Friends new ish boyfriend has admitted he’s been banned from driving for 3 years. Claims some nonsense about undertaking on a motorway and doing 85mph.

im calling bullshit, however I was wondering what sort of offences it could be as it sounds pretty serious, and a long ban.

any thoughts?

Drink driving, persistent speeding leading to loss of licence.

id speak to your friend to point out a good man wouldn’t lie to her and that nobody loses it for nothing. After that There’s nothing you can do!

bemorebernard · 25/09/2023 20:07

Unfit through drink or drugs , or failing to provide at a police station when arrested for being unfit through drink or drugs

Hellocatshome · 25/09/2023 20:07

Could be one of many things. The incident he istalking of could be the one to tip it over the edge if he has multiple speeding offences or previous bans etc

Or he's gone well over 12 points on his license

PurpleMonkeys · 25/09/2023 20:09

A 3 year ban would male me think dangerous driving resulting in injury to a person or property.

DivingForLove · 25/09/2023 20:11

3 year ban for doing 85mph?!?! Wow that would put and to all traffic jams and parking problems as there would be no one on the roads 😄

I’d be dumping him for lying.

Cowlover89 · 25/09/2023 20:13

Tell your friend to dump him

Antst · 25/09/2023 20:14

Consequences in the UK are pathetic for driving-related offenses, so it would have to be serious. Here's an example:

The minimum disqualification period will be increased to 3 years if within 10 years preceding the commission of the drink driving offence they have been convicted of any of the following offences:

  • causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs
  • driving or attempting to drive whilst unfit
  • driving or attempting to drive with excess alcohol
  • failing to provided a specimen for analysis while driving or attempting to drive
StillWantingADog · 25/09/2023 20:15

Possible it would happen for going at 85mph but only if he had loads of points previously and the last speeding tipped him into ban territory

Muststopeating · 25/09/2023 20:16

Drink driving but second disqualification... first one is normally 12-18 months (this assumes noone was hurt, I don't know how the durations change if there has been an accident/injury).

truthdigger · 25/09/2023 20:18

It's possible he did get banned for doing 85mph but only because he'd done it many times before and exceeded his points.

You don't get banned for doing 85mph one time!

SnapdragonToadflax · 25/09/2023 20:21

I would suspect second disqualification for drink driving, as I know that's three years. Probably many other possibilities though, but nothing that's just one offense unless it was very serious.

legalseagull · 25/09/2023 20:21

Second offence of drunk driving

wildwestpioneer · 25/09/2023 20:23

I call bullshit!

My friend was convicted of careless driving and given 6 points, she already had 9 on her licence, which meant she lost her licence, she got a fine and a 6 month ban.

Someone I work with was caught drink driving and was banned for 1 year, happened a second time a few years later and he was banned for 3 years.

Totting up or even dangerous driving will normally result in 6 to 12 month ban, persistent offences will result in 2/3 year bans. To be banned for 3 years means he either hurt someone or he's persistently offended

SummerDayz63 · 25/09/2023 20:24

I’d also say drink driving but second time
round!

driving at 85mph is 3 points (been there done that when younger)

helpfulperson · 25/09/2023 20:26

Is that not standard for getting 12 points.? So the final 3 could well have been for 85mph but I'd ask what the other 9 were for

DewinDwl · 25/09/2023 20:26

Yes, isn't that what happened to Mike Tindall? Got disqualified for years after his second drink driving offence.

ijustchangedmyname · 25/09/2023 20:28

DB was convicted of drunk driving a few years ago which resulted in a 3 year ban on his first offence. Most likely something similar with this man.

AnonAnonandAriston · 25/09/2023 20:44

It's highly unlikely to be from points being totted up, 3 years is a long ban so something quite serious like drunk driving or drug driving

Doing 85mph 🤣 does he think your friend was born yesterday?

What would you get a 3 year driving ban for?
SocialLite · 25/09/2023 20:45

I would say that it might be dangerous driving under the circumstances you've given. Carries a minimum ban of 1 year.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 25/09/2023 20:58

Thanks all. Kinda what I thought to be honest.

shame she can’t see it

NailsHairNipsHeels · 25/09/2023 21:12

Can. You Google his full name and include court / place he stays in the search eg "John smith court London "should bring something back to tell you

HowDoYouExpectMeToGrowIfYouWontLetMeBlow · 25/09/2023 21:22

I’d say second drink driving offence, I know of 2 people who had a 1 year ban first time, then a 3 year.

BusyBees1234 · 25/09/2023 21:23

I used to know somebody who got banned for a number of years

It was because it was his second serious offence, driving at a ridiculous speed

The first offence was crashing a car and all four people exited the car through the windows

Awful but all survived. He got nine points for that but kept his license after his lawyer gave a sob story that he needed his car for work

He obviously didn't learn as he went on to commit the next offence
