Does anybody actually sleep the full night through?

Every night I wake up multiple times, so I feel knackered every single morning and I don't know much that I can change to stop this from happening.

I'm pregnant at the minute (17 weeks) and I'm waking up for a wee about 5 times during the night. I've decided that I need to reduce my fluid intake significantly at night as a solution to that. But even before I was pregnant I was still waking for apparently no reason.

Do I just need to accept that I'm not ever going to be one of those people that can have a full nights sleep?

If you're pregnant I don't think you should reduce your fluid intake - your body is working really hard to increase the amount of blood you have amongst various other things, and you're producing more waste products which your body needs to get rid of through urine, so you may well wake up needing to wee anyway but you'll be more dehydrated.

I've always been someone who wakes in the night to wee / just because, but I didn't haven't much trouble getting back to sleep until I was pregnant - unfortunately it does play havoc with your sleep and there's not much you can do. Stupid biology.

BerfyTigot · 25/09/2023 12:38

Never sleep through. No idea why 😭

TheChosenTwo · 25/09/2023 12:40

How much are you drinking at night?
I don’t really sleep all the way through and I also only really ever need about 5 hours.
Dh is starting to get up sometimes for a wee!

Very rarely - usually wake at least twice.

PlantDoctor · 25/09/2023 12:42

I always do (except when I was pregnant!). I usually have water before bed, and obviously need the loo when I wake up but doesn't affect me at night. I've always been a very deep sleeper though. I even sleep through DH getting up multiple times a night!

notasillysausage · 25/09/2023 12:42

Not really since having kids, eldest is 10, younger two are 6 and 3 and I would say at least 5 times a week one of the younger two wakes up for something, they seem to tag team it so the 6 year old May wake twice a week with a nightmare and the younger one three of the other nights 😂
I’m just used to feeling constantly tired now!

Ozgirl75 · 25/09/2023 12:43

I only wake up if I need a wee, and that’s only if I have any sort of drink after about 9.30.

Ozgirl75 · 25/09/2023 12:43

If I have a peppermint tea I often wake up about 3 times for the loo, awful!

cptartapp · 25/09/2023 12:45

Never. I wake for the loo even if I've not had a drink for hours. If I've drunk after teatime I can be up more than once.

Jennalong · 25/09/2023 12:46

I had a suggestion for you but reading you are pregnant , then probably not suitable unless you get the ok from a dr/ midwife.
I take half a piriton a night and usually sleep through to 6am ( although sometimes 4am 😥 ) Having just half doesn't make me dozy the next day .

SantaBarbaraMonica · 25/09/2023 12:52

Yeah, lovely full nights sleep 95% of the time. It’s a gift!

SleepyJim · 25/09/2023 12:52

Not since having kids. I wake up a lot in the night, often just to turn over or pull covers up/down etc but it’s still waking up. If I take a piriton as PP suggests I sleep better but still not uninterrupted sleep, I just might wake up fewer times.

INeedNewShoes · 25/09/2023 12:54

You could try drinking a lot more in the mornings OP. I think that can condition your bladder to hold more fluid and you might not need to get up so much in the night. Definitely don't restrict fluids though - you need them!

redmalt · 25/09/2023 13:20

I'm always really thirsty at night. I've always taken a bottle of water with me to bed anyway, but these days I'm usually having a full 500ml bottle a couple of hours before and then bringing another bottle up which I'll have a few sips of before I go to sleep. I highly suspect I have gestational diabetes again, but my GTT isn't until November anyway so won't know until then

If you are worried about diabetes go for a conversation with someone now, even if the test is not yet. It is not something to ignore.

Don't restrict fluids during pregnancy, you need them.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 25/09/2023 14:35

I do envy those who can get a full nights sleep and wake feeling refreshed!
I've been chronically sleep deprived for 30 years
I never need to get up for a wee so it's not that
I've tried everything and at 58, I've given up hope now.
I'm lucky that I'm unable to work so I can nap if needed

uncomfortablydumb53 · 25/09/2023 14:37

Forgot to add
Do see your midwife as you have symptoms of GD
Thirst will be a symptom of this and it's important to manage blood glucose at whatever stage of pregnancy you are.

Beangrove · 25/09/2023 14:42

Never 😭

I have a problem with my neck and shoulders so often wake up uncomfortable / in pain/ to shift about

Also usually wake once for a wee

DH snores and struggles with sleeping himself, is often up at a ridiculous hour and accidentally wakes me

Ddog is a fidget and likes to be up and about at 5am

Literally cannot remember the last time I had any kind of uninterrupted night's sleep. It sucks.

Blackblueandgold · 25/09/2023 14:46

I sleep through the night every night. I drink about 3 litres of water each day but never need to wake up for a wee.

Mummyme87 · 25/09/2023 14:51

I’m 24weeks pregnant so don’t sleep through, wake up regularly. But even pre pregnancy don’t remember sleeping through without waking once

Cheeesus · 25/09/2023 14:52

Could you try and drink more in the early evening?

LubaLuca · 25/09/2023 15:06

I usually do, out like a light and don't stir until about 8.5 hours has passed.

Recently I've had some stressful life events that are causing me to wake in the night (maybe 3 or 4 nights a week) to mull things over and it's a killer. I don't wake for drinks or the toilet though, just real life encroaching on what should be my brain's chance to just enjoy itself. I have realised how awful it must be for people whose sleep is always broken or who struggle with insomnia.

PinkRoses1245 · 25/09/2023 15:07

Always, apart from during pregnancy I woke around 5/6am for toilet.

DontGiveMeThatOldCrap · 25/09/2023 15:08

I'm in my 60s, haven't sleep all night through since I was about 20 (before having my kids). I usually wake twice for a wee now Smile

JollyJellyCat · 25/09/2023 15:09

Yes I was going to suggest gestational diabetes too. As soon as mine was under control I went from 4 get ups a night to 1, and I also felt significantly better overall

You'll have to shout really loud though as they don't seem to like doing the tests these days.
