Help me save "movie night" please!

Just me and 2 x dc, 6 and 8. We have movie night Fridays. We take it in turns to choose. Sometimes dc choose games night or something instead. We get snacks, and used to get tucked up on the sofa and watch a film together. It was nice.

Recently though, 1 or the other won't watch the film, they start messing around, it's not relaxing/enjoyable.

Can anyone suggest a really funny family film? Things they've enjoyed

Home alone
100% wolf
Spiderman across the spiderverse
Wallace and grommet wererabbit.
Scooby doo

Gremlins, Goonies, Labyrinth, Never Ending Story, D.A.R.Y.L., Flight of the Navigator, ET, Jurassic Park or Who Killed Roger Rabbit.

Nagado · 29/09/2023 22:08

Ooh, or Star Wars (the originals).

SkaneTos · 29/09/2023 22:11

Shrek, perhaps?

Nagado · 29/09/2023 22:16

Or Willow, Short Circuit, Big or Indiana Jones

SkaneTos · 29/09/2023 22:16

Wendysfriend · 29/09/2023 22:24

Tom and Jerry the movie

Marmaduke the movie

Clifford the big red dog

All on Netflix

Figgygal · 29/09/2023 22:26

Not the amazing Maurice on sky
I'm still hearing about the bloody rat King from my 6 yo after 3 weeks - at least he is happy enough sleeping again

Mine like lord of the rings, the Mulan remake, sea beasts and seal team on netflix, mask of zorro, Mitchell's v the machines is brilliant
On disney plus luca or raya and the last dragon

@Nagado nooo not Gremlins, I watched it recently and it’s really quite violent. Ratings in the 80s were rather lax.

Flushed Away

Do you have movie night rules? When ours started to go a bit off the rails, we made up some rules together including one veto each per year, silence while the film is on etc.

We’ve also had success with the choosing at a younger age (when they don’t necessarily know what might be fun) by making a shortlist of 3 with a parent, then voting after watching the trailers together on Netflix etc.

Also if you ‘theme’ the snacks/food, that can buy a little extra engagement.

The Princess Bride.

Maybe Switch movie night to Saturday or Sunday? They might be tired after school.

cocksstrideintheevening · 29/09/2023 23:30

Are they getting to the stage where they're not interested in the same things? I wouldn't force it it's just painful for everyone.

Poplolly · 29/09/2023 23:36

We used to have pizza and film night every Friday. Ds started to lose interest in films so we switched it to watching the Simpsons instead. Shorter episodes may be the way to go. Simpsons might not be appropriate but shreks puss in boots does a series. I’m sure ice age did some short films. Cars maters’ tall tales is another one. Mr bean was a favourite

Impatientwino · 29/09/2023 23:39

Ours love Beethoven! A touch retro but they laugh their heads off!

Searchingforthelight · 29/09/2023 23:42

Not Gremlins!
Not Big!
recently saw Goosebumps, Dark and Grimm series on Netflix and 7 year old loved them

Coolblur · 29/09/2023 23:44

Not Gremlins, it's a bit much for that age, and it busts the Santa myth, in not a very nice way either.

DS loved Back to the Future, Jurassic movies, Shrek, The Mask, etc

Coolblur · 29/09/2023 23:46

Also second Mitchells vs the machines, we've watched that several times.
DS like the Greatest Showman too

Cool Runnings

Ghostbusters & Hocus Pocus

Yes day

Gillstuck · 30/09/2023 00:08

'Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day' is great. A few moments that might be a bit awkward for a 6 year old, but it is a PG.

The Jumanji series. Home Alone 1 and 2 are good for coming up to Christmas.
