Nobody would think this is racist would they?

DC wants to be an oompa loompa for Halloween. Green hair, white dungarees, orange face. I thought it was a good idea, DH is worried people might come across racist if we change DCs face colour. It won't will it? Since nobody has orange skin? (Other than Donald Trump obviously but I'm not worried about offending him) if it is offensive I guess we could just not do the face paint but I reckon he's worrying about nothing.

My DS went to school dressed as an Oompa Loompa for world book day and all was fine! He even won best dressed🤣

Streamorwatchlive · 29/09/2023 15:45

I wouldn’t. There’s lots of ‘off’ connotations from race to disability that aren’t great

doubleshotcappuccino · 29/09/2023 15:46

Not at all! Goodness me - grew up with daily racism but this isn't it and I'm sad to think we now live in such a hypersensitive world

I believe it may be size-ist
Not sure, but might have read this somewhere

I think it is in quite poor taste actually. (If others on here don’t agree, that’s fine — I’m entitled to my opinion.) And there are SO many other more Halloween-y things he could go as…

whatnot929 · 29/09/2023 15:48

It's topical! Hugh Grant is an Oompa Loompa in the new film, ffs.

Honestly, everything is problematic if you try hard enough. Literally everything.

CharlotteBog · 29/09/2023 15:50

I don't think you risk offending Oompa Loompas what with them not being real and all.

DS2 was all prepared to be an Oompa Loompa for WBD, and then it was announced that they'd be doing their Bike Ability that day. Apparently cycling round the village dressed like an Oompa Loompa wasn't acceptable or safe.

All those hours of sewing wasted fortunately I was able to return to Amazon for a full refund

What do Oompa Loompas have to do with disability?

As long as they don't get wind of it, I think we'll be OK.
Do they have MN in Loompaland?

Loompa

Loompa is a small isolated island in the Hangdoodles near Africa. It is the home of the Oompa Loompas. There is only one known region of Loompa called Loompaland

The Oompa Loompa in Tim Burton's film, with Johnny Depp both fascinates me and terrifies me. They show in the film where they came from 'a magical land?' Not sure.

I could watch the scenes all day. I do believe the actor is calling on me to take acid. I shall not!

Dwarfism rather than racism for me. You only need to put on ITV to see a bunch of orange faces.
But I don't think either would mind if a little kid went out dressed up at Halloween.

Exactly. I wonder what other dumb views he has?

@MariePaperRoses do you prefer the Laurence Fox type of male then? I guess each to their own!

Calm nobody has orange skin. Your over thinking it.

I think you might have just upset some fake tanners with that comment 😬

muckandmerriment · 29/09/2023 16:08

In the original version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Oompa Loompas were described as African Pygmies. Their appearance was changed for the 1971 film and the book was edited to change their appearance after that came out. Maybe that's why your DH thinks it's a bad idea?

Dwarfism is a disability, they were portrayed by dwarves in the film

Consider it rephrased.

The fact Hugh Grant was cast as an Oompa Loompa has caused some controversy tbh from people with dwarfism, I was only reading an article about it the other day that in the previous films they were played by actors with dwarfism and that the role has been taken away from them with the casting of Hugh Grant. I kind of see their point to be honest.

lilmishap · 29/09/2023 16:38

The only issue with oompah loompahs is adults acting as if they are real. They are not.
In twenty years we'll be telling bedtime stories about a nondescript person eating nondescript food in a nondescript house and then going to sleep.
No-one will be offended or interested and sexual abuse, rape, slavery, violence, racism, child abuse and murder will continue in the real world.
But AI will be writing it all anyway. Thank god I only have a few more decades of this shit left to witness.

Fireisland · 29/09/2023 16:25

Yes because they couldn't find any oompah loompahs to play the fictional beings known as oompah loompahs form loompaland because they ARE NOT REAL.
Dwarfism is a disability being an oompah loompah isn't a disability, it's a state of being fictional

lilmishap · 29/09/2023 16:44

How many years until only convicted rapists and murderers can play rapists and murderers in films?
It's going to happen.

Might be Trump-ist though. He is notorious litigious and seems to be spending a lot of time in court.

sallyannie22 · 29/09/2023 16:49

Oompa Loompas are not a race...

So it's ableist to cast people with dwarfism as oompa loompas and also ableist to NOT cast them as oompa loompas?!

Overthinking snowflakes.

It’s so unnecessary to refer to OP’s husband as a snowflake. You really never know who you may offend these days and it’s better that he’s being cautious instead of wanting to offend someone. Obviously in this situation it’s not offensive but it’s better to make sure imo
