Upper abdominal right hand side pain 28 weeks 5 days

Hi,

So I've got this constant sharp pain in the upper right hand side of abdomen. Went in for a growth scan today and spoke to the sonographer who didn't seem too concerned and said it's probably just growing pains. But it doesn't feel like the kind of growing pain I've experienced everywhere else. It feels more sharp and localised. Also tender to the touch. It's in the area highlighted in blue.

Anyone experienced this?

TIA

Is it sort of under your rib cage? If so I had the same - it was excruciating at times, but I was told it was a muscle or tendon (can’t remember which, it was 24 years ago). If you’re worried then I would definitely go and see your GP.

user2466 · 29/09/2023 20:11

@SirChenjins kind of. It just feels like it's constantly there. I feel it all the time. When I press around the area with my hand it feels sore too. Been feeling sick but that might be due to my hyperemisis? x

Could it be gallbladder related?

So I had cancer so any pain I get is a worry for me especially in that area where there are so many organs... I had pain in that area and my oncologist told me that it’s often stomach acidity. I was surprised as I would have expected it on the other side, but he told me to take antacid and it went away. That makes sense with you being pregnant. If not it can be gas, which also could make sense.

oneuponedown · 29/09/2023 20:22

I had pain under right rib which was sore and almost felt burning to the touch throughout my first pregnancy, it was really sore and often painful. I had to put hot water bottle and localised heat on it which helped somewhat but it didn't go.

I later found out I had an issue with my kidney not draining properly so could have been that was the pain I was feeling. It's apparently quite common in pregnancy and I was checked afterwards and it's fine now.

Abfab63 · 29/09/2023 20:24

I think I had this. It would almost feel bruised. Was definitely worse in the evening?? I read a few articles that you can break a rib whilst pregnant so I just assumed it was baby pressing against me in a really awkward way. But yes it was probably my worst pregnancy symptom.

BubblePopPop · 29/09/2023 20:26

Have you had your blood pressure checked? Pain on the right side under the rib cage can be a symptom of pre-eclampsia. Also vomiting, swelling, vision problems https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/pre-eclampsia/. Personally I’d call your maternity unit for advice as a sonographer isn’t really trained in maternity medical issues.

nhs.uk

Pre-eclampsia

Pre-eclampsia is a condition that affects some pregnant women, usually during the second half of pregnancy (from around 20 weeks) or soon after their baby is delivered.

Gallstones?

Ikeameatballs · 29/09/2023 20:31

I’d second @BubblePopPop and be concerned about pre-eclampsia. I remember having this the day before I had dd at 32/40 due to pre-eclampsia

I was coming to say this too. This was my first and only symptom of pre eclampsia, and started at 30 weeks. I had my baby at 32 weeks.

If you haven't had a check recently it might be worth ringing your labour ward to check if they think it's a concern.

OutlandInland · 29/09/2023 22:56

Sounds like gallbladder issues. Very common to come on in pregnancy and the pain is on the top right hand side of your stomach.

user2466 · 29/09/2023 23:37

I feel as though whenever I bring it up (have brought it up on three different occasions) no one seems to take me seriously. Without any tests or examining me I've been told twice it's probably just my organs being pushed together from the baby growing and my cardiology consultant said he thinks it's just muscle pain.

I had my BP checked on Monday when I went for my cardiology appointment and he said it was low. I've been proscribed tablets for this.

Am I just overreacting as no one seems to take me seriously? The pain just feels different to other pregnancy related pains...

Epigastric pain can be a sign of pre eclampsia... it was my first sign before BP and protein were raised so I would contact your midwife to rule it out
Also you mentioned cardiology, could it be related to the appointment?
If otherwise ok, it could just be baby kicking your ribs!

Look up rib flare. I bookmarked this historical thread when I was pregnant as one of the descriptions was absolutely spot on.

Puritizer · 30/09/2023 00:00

Came on to say pre-eclampsia. I had severe early onset PE by 20 wks. While I didn’t have pain, I had other symptoms, high bp, intrauterine growth retardation, protein in urine etc. With my second DC, they were over 9lbs and had pain under ribs when I sat down.

dearanon · 30/09/2023 00:06

I had under rib pain when I had pre eclampsia when pregnant with dd

user2466 · 30/09/2023 00:11

I've recently started taking beta blockers (Bisoprolol) for about three weeks due to tachycardia and at first I was wondering is it just a side effect of the medication, hence why I asked the cardiologist when I went for my appointment on Monday. He said a name I can't remember and said it's probably in the muscle and that I could consider anaesthetic injections if it doesn't improve by the time I have my next appointment. However, I don't think he's got it quite right in terms of the location and the type of pain it is ...

Not sure if it's linked but during early pregnancy my ALT levels (liver enzyme) were abnormal (higher) they did drop again to just above normal. Not sure if it's linked to that?

Could it still be preeclampsia even if my BP was low on Monday?

Sorry I know I'm not going to get definitive answers on Mumsnet but I feel like I've not been taken seriously. I did ask to see someone after my scan today but due to strikes the clinics were suspended and they said they couldn't fit me in :/ which makes me feel like I'm being a pain. But I'm just worried as my pregnancy is high risk

OP posts:
uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/09/2023 01:43

The raised liver enzymes could be a flag for pre eclampsia too
Have you had protein in your urine at any time?
If you're on bisoprolol this would lower your BP anyway
Don't panic but do contact your midwife or the number on your notes especially as you're " just not feeling right"
No one will mind you getting checked out

ladypenelopesfan · 30/09/2023 01:46

Another vote for gallbladder issues.

Noopnoop · 30/09/2023 05:35

Another vote for gallbladder issues. I had my gallbladder out when DC was six weeks old. Do you get heartburn as well?

user2466 · 30/09/2023 10:22

@Noopnoop I was getting heartburn and was then prescribed Omeprazole and I've not really had it since then x

How do you get diagnosed with gullbladder issues?x

OP posts:
user2466 · 30/09/2023 10:24

@uncomfortablydumb53 thank you for your response.

I've had slight protein in my urine previously but did a sample around two weeks ago and that was normal.

Do you think they'll say I should see my GP as opposed to contact the MW/triage as it's not directly linked to baby? X

OP posts:
uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/09/2023 10:41

I see what you mean, it could be your health, or a pregnancy issue which is causing you to feel unwell
I actually think to contact both just to be sure you're checked

BubblePopPop · 02/10/2023 20:54

How did you get on @user2466 ?

RoseLavenderBlue · 02/10/2023 21:52

Similar to other pp, I came on to say it could be a sign of pre-eclampsia or HELLP syndrome. My first DS was delivered at 27 weeks by emergency CS due to me having both - this was 12 years ago. Sadly he died aged six weeks due to prematurity and NEC. I had a pain around my ribs, which I can only describe as like someone was pulling a belt tighter around my bra line. Turns out my liver was expanding and pushing against my ribs. I had swollen ankles, high blood pressure and just generally felt unwell. I was pacing around all night, didn’t know what to do with myself. I rang 111 who told me to phone labour ward, which I did and they just told me to take two paracetamol and see how I felt in the morning! I somehow managed to sleep for a bit then rang the Drs in the morning who made me an appointment for the afternoon. Went to Drs who checked my urine and promptly sent me to the hospital for blood tests. They had to take more blood after a while just to double check the results, I was that ill. My DS was born just before midnight, he weighed 1 and a half lbs. I don’t want to alarm you, OP but please get it checked out if you don’t feel right.
