Senior academic / drummer in a nightclub when we met. Though these days he teaches music instead so we are moving closer together.

SootspriteSearcher · 30/09/2023 08:38

I work in a nursery and DH works in security. There is overlap, we both have to deal with people who don't want to listen or follow the rules 🤣

Interestingly though my sister does the same job as me, and I know a few other people who have siblings/family members who work in childcare too.

Boohooyouho · 30/09/2023 08:46

Both tube drivers. On different lines and opposite shift to accommodate childcare. Handy that we both understand each others complaints at work but we wouldn’t want to work at the same location. Has saves us a fortune in childcare over the years but some weeks we barely see each other. Hoping to change that as the kids get older

bodypumper · 30/09/2023 08:55

One is an independent social care advocate husband is pest control technician

showd · 30/09/2023 09:05

DH is a software engineer, I'm a musician. Neither of us discuss work much with each other.

trevthecat · 30/09/2023 09:16

Completely different, he is a tradesman and I work in children's social services. We both know about each others jobs, know code words (can't think of the name!), give ideas etc

StiggyZardust · 30/09/2023 09:16

Specialist community nurse and accreditation director of a private university. Quite different.

Polis · 30/09/2023 09:21

Both academics in the same field at the same university. So, yes, we see each other at work and understand each other’s jobs.

Lovegossip · 30/09/2023 09:25

We met at work doing share dealing related roles, he is no longer there and works for a charity organising collections and deliveries of donated and bought items ( usually furniture )

StowOnTheWold · 30/09/2023 09:31

Corporate finance and naturalist.

Enderunicorn · 30/09/2023 09:38

Pretty much exactly the same job and I'd say everywhere I have worked the majority of people in dept who are married are married to someone in same job. We met at work but only started dating when I left. We do talk about work related stuff a lot, not the day to day but general discussion.

EnchantedCastle · 30/09/2023 09:38

Farmer and social worker. Very different in some ways, though both best suited to people who really care which we do.

looking4pup · 30/09/2023 09:41

I don't work. DH Royal Marine. 😂😂

sipsqueak · 30/09/2023 09:47

We work in the same profession and have pretty much the same role in different companies. And we both WFH.

We are very boring at dinner parties 😂

reluctantbrit · 30/09/2023 09:48

Very different. I work in finance and DH is an IT consultant for the music industry.

We have no interest in each other's profession but it works for us.

sleepyscientist · 30/09/2023 09:49

We are both scientist in the same field, works for us.

SherbetLemonn · 30/09/2023 09:50

Not very, in that, they’re almost the same, he just does a lot more hours. We own a business in agriculture, and I’m a SAHM, so he does the vast majority of the physical labour and day to day operation of the business while I do the paperwork, payroll, all that jazz and drive when needed.

Pamcakey · 30/09/2023 10:06

Similar field but very different roles.

I’m a police detective. She programme manages government programmes working against global organised crime. I think it helps as we have very similar core values and she very much understands the pressures and hours that come with my job.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 30/09/2023 10:09

Very different, DH worked in insurance until he retired, I’m a nurse and have always worked in healthcare. He’s always said my work is much harder although never been as well paid. I would agree🤣

RhubarbFairy · 30/09/2023 10:14

Very different.

I'm a SEN teacher, he works in IT.

Flatandhappy · 30/09/2023 10:17

I have always said that I was only able to spend my career working solely in the not for profit sector because DH definitely didn’t! We both have similar levels of academic qualifications but made very different choices.

mushroomushroom · 30/09/2023 10:20

Byeckythump · 30/09/2023 08:16

Both scientists. He earns 10x what I earn. Be careful which science you pick!!

🤣🤣 same here! He's not on x10 mine yet (both still in academia), but it's highly likely he will be someday. This is what I get for going into agri-type research 😂

My DH says this, too. Thinks it's criminal that people tasked with caring for vulnerable people are paid so little, yet he and his colleagues are paid well for playing about with computers.

Like a PP, I am grateful though that his pays well, as it allows me to do the job I love despite the pay.

Oakbeam · 30/09/2023 10:27

Both farmers, working in the same field.
