What day for trick or treating?

I am trying to set up a facepainting business. I love in a communal area with loads of neighbourhood kids, who I've facepainted for free loads of times.

I'd like to offer my services for Halloween, set up my facepaint station outside my home, but this time paid. I just wondered what day all the kids will be going trick or treating? Halloween is on a Tuesday but will the kids be trick or treating on the weekend instead? When should I be offering facepainting? If I see any neighbours I will ask but I wanted to design my leaflets tomorrow so thought I'd ask on here for now, to get an idea.

@tennine It's outside my home but under cover. All the front doors face outward to this communal area. Hard to explain. All the kids play there. I've set up there dozens of times, painting their faces. I did it last Halloween , but only because the local kids were playing and plucked up the courage to knock my door and ask. It's a private communal area.

@Rockschooldropout thank you very much. I might come back to you for advice but at the moment I'm very tired. I have PLI already so all good there and use diamond FX paints, I've never had an issue...so far so good!!

Find out if any local schools are having a Halloween disco.

Captainturbut · 28/09/2023 00:00

@MatthewsMumFromTikTok I'm not sure because I've not done pay per face before. I've always been hired by the hour.

I was thinking a fiver for half face, tenner for full face. Couple of quid for glitter tattoo. Couple of quid for hair clip extensions

£10 for face paint! That’s pretty expensive, the most I’ve seen it for is £8 and I refused to pay it. I usually pay £3 for a small area or £5 for a full face paint.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 28/09/2023 00:16

Nobody is going to pay £10 for facepainting when the kids are already dressed up, out and will be washing it off in a couple of hours for bed.

Captainturbut · 28/09/2023 00:22

Sorry if you missed it but I said in an earlier post I would not be charging full price for Tuesday as it's a school night. Above is what I would charge for the Saturday special facepaint.

I'm pretty exhausted and seem to be experiencing insomnia so apologies if that wasn't clear.

That is far too expensive for something that is going to be washed off an hour or so later. A couple of quid at the most.
You can buy decent face masks for less than that so I wouldn't pay someone that amount to paint their face.

Captainturbut · 28/09/2023 09:16

Someone on my facepainting forum said I should be charging more than a tenner for a detailed full face, she is down as one of the group experts, so I don't know 🤷‍♀️

A pp mentioned halloween parties, that could be lucrative for you if you get the word out. The hosts would pay you a set fee, not per child though. I think it will be difficult to get people to pay for something you have done free in the past, and often at fairs and things face painting is offered free (obviously the artists are paid by the organisers). I am not trying to put you off, but I just think you are more likely to get work at parties and events.

Deadringer · 28/09/2023 09:30

And forgot to say, yes always the 31st as soon as it gets dark for trick or treating.

That's fair enough but not to a target audience of kids who are going knocking on doors for some sweeties!

A couple of my friends who have children aged 6 and under have said they are doing it at the weekend instead of on a school night? I dunno it confused me too

They may well be disappointed, no one I know would be giving out treats on a random Saturday

Comefromaway · 28/09/2023 10:15

They trick or treat on Halloween only but might be going to parties at the weekend.

Hahaha brilliant. 😆 Halloween is on Halloween. That's one way for them to piss off their neighbours I guess

ForgottenPasswordNewAccount · 28/09/2023 10:17

It the 31st October. No other day is acceptable

CurryandSnuggle · 28/09/2023 10:17

Round here people on do it at Halloween itself so the Tuesday. Also it’s half term so don’t need to worry so much about bedtimes

openallday · 28/09/2023 13:37

Halloween is 31 October

Its not a movable event like a full moon

openallday · 28/09/2023 13:38

And it's not half term for us. That's the week before

No parent will pay that when the kid spends the next couple of hours walking round in the dark!

A little 4/5/6 year olds face? £10?

Comefromaway · 28/09/2023 14:08

The average cost of getting your child's face painted at something like a school fayre would be about £3. You could probably charge about £5 for something more complicated.

smallshinybutton · 28/09/2023 14:12

Parties might be at the weekend but no. Trick and treat on the day

Yes and then wash it off in a matter of hours

InTheRainOnATrain · 28/09/2023 14:15

Halloween is on halloween, the 31st of October and I wouldn’t spend anymore than £5 on face painting for a young child to walk around in the dark for max an hour. There may some demand for parties at the weekend but again, max £5. I’m sure what you do is very skilful but there’s a limit on what’s sensible to spend on a 5YO that will definitely smudge it drinking a fruit shoot 10
minutes later.

Kaill · 28/09/2023 14:16

Adults might pay £10 for pre-booked face paint for a big party. Parents won’t. Also be aware that if you’ve painted kids before for free, they (and their parents) might walk up expecting it to be free again, and you might end up with upset kids when the parents find out it’s a tenner and say no.

Not a single parent will pay £10 for a spider wb on the face
