Eating too many calories, maybe?

NoWayNarc · 29/09/2023 09:04

I’ve never done fasting, but do you have a calorie deficit spread out across the week? Also 10 days isn’t really that long, I think the first 2 weeks are the hardest before weight loss kicks in particularly if you are doing it slowly (the sensible way), your body will also be moving around water weight which can fluctuate by a couple of lbs I’ve read, if you’re certain you have a calorie deficit then persevere, give it another couple of weeks before reweighing.

It’s proven to be more effective on men than women. I stuck to it for 3 months and lost nothing. Swapped back to slimming world and was losing 2-3lbs a week.

Thanks 🙏 it's possible I'm eating too many Calories in the eating window I guess, even though I'm making sure to eat well and have totally cut out processed food chocolate crisps wine etc

Perhaps my portions are too big, it could be that. I am trying to eat no more than 1600 cals in my eating window but maybe not doing enough exercise as well.

Oh christ are you serious?? Oh god I was really hoping this was gonna work as everyone I know goes on about it and also for the health benefits, reduced inflammations etc

1600 calories is a lot, what height are you? I need to drop to 1,200 cals max a day to lose weight (age 52, a smidge above 5ft3in)

underneaththeash · 29/09/2023 09:35

I think different types of weight loss suit different people.

I apparently do "intermittent fasting" formally known as not eating breakfast! But, I still need to go to the gym a couple of times a week and do my pilates class to stay a small size 10. I also don't really eat sugar, except wine.

erlangshen · 29/09/2023 09:38

Be patient, for me it took me a couple of months to see significant weight drop, but it does work.

cocksstrideintheevening · 29/09/2023 09:43

It's not a magic cure, you still have to be in a deficit to lose weight. Do you track what you are eating?

Janieforever · 29/09/2023 09:45

I think you have misunderstood the premise. Simply reducing your eating hours doesn’t make you loose weight if you eat enough during your eating hours to maintain or gain

if you’ve not lost then in the hours you eat you eat what you need to maintain at this level . You still need to go into a deficit to loose weight.

RudsyFarmer · 29/09/2023 09:48

It’s our age I’m afraid. My advice is join a Facebook menopause fasting group and ask advice. There’s ways to do it that works alongside the hormones which will be preventing the weight loss.

InterFactual · 29/09/2023 09:49

The Zoe study results are crap, overall people felt hungry still and didn't lose much weight. It's not all its cracked up to be.

What do you mean by “reduces inflammations”?

this seems to be the latest “science” in dieting, do x and y, reduce inflammation and lose
weight.

for me IF didn’t work. I was starving by the time it was “eating window” and I can easily manage twice my calorie load in a short time.

psychologically it didn’t work as my brain saw it as I’ve not eaten for x hours, I can eat all the things now as I’ll not manage to eat 2000 cals in my window. I can 😂

nutellacrepe · 29/09/2023 09:54

Intermittent fasting is a bit of a weird one because it doesn't necessarily make you lose weight.

It's meant to be good for your stomach etc (giving it a rest), but it will still only result in weight loss if you eat less food.

If you are just saving up what you would normally eat and eating it in a 6 hour window, there might be benefits for your stomach/ digestive system, but you're not going to lose weight.

lilyfire · 29/09/2023 09:55

I had to reduce my eating window to four hours on most days to really see a loss and even then I do have to be careful what I eat in that time. If I really want to lose I also do somewhere between 24-37 hour fasts - maybe one a week. Gin Stephens podcast Intermittent Fasting Stories is helpful and quite motivating.

WrylyAmused · 29/09/2023 09:55

@Lilifer
Just posted exactly about this on a different thread, linked below.

Sorry, CBA to re-type, but basically, intermittent fasting is about the other health benefits - improved insulin sensitivity etc. It doesn't affect weight loss if you eat too many calories in the eating window.

If you want to lose weight, you need to drop the calories. I'm a fairly small person so if I ever want to lose weight I need to be sustainedly under 1100 calories for a while for it to make a difference.

Work out your BMR - basal metabolic rate. That's the amount of calories you burn just by existing. Then use that to figure out how much you think you need to eat to be in calorie deficit, based on activity levels. If you eat at the calculated level and still don't lose weight after 7-10 days, you've probably over-estimated calorie burn, so play with reducing it a bit, testing it for 7-10 days, and then adjusting it again based on results.

Good luck!

@Lilifer you still get the health benefits but in terms of weight loss it apparently doesn’t make a bit of difference.

I'm 5ft 10 so need a lot of fuel, I could prob manage on 1400 but that would be really hard for me

Thank you that gives me hope.
I guess I'm just worried that if there is no loss at all after 13 days it's unlikely that it's gonna suddenly start to happen later on 😞

Intermittent fasting is just a fancy way of saying you’re skipping breakfast. If you’re only eating for 8 hours but still managing to have three of your usual meals and a few snacks then it won’t work. All diets work if they put you in a calorie deficit. Regardless of whether it’s intermittent fasting, going low carb, paleo, weight watchers, slimming world, Atkins, etc., they only work if you go into a calorie deficit. The aim of all these diets is to help you feel full on fewer calories.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 29/09/2023 10:04

It's far more likely you are not in a calorie deficit than anything else. Exercise isn't going to make any significant difference to weight loss (unless you are a serious athlete), but it's good for your health.
