Nobody would think this is racist would they?

DC wants to be an oompa loompa for Halloween. Green hair, white dungarees, orange face. I thought it was a good idea, DH is worried people might come across racist if we change DCs face colour. It won't will it? Since nobody has orange skin? (Other than Donald Trump obviously but I'm not worried about offending him) if it is offensive I guess we could just not do the face paint but I reckon he's worrying about nothing.

As long as they don't get wind of it, I think we'll be OK.
Do they have MN in Loompaland?

As I said, I’m entitled to my opinion.

CurlewKate · 29/09/2023 17:40

The problem is that Dahl himself was undeniably racist and the Oompa Loompas, with different coloured faces and singing as they worked under a white overlord had uncomfortable undercurrents of slavery.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 29/09/2023 17:43

Are there any children with dwarfism at the school? Or with parents who have dwarfism? If so I would definitely avoid this as Oompa Loompa is a slur that is used to mock these people so it might be triggering for them.

That's interesting view

Weird that no one worries about dressing up as witches, murderers, pirates, victims of violence and disfiguration, and similar.

Err yeah. Willy Wonka was SUPPOSED to be terrifying, and complicated. He believes he 'rescued' the oompah loompahs but also paid them in chocolate.
You were supposed to recognise the conflict.
Wonka loves chocolate and sweets but hates kids and people so he invites kids to his factory KNOWING they will fuck up and he will get to punish them.
He was ready to retire and needed to pass the factory on but he decided to satisfy his sadistic needs before he did.
Did so many of you MISS the whole point of the book entirely?

Somethingsnappy · 29/09/2023 17:46

Orange face? Hhmm, it may be offensive to an orangutan I suppose? But you're unlikely to see any, so all will probably be well.

CurlewKate · 29/09/2023 17:47

Also, the Oompa Loompas in the original book were caricature black pigmies. So all in all....

JamSandle · 29/09/2023 17:49

Not at all. Hope he has fun.

InDisguiseitsMayhem · 29/09/2023 17:51

'Calm nobody has orange skin. Your over thinking it.'

I would disagree, the teenage girl we saw in a supermarket last week was definitely orange 😂

Yes because Wonka was supposed to be the baddie who viewed other people as worthless. That's the character Dahl wrote. The clue is in the book.
Everyone else decided Wonka was great and Dahl got the blame

CurlewKate · 29/09/2023 17:55

<shrugs> Just didn't like people being vile about the op's partner when he was actually bringing up a real issue.

Is that what Dahl himself said ? Or has someone "interpreted" him for us ?

I believe Dahl himself rewrote it after it was pointed out.

He was the subject of a recent Purple People ....

Perhaps your DS could go as Donald Trump?

whosaidtha · 29/09/2023 18:16

Hugh grant is playing an Oompa Loompa in the new movie. I'm sure we'd have heard if we were cancelling him for being racist.

ThreeRingCircus · 29/09/2023 16:34

It's topical! Hugh Grant is an Oompa Loompa in the new film, ffs.

The fact Hugh Grant was cast as an Oompa Loompa has caused some controversy tbh from people with dwarfism, I was only reading an article about it the other day that in the previous films they were played by actors with dwarfism and that the role has been taken away from them with the casting of Hugh Grant. I kind of see their point to be honest.

I've only seen a clip but I don't think he's portraying a person with dwarfism. He's tiny. Like 12inches or something

Oliotya · 29/09/2023 18:26

Knowing the origins of the characters, I wouldn't dress my dc as oompa loompas. I probably wouldn't think of anything of someone else dressed as one though, would just assume they were not aware.
Given that you are now aware, it would be logical to just choose another costume.

Eastie77Returns · 29/09/2023 18:31

OP, when people start these “would anyone really think this is racist” threads it’s often a cover for someone who is hoping to start a discussion around how woke society has become, political correctness has gone made, so many people (read: Black people) are quick to take offence, White people are constantly unfairly accused of racism…etc.

The OPs of those threads will also often say they are a person of colour, are married to a POC or have Black friends.

Hence the comment by someone about reading your post in good faith. It does seem somewhat unbelievable that anyone would think that an Orange painted face would be racist.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 29/09/2023 18:32

In the first edition of Charlie (1964), the Oompa-Loompas are black pygmies who Wonka imports from “the deepest and darkest part of the African jungle” and enslaves in his factory.

Mstxxx · 29/09/2023 18:50

I think if it's a bright synthetic orange like an orange face paint you will be fine

If you use an orange shade of foundation or bronzer, it's going to come out orangey dark brown on pale skin and that's when it'll look questionable

Yeah and again. In EVERY edition of the book you are supposed to view Wonka as a psycho, exploitative, rich man who views other people as worthless and is worshipped.
Trouble is people read it and loved Wonka.
It's no wonder Dahl hated people.

You obviously missed out on Pride
